I love that the original game jam entry didn't make the top 20. It's a reminder that the point of a game jam isn't to get a high rank among the other submissions, but rather to produce a compelling seed that can be developed further.

Hey, I was one of the level designers on this game! Currently on holiday in Florence and saw the Patreon email notification while taking a dumb selfie with Satan in the duomo. As soon as we got back down to street level I had to run a couple of streets away from the crowds to get enough signal to watch - all worth it!

_Rollerdrome_ is one of those HYPER rare (for me) games that got my attention with tight gameplay and stiff challenge but also KEPT that attention, for hours of gameplay, day-in-day-out for about a week or so.
for me that's a miracle. I don't put hundreds of hours into games anymore, I get bored really easy, and I don't care about story. I care about fun, challenging gameplay with depth, feel and ramping challenge. and this one did it.
it's one of my favorites. I really really recommend it. and at that price point, I recommend it to everybody who likes action games. anybody. everybody. it's great.

Nice to see. There are a few more ex GMTK jam entries that became full games. Including my own game, Control:Override, that I originally made for GMTK jam 2020! Launching a steam curator page for GMTK game jam entries would be cool and would love to see how other people fleshed out their jam entries.
You know, every year during Ludum Dare I always feel like the theme is shit before grudgingly starting brainstorming. But the themes for GMTK jams never made me feel like that. I hope GMTK jam continues for many years.

The perfect dodge and the way it turns a defensive move into an offensive one reminds me of Middle earth: Shadow of war and it's perfect counter, if you fully upgrade it it becomes a parry that let's you kill hundreds of orcs at once and "dominate" them with relative ease.

Gamer Toolkit video idea: is slow motion in movement shooters a cliche. Points: complexity - can this genre have easy-to-learn, hard-to-master mechanics; no compromise - can you still build a core player base over set complexity (you could talk about fighting games but of course, it isn't necessarily mainstream); game juice - does slow motion take away form a games flow; and is it wort it.

I've been playing this game for a couple weeks and it's so cool coming to this video after my experiance and having the devs explain that my exact experiance with the game was completley planned and intentional. You do go from just barely scraping by and struggleing to survive to figuring out each weapon and enemy type and slowly feelin more and more in control of each encounter. The challenges make you go back to old levels and you get to experiance how much you've improved. And once you figure out the timing for super reflex it does completly change the feel of the game. And yes my eyes do water every time I play from not being able to blink.
Really really fun game. Every design decision feels inspired. I hope the game gets some sort of expansion or sequal at some point but even if it doesn't I'm completely satisfied with what I got out of it.

I like that even with how common genre combining is these days in gaming, new unique combinations are still being made!

I got sick with Covid this last week & have spent a ton of time on the couch with my PS5. I was bored of all my games, scrolling through for something to play, and came across the 30 minute trial for this game.
I told myself "cool, a 30 minute hard timer to tell me when to go to bed"
    I still haven't slept

That art direction is top notch. I don't recall any games nailing the 80's eurocomics style anywhere near as well as this does. Environment art could do with a bit more variety IMO.

What did you think of Sable ? Similar visuals, even heavier on the Moebius influence.

@@Lotsofleaves I haven't played it, but it looks a bit too clean compared to the comics (or my memory of them). The lines in Rollerdrome look a bit thicker and noisier, which I feel helps capture the aesthetic better.

The game design sounds really solid. The super reflex mode is brilliant design and is actually found in many action games too, which adds depth in the combat. Monster hunter implements that masterfully too.

Dude! Mark! There are so many games coming out right now that combine two genres really well. I wonder how many of those developed for inspired by your game jam back then.

Reminds me a bit of Ghostrunner, which also combines movement with action, which after a while (to me) starts to feel more like a real-time puzzle game. I think these 2 games have a lot in common, which is pretty cool because I really like Ghostrunner.

I'm not into game development but it was really interesting to see how they had to 'dumb down' both genres to find a way to successfully combine them, and how the change in game mechanic from trying to survive to becoming dominant, is a powerful rewarding experience psychologically. Also, I really dig the cut-scene animation. Super cool.
