Totally unsolicited and possibly presumptuous advice, but if/when you and your wife have children, keep up with your PT and proper lifting techniques!!! I just got my discectomy done (L5 S1) four weeks ago and my herniated disc issue was basically caused by extreme fatigue of being a new parent and improper lifting techniques ("proper" mechanics is SO hard with the design of baby-related stuff!). My child is 8 months old and so it was like 7 looooong months of putting my tired back through the ringer. You seem to be doing awesome and thank you for the videos (so encouraging!!!). Just, in case you find yourself in a season of new parenthood, don't neglect proper bracing and contracting your core when you lift the little creature. :) Here's to fast, healthy, and longterm recovery and investment in our health!

Thank you for sharing your story! I had a similar experience where I had crazy herniations in l3/l4 and l4/l5 at 18 years old. Gave it a few years with the chiro, pt and rest and got some relief. Fast forward 7 years and the pains started again. Trying all the non surgical things but it’s been slowly deteriorating over the following 4 years. So 11 years since the pain started, I’m 29 now and finally thinking about going for the surgery. Your story helps alleviate some of my concerns! It’s been a long road as I know you can relate to! Stay safe and keep up with your physical therapy!

Hey there , greetings from Melbourne 🇦🇺
    I am 34 years old , I’m 6”4 and 120kg ( 15kg over my usual weight )
I had a injury for 8 years prior to surgery on my
    L4-L5 to L1-S5 laminectomy/discectomy .
I am currently 5 weeks out after surgery . I pretty much relax most days , I took it real easy with rest the first 2 weeks and then around week 4 I am now walking daily for about half a hour . I do swimming exercises twice a week and I do some Pilates when I don’t go on my once a day walk . I am active as in going to the shops or just general housework or leisure .
I try not bend and twist as much as possible and I do not lift anything at all . Literally nothing .
My experience so far has been progress literally every day .
My previous pain was both legs , lower back extremely achy and stiff almost all the time , hamstring , stabbing in my quads and calf pain to the point it was sucking in and I could not drive or walk , hips occasionally was also unbearable .
I have 95% pain gone in my legs now , I occasionally have warm sensations or pain sensations in my feet or in my quad just or hip just for a little bit and then it goes away . As long as I walk once a day and do my Pilates or swim as I am now , I will be fine . I basically do minimal exercises and rest a lot and just keep the body moving slightly during the day . I mean I’m 5 weeks out I’m def not going any harder .
One hiccup last week was leaning forward while seated my nerve did pinch for 3 days , then went away like I didn’t even happen with rest . It’s basically the nerve letting you know it’s still swelled around the area and can get upset in these early weeks . I also have stenosis which makes
My condition even worse but you honestly would not know .
My last impressions of today is that my incision site is still swelled and hard full of scar tissue . It is getting better tho but how do I explain , if I’m sitting here and I move my hips around slow and circular it feels like someone is holding my spine tight with their hand and it’s a little heavy .
No pain just still stiff but as I said slowly day by day it gets less and less .
So far I’m so upset I didn’t get this done sooner . Wasted so many years .
What is your thoughts on my current situation and did you have stiffness , set backs ect .
I’m also a baller and I’ll gladly say I’ll never ever compete again . I don’t want to hurt myself

    • @EpicRidecyclist

I have that feeling in my spine as well at 6 months like someone is holding there hand aroudn my spine and my incision is swollen interesting, how are you now.

@@EpicRidecyclist unfortunately my disc prolapsed after 2 surgical procedures namely
Laminectomy/discectomy L4-L5 . I am refusing the fuse as here in Australia they do not seal the hole after surgery like they do in the USA . Also stem cell would be required immediately after this procedure to ensure a quick recovery and a healthy long one too .
I had 2 surgery’s week 6 on both the disc popped back out . Now im permanently disabled . I walk take pain killers , see a physiotherapist and psychiatrist and just try get on with it . I also take injections to block my nerves as some days I can go without meds . My life is a living hell , I can’t work nothing until I go and get this looked at in America and let it heal as much as possible . As for the grabbing around the area , that slowly goes away but not completely . It’s nerve pain down the left leg and my lower back is very very sore most days . Some days I get away with it but I can’t sit on normal chairs , need a good bed and lay flat at least 5-20 times a day .
      So yeh sad period atm

@@idoz777 Hey man, I was feeling like total crap after 3-4 weeks, but now after another 1-2 weeks I've drastically improved. I correlate this purely to my change in mentality. I highly recommend you don't keep track of time, or how many week it has been since your surgery. Just take each day at a time, and convince yourself that you are fixed and will heal. Instead of living life worrying about when you get some of your old pain and then thinking you haven't been fixed try to accept the pain in the sense that you aren't afraid of the pain, it's a part of the process and the less you fear or worry the more the pain will begin to subside. Can't stress enough how your mental state will affect your recovery. I recommend reading John Sarno, Healing Back Pain book if you can get your hands on it. It's helpful to adopt the mentality in this book, even if you do have a real structural issue. Good luck!

What kinds of hoops did the insurance company make you jump through before having the procedure? ImDid they make you have a epidural b/c I know it’s not really a long term solution? How did the conversation go with your surgeon when you had it? (I have sooo many questions). TBH I’m terrified to have the conversation with my surgeon after drugs and PT have not been successful. It’s just sooo disconcerting for me as my herniation seems like a permanent punishment for a mistake I have learned my lesson. It’s just hard to stay positive.

      @davidlindgren7605 4 роки тому

FYI, I got a herniation between L4-L5 in early July 2020. I asked my surgeon, "what's the chance my insurance co. will deny surgery approval without me doing PT and other conservative therapy first?" Zero, was his answer, and he was right. Blue Cross approved and I had surgery Sept. 21st. Apparently he just wrote them a letter explaining why surgery was the best option NOW. Each person's situation is unique. I had developed neurologic deficits (slap gait in right foot) which I'm sure increased my need for surgery, but don't be afraid of insurance companies. They will try to deny as long as they can because they save money, but at some point the indications are there for surgery and they can't ignore that. I strongly believe in surgery instead of futzing around for months and years with "conservative treatment" that too often just doesn't fix the problem. You have no reason to be terrified of conversing with your surgeon. The sooner you get surgery the better your chances are you won't be left with a permanent problem.
