It’s sad really, Ruby Gillman could have been great but unfortunately the marketing was so bad spoiling the entire movie, and I have only seen it once, and it’s a shame considering the amazing movie before Ruby (puss in boots the last wish) and it could have been better 😢
You're right; it's no Kung Fu Panda or Prince of Egypt, but it doesn't have to be. I enjoy Ruby Gillman for what it is, flaws and all, and yes, Ruby was pretty adorable. Hopefully it'll have a better like on Blu-Ray and streaming and become a cult favorite in the vein Treasure Planet, Titan A.E., and Road to El Dorado.
I really like the movie, but there are some things that could have explored like how did Chelsea a.k.a. Narissa survive the Battle, what’s the deal between Ruby’s mother and Her grandma! What’s the villains backstory?

Yeah, they did a lot to make her seem like she cared when no other characters were looking. It seems they were only there to confuse the audience about whether she has good or bad motives, but they already spoiled that in all the marketing, so it kind of defeated the purpose.
nooo i loved the jokes from ruby's depressing friend where they zoomed in! id say actually in the theater i was in they got a few laughs. great video though!
Yeah, I agree. While I was a bit hard on the criticisms, I think it's a cute movie. Not one of Dreamworks' best, but better than most of their mid or lower films, and definitely worth more love than it got.
A lot of people forget Chelsea being a bully to ruby in the trailer part which would have worked better because then it would have given ruby's friends a lot more screen time like they found out that ruby is a kraken, being helpful and supportive they embrace her kraken form, bringing her out of her shell. Also the trailer that spoiled the movie, DreamWorks had nothing to do with it, it was all universals fault, they also didn't give the writers enough time to put everything they want which is the reason why this movie felt rushed and unfinished. Thanks a lot universal! 😡
Probably a 5. Didn't do anything particularly great, but also is a totally fine animated kids movie. My biggest issue with it is probably just that the whole film feels kind of like wasted potential. I think it needed more time to develop and flesh out that Universal didn't give it.
Thank you so much for all the things you said in this video. Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken is a 3D animated kids movie with completely full of wasted potential. It has a mediocre and generic plot with way too fast pacing. As well as having a highly obnoxious and predictable female main antagonist in the form of Chelsea Van Der Zee/Queen Nerissa who's just nothing more and nothing less than a cheap utter knockoff of Ariel. Chelsea is without a doubt the WORST main villain in all of Dreamworks history. Heck, I'll say it--Chelsea, in my opinion, is a Mary Sue Villain character who looks like she needs more character development. Plus, when Chelsea transforms into her true giant monster mermaid form that is Queen Narissa, she looks more like a SIREN than a mermaid. In fact, it would've made a lot more sense if the krakens were at war against the SIRENS instead of just making the mermaids evil just for the sake of the plot and to subvert audience's expectations... and that's just bad, lazy writing in my complete honest opinion. And the only two things that were actually good about this movie were the animation (except for the designs of the human characters) and how much of a relatable main protagonist Ruby Gillman was in the film. It's also just a cheap knockoff of Turning Red meets The Little Mermaid 2 with a hint of Luca, Encanto, Raya and the Last Dragon, and The Incredibles. And another thing, both the Croods and even the Trolls movies were way better animated movies than this one did in comparison. But this is what happens when you make an animated movie for kids that only has a $70 million budget with very poor marketing. Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken gets a 4.5/10 with a three-star rating and a solid C- from me.
The twist was awful, it destroyed any character depth Chelsea had and left her a boring flat 2d villain, it's genuinely Hans tier. And it also makes Grandma's racism justified

Yeah, I agree. We literally have no idea why Narissa is evil and why she wants to destroy the Krakens outside of the movie said so.

tbh i didnt understand the camera takes on chelseas face, making it look like she feels bad for ruby, and then nothing came out of it.
