Hi Jerry, I use collage cwm, and oils in my paintings. I tend to stay with lightweight materials and saturate the collage pieces fairly heavily. Using the collage pieces as a final layer after the underlayer is a bit dry for a couple days seems to help ensure that the collage pieces adhere properly. Hope that helps.
Thank you for researching and presenting this, Jerry & Rebecca. Super helpful and clarified a number of questions I had in my studio right now as I am looking to incorporate ‘ink skins’ (acrylic inks on tissue) into my CMW & oil paintings. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I use collage in my cold wax medium paintings. I don't use acrylic medium as an adhesive. I use Linco or Talas as an adhesive. It is a glue that's compatible with oils. I am collaging Arches oil paper which is painted (with oils) into the work, Sometimes the collage pieces are partially painted over, sometimes not. So far so good.
I think quite a bit of confusion is caused by online instructors, including one very popular and influential one, mistakenly referring to pigment sticks as ‘oil pastels’, thought the R&F label can be seen quite clearly sometimes in the accompanying demos.
