- In this video we look at common causes for a condition of cranks but wont start on Honda Pilot and Ridgeline vehicles. The subject vehicle is a 2008 Honda Ridgeline equipped with the 3.5L VTEC engine. I give a general overview of common causes and recap the actual cause for this vehicles condition and the diagnostic steps to pinpoint the cause and how repairs were conducted. Yep, Hondas are not known for fuel pump issues but they do fail occasionally. Great video Tim.

My
wifes pilot just did that cranks but doesn't start today in the Walmart parking
lot. It's done this before and long story short the key wasn't sending signal
to the computer and so it would not allow power to the fuel pump. I bypassed it
with an add a fuse running power to the pump when the key is on and it's worked fine until now. I'll dig into it tomorrow. Thinking it’s the fuel pump also. We shall see.

Wasn't starting, so I checked the relay by just turning the key to the number two position with my head next to the relay. Heard the click, great, it works.
Remove the seat and open the fuel pump cover and found the problem.
A mouse had chewed through the wires that power the pump.
Went to a salvage yard, pulled a plug from another truck.
Replaced the plug and it's fixed.

Thank you sir. Have you ever delt with a Pilot or Ridgeline pump failure? I’ve done a few accords and civics but this is a first for me.
I have a 2012 pilot but when I want to turn on it does not start, only a few relays are heard on the right side, the cold truck turns on without problem but once you turn it off for a while you turn it off and it does not start until a good time passes and apparently something it cools.... can you help me

This is a first Honda fuel pump failure I've seen as well. My family members own a lot of Honda's. I also work on friends' cars, which also include a lot of Honda's. In fact, I haven't seen anyone on UA-cam that have failed Honda fuel pumps.
It takes a month to order Honda fuel pump because they have to restart production for the fuel pump since no one ever orders one.
Yes I really didn’t think it would end up being that. It had sat overnight and didn’t start in the morning they said. Oh well, stranger things have happened.
Amazing! I checked UA-cam and there are all kinds of Honda fuel pump videos. My Chevy Caprice has 330,000 miles with the original timing chain and gears. I am so glad I don't have to worry about a timing belt failure, or interval.
Honda is infamous for the fuel pump relay problems. Since they switched to lead free solder, the solder joints on the printed circuit board tend to crack. I've personally reflowed a couple of fuel pump relays. Some of those videos may be misdiag.
Most 4 cylinder Honda's went to oil lubed chains in mid 2000's. V6 Honda's were the last ones with belt. I've seen fair amount of timing chain guide failures on OHC engines. Push rod/OHV engines with the short timing chain are fairly robust.

The fuel pump saved the engine from possible death, now the owner has a chance to do the right thing.
I being a crude person would use a 40Watt 12v bulb on wires, i want to see the ability to deliver power, and its a pretty effect lol :-D.
i have many multimeters but they can be deceptive with there high resistance input.
You covered a lot troubleshooting areas in one video. Honda does make some pretty bullet proof vehicles. As your well aware, when I have to replace a fuel pump in my Chevy truck you have to drop the tank. Not to mechanic friendly. I hope your doing well up there Tim.

It was a job I did on my 98 Chevy which has the flat bed so in my case it was easy to drop the tank (once I drained it). :) I should have listened to you smart guys because I did this job twice....yes, I installed a Dorman the first time. It lasted about a year. :)

Awfully nice of Honda to put that access door there. 30 days to get a pump is crazy!
I got a question what would cause it not to have no spark cuz it's got fuel and everything else but it just doesn't get no spark and it won't come out of park with your foot on the brake turns over and everything but won't get no spark to turn on
I have the same problem....
No spark could be a bad eld, pcm, timing may be so far off that it won't allow it to get spark( but that is really unlikely, it would just run really really bad)

I drive an 06 Ridgeline with 165k miles.
Yesterday leaving my neighborhood coming to a red light my truck stalled. Wouldnt start right away but started after 5 minutes of sitting. Got me to where I was going but ran a little rougher than normal. Tried to leave destination and stalled in the parking spot. Started up and stalled again right before pulling onto Huffman; pushed her back into a parking spot and sat for 30 minutes. Started up and got me about 100 yards away and stalled again. Got towed home. Now she wont start at all, just cranks.
I checked all battery connections and cleaned off all the grounds and the positive terminal. Still no start. Bought a fuel pump from Oriellys and going to swap that out right after checking for fuel pressure. Not sure how to check that without a proper kit, but going to find a way.

you can run the fuel pump with you scan tool in tests there is a spot you can energize the pump for 30 seconds

some times its good to load the circuit a head light bulb Delphi is good they were formed around 2000 ac delco now is not all gm parts hey we have world pack in ny! at least you didn't have to drop a full tank never did a Honda fuel pump we have e 10 gas here
Good call or even backprobe with the pump connected and watch for voltage drop. I’ll roll the dice on this one and hope for he best. Pump isn’t cheap!
Change the belt & water pump before you put a new fuel pump in it... to ensure that it won't break when the engine starts! =)
Actually I will be doing it that way since it’s a few days wait on the pump. I could hardly imagine trying to explain after a belt broke while at the shop. That would suck! Haha.

Some vehicles you have to drop the gas tank customer lucked out with the ridgeline. Seems more vehicles are built with a timi g chain.
Piri Hern I prefer belt drive.... easy pump access is a German thing.
I also prefer timing belts over chains. View a few timing chain vids.

I have a 03 Pilot, I have a cranking but no start issue. I was driving the car and engine just shut off??? what I have verified so far: timing belt is good, 60 psi fuel pressure, good spark, good injector pulse, swapped out a main relay from a different running pilot. car cranks strong but will not start??? Any HELP PLEASE ...

Not my post but I have the same problem I have a new pump a new battery also the main relay works but my pilot still wont turn over 🤦🏾what else could I check
Anyone have any luck on the issue I just picked my moms 06 pilot she was driving and it just shut off out of nowhere now it cranks but won’t start, fuel pump seems to be kickin on I can hear it from the tank. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
