In the annals of Classic Rock PR&TR’s have no worries that this cover will ever be considered the reference version. The group recorded the Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart penned track before The Monkees and Dolenz doesn’t have the voice to surpass Lindsay. Paul plays a more convincing Vox Continental break than the studio musician filling in on The Monkee’s recording.
Out of all the versions of this tune, this one is my favourite. So sorry, Paul Revere and The Raiders and The Monkees. What I needed to begin my day -- this very heavy tune from 1966 and some dazzlin' lovelies -- especially the fabulous gal at time mark 0:21 ! Wow! I'm in her thrall! Many thanks heavenlyblueorange!
Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, first recorded by Paul Revere & the Raiders in '66. The Monkees released their version in "67. You can't go wrong with any version. The Flies version is the heaviest and most psychedelic, devoid of pop psych. Your video adds a face to the song. HB👌 Ty
Thanks for great job bringing me back to the sixties. As for Stepping Stone it’s such a great song anybody with some talent and love of music could do a good version. Thanks for sharing.
This association of freakbeat with the mods of the 1960s is curious. Smocks, necklaces and long hair were the death of mod. Skinheads won't let me lie.
Great version and love the video as usual. Magic Train would be their most psych track of their three singles. Formerly known as No Flies On Us But, The Flies recorded a number of demos and singles and went through a few line-up changes before parting ways in December, 1968. Members went on to be in Bulldog Breed, The Gun, Please (4), and T2 (3), amongst other groups. T2 released on of the great prog albums in It'll All Work Out In Boomland with blistering lead guitar from a still 17 yr old Keith Cross.
First I love this cover song, Secondly I need to point out in this video this is what real women are supposed to look like! You don't any of them with tattoos or hardware all over their faces. And most importantly not the entitled little princesses like today!
I-I-I-I-I'm not your stepping stone, I-I-I-I-I'm not your stepping stone. Well you're trying to make your mark on society, You're using all the tricks that you used on me, You're reading all around about those magazines, The clothes you're wearing are causing every mad scenes. [Instrumental] I-I-I-I-I'm not your stepping stone, I-I-I-I-I'm not your stepping stone. When I first met you, girl, you didn't have no shoes, But, now you're walking around like you're was front page news, You've been awful careful about the friends you choose, But, you won't find my name in your book "Who's Who"now. I-I-I-I-I'm not your stepping stone (get your feet out of my bed, now baby!), I-I-I-I-I'm not your stepping stone (quit calling on my door, now baby!), I'm not your stepping stone (I don't want you anymore, now baby!), I'm not your stepping stone (I'm not your stepping stone!).
Well...I will agree that, this is the best video version of "Stepping Stone". However, as for the actual song's version. I myself appreciate The Monkees original job and I also fancy how Mark And His Gang ...revs it up with their wild guitar and Mark's vocal action. This creation above is still enjoyable for me...being a 60's die-hard ...I too groove the psyche sound and feel their message...but, I am biased..I gravitate more to quick guitar and vocal work. Thank you
I do not think the Monkees created the original. The Liverpool Five version was released in june 1966 or theit LP 'Arrival' on RCA . The Monkees version seems to be issued in august 1966 as a b-side ..... Great song, good version by the Flies
They did but unfortunately not all their own songs were on their albums. They had 2 on their 1st and 2nd albums but their hits were already written for them. Then by the time they released their 3rd album headquarters they had full control of their own recording and television production rights allowing them to write and record their own songs however alot of conflicts went on between Nesmith, Tork with their song producer Don Kirshner. But eventually they were able to write their own songs by 1967 :)
Great Swingin' London dolly girl model footage! (Note : Does anybody recognize famous trans', Amanda Lear/ Tap, next to 60's topmodel superstar, Pattie Boyd, on the video post image? )... BTW, this version is '67, not '66 : the original American garage-band version by the WC Fields Memorial Band that the Monkees covered and made the hit with, is indeed from fall '66.
Hi, your info isn't correct. The first version of 'Stepping Stone' was released by Paul Revere and the Raiders in May '66. The version you mentioned in June '66. The Flies version in Dec.'66. 🤔

Being born in the 70's I always knew this as a Monkees song, but this version is fantastic.
Until five years ago, I had no idea that Paul Revere & The Raiders recorded this song first. Out-of-sight version, by the way.
Being born in the 80s, I thought this was a Minor Threat original song for a long time.

Can’t beat Mark Lindsay’s voice!
Minor Threat does a great version.
This is probably my favourite version as well, and there are quite a few.
@@jamesaron1967 Yes, indeed!
I liked the Monkees versions but to each their own taste.

My bad. You're right. It was released in November 1966.
@@thomassmith8721 The Liverpool Five version was done in early 1966.......great heavy version.
The rock music from the UK is the best
I've never heard a version of this song I didn't love and the video is amazing. So groovy.
Best music ever from late 60's and early '70's. Maybe it was the drugs but that too.
Only recently did I hear this heavy version of 'Stepping Stone'. It sounds very well! Thanks for your swinging video!
Love it.....very groovy man.....and the chicks aren't bad either as they are gorgeous.....love this version of the song. Fantastico!
Those snare rolls remind me of Keith Moon.
Beautiful video.
Amanda Lear at the end. Cool song.
Tremendo garage-psico,me encanta las imágenes de bellas mujeres 60's
Excellent video footage 👏🏻👍
All those lovely young ladies with a tattoo anywhere on therm. How lovely.
Glad you approve of my comment.
Lovely birds , Groovy version !
Classic! heavenlyblueorange is an Art channel....!

Great version. Thumbs up.
This video is soooo groovy, it's just unbelievable.
Best version hands down! The video increases appeal manyfold ;-)
Another killer hbo, keep em comin.

I loved this song when it was on radio in 1966 but my favorite cover is by Minor Threat!

GOOD HEAVY PSYCH
Great heavy version of this song
A real sedated version whith a great undercurrent of 'menace'. Really like it buddy
Lenny Goodman
Undercurrent of menace. Exactly.
Right on! Like mayhem is on the way.
Where are these ladies today? God, I was born 20 years too soon.
La mejor versión. Las mejores mujeres..❤❤❤
Great video. Funny that they don't get the words right in the first verse. Made a record anyway!
Oh, my!
Fantástic versión de los Monkis 💙👌
All the versions are good. The Monkees' arrangement turned it into nearly a punk song. A lot of anger in it.
Minor Threat does a great cover!
I know this song from Sex pistol

Pattie Boyd and Sandie Shaw !!
0:21, 1:43 That's gotta be Pattie Boyd
Great video (is that Pattie Boyd at 0.21?). Cheers!
at 0:59 and 2.26 It's Amanda lear!
SPECIAL STONE by APOLOGETIX a great parody of that song
Pattie Boyd 1:48 ??
No, that is Pattie LLOYD. Easy mistake to make.
I do not think the Monkees created the original. The Liverpool Five version was released in june 1966 or theit LP 'Arrival' on RCA . The Monkees version seems to be

Some excerpts from a Finnish TV commercial for Vestio, which used to be a domestic chain of fashion retailers.
Las imágenes son formidables! Que sexy era Patty Boyd 😍 me gustaria saber los nombres de las otras modelos. Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷
Sandie Shaw at 1:53
damn where's my tractor I got dancin girls to parade about lol
Another one first heavy metal song
Do yourself a big favor, check out the Liverpool Five version recorded in 1966...a T Revelation indeed.
I had no idea this was not written for the Monkees
Hot hot hot
Careful , at least one of them is a man .
I like this as much as the Monkeys version.. not to mention the eye candy.
Do yourself a big favor and check out the pre- punk 1968 version by the Liver[pool Five on the Tube
Sex Pistols version is a goodie
and The Raiders
Great song because this version is a bit more intense and video complements the song…Because it’s Far-Out!!!
Monkees' version is too hard to beat, but this version has always been a Breakbeat classic since it appeared on Choc. Soup.
If I am not wrong Sex Pistols too made their version…
They did. And it's pretty great.
dooi dooi dooi doo

what is a good LP from this band ?? looking to find one
I prefer the raiders version but still a badass version and video
Maybe you re not my stepping stone, but you would still make for an excellent work of power model- aka Kraftwerk model.
