90% watching Guthrie Govan play the guitar.

I used to go watch Guthrie with his brother with 'The Fellowship' nearly every Thursday at the Bassment in Chelmsford. Must be 10 - 15 years ago now. They played roughly the same set almost every week. On a weekly basis, I was amazed how he would play something completely different, for nearly every tune, across all styles. Sometimes at break neck speed and another time with the feel of someone like Larry Carlton (for example). Sometimes I'd walk out of there ready to stick my gear on ebay at the weekend. The reality was, that he inspired me to go home and practice more! The guy is a British guitar phenomenon, who has left his mark on the guitar playing world. Much respect.

This "Guthrie has no soul" stuff is puzzling. What criteria are you using? Because in this 3-minute clip he's not playing the bluesy bends, a la BB King or Gary Moore? Guthrie is amazing. Most players wish they were half this good.

    • @trDewy

    • @shanedelgado666

Unlike all those guys with "soul" guitar is his soul. People just can't appreciate that he is so much more talented than all of those "gods." I have yet to find a style he isn't just absolutely ridiculous at. And satan would have never had enough talent sitting around to give him all of this, lol. Guthrie is king. Also I wish I knew someone 5% this good......

Worse off, he's said things similar to what people are criticizing him of. He has said in interviews multiple times that he values shredding AND musicality, and if you listen to his songs you can see he's clearly aware of what he's doing.

Your Grandma can play this sort of stuff i.e. there are just so many technically strong young players but other than obvious technical skill most lack real substance as players and never make it big. ''You can't fart in a revolving door and not expect the fart not to hit the next person who walks through the door, likewise for these virtuoso guitarists that are everywhere now put them through a revolving door and you'll realize how the fart analogy holds up, many of them just play sheer flatulence and are doodling on the guitar.'' - Kathy Prejean (Music Magic)

One of the things I really love about him is that when he's playing full songs (either in fusion music or when backing pop/rock players like Steven Wilson or Asia), he's enormously tasteful and emotional in his note choice. Bends, starts and stops of notes - all of the playing tends to be really melodic and only occasionally super fast. It's a different art when playings songs vs. doing a clinic like this. He's a genuine master.

Not a big fan either... he is definitely an excellent guitarist technically, no one can doubt that! He can play everything! But he is not a rock star! Marty Friedman is... Paul Gilbert as well... Malmsteen surely is!!!... and others!

I'm not a guitarist but I've been playing drums for 18 years and this guy is without a doubt one of the best I've ever seen.. His work with Steven Wilson is sublime!! If you don't think he has feel or soul listen to the solo on ancestral and regret #9

Not constrained to a claustrophobic pentatonic tonal universe for one.

Stevie was taken from us in his prime, he was fucking taken from us when he was 27 , SRV showed enough variety for his age SRV was not close to claustrophobic thanks to the way he played in his niche is not even closely touched by Guthrie Who is almost currently DOUBLE the age Stevie Ray Vaughan reached... not to mention SRV grew up in a specific setting in a time where he didn't have access to close to anything Guthrie has at his disposal --- Given the chance SRV would have done much more incredible things than Guthrie, who is a god himself. Have some respect dick wad.

      "Have some respect dick wad"
      Yeah.. you are pretty funny.
Music is all about taste and opinions and everyone is entitled to one. If 12-bar blues is your thing, then listen to SRV all day, man. I don't care. Whatever makes you happy.
I don't get the SRV cult at all. I can take about 10 minutes of his blues before I am utterly bored.. I actually think he has g r e a t tone and phrasing and if he was the lead guitarist in a band that helped him stay off drugs and had the wits to tell him to fucking shut up - not just go on those mindless and endless pentatonic wanks - I might actually put him on some list.
But fact is I have no Idea how anyone can sit down and listen to Texas Flood (the album) from beginning to end without dying of boredom. If other people feel differently (and they certainly do) I am fine with that.
I respect SRV like any other human being.. I think it is perfectly OK not to be as good a guitar player as Guthrie Govan - ability to play guitar does not at all play into how much/little respect I have for people.
SRV died a month short of 36 years old, nine years younger than Govan. Just saying. Anyway.. Merry Christmas!

No, actually. I'm reporting what John Suhr said during an online discussion with Dave Friedman and Pete Thorn on a channel called Tone Talk, when he was asked how it came to be that Guthrie stopped being a Suhr artist. Maybe you're the one with a need for conflict?
