    Imagine you're a struggling actor. You do a scene for some strange space movie because you just need a paycheck. They wind up cutting your scenes and the movie turns into the biggest franchise in movie history and nobody saw you or knows who you are.

      They cut this scene…but they did have him in the trench scene in the original and added the reunion scene in the Yavin hangar. He had an even more brief scene in the original “Batman”…he was the dad that got mugged early in the alley while with his wife and kid. That movie also included William Hootkins (Porkins from Star Wars) as Detective Eckhardt and Billy Dee Williams (Lando) as Harvey Dent.

      Luke was planning on going to the imperial academy to be an officer of the empire, he was longing to follow his friend Biggs, who unknown to him, had joined the rebellion, the empire was many decades old and for the average backwater citizen, offered an opportunity to see the galaxy. @@thejawgz6719 That's not correct, he was planning to be an career officer in the Imperial navy, perhaps on a destroyer. He 'hated' the empire like many in the galaxy did due to things he had heard and what it represented, it was also a manner of speech he used, he was a small planet farmboy and needed adventure, the academy offered that. Han Solo started as a career imperial officer too. he only planned to skip ship after Biggs told him about his plans, Luke hope to serve with Biggs in the rebellion or in solo small acts, Biggs dies during the final battle and Luke cements a hate for the empire. this is an important growth point for the character

      They were cut for a reason - they didn't advance the plot and felt out of place at the start of the movie (really the start of the whole franchise). One of the dumbest things George did in the special editions was put Biggs and Luke's reunion on Yavin IV, when the audience has no idea who this is. One of many examples of how George is an obsessive nitpicky weirdo who doesn't understand his own movies.

    I understand that pacing issues were the reason why some of the early scenes were taken out, but after all these years, I would love for them to be restored and inserted in the movie. To me they are Tatooine gold, and give us a slice of Luke's life that adds a bit of depth to his character, and certainly explains who the "mysterious" Biggs is, and why his death was important to Luke. I think it also adds to Luke's lonliness and frustration of being stuck on Tattoine.

    • @berranari1
      @berranari1 Рік тому +5

      I agree. As well as pacing they wanted to make look even lonelier, even though Owen mentioned that Luke had friends that he could waste time his with. If they did include the scenes, they would have to use CGI to remove the hat that Luke is wearing. The scenes unfortunately were never finished which includes the refining of the acting. I love Mark Hamil, but the acting was not his best. I'm guessing that even though those scenes were cut that it was still useful to Mark as an actor to have shot them. It definitely helped the later scene with Biggs before the battle which was put in the recent editions. 😀 Only people who watch the deleted scene will know that Luke told Biggs that he was the best friend he ever had. This ended up being true, even though Han Solo saved Luke and Obi-Wan sacrificed himself, Biggs gave his life to save Luke when Biggs was young and had not lived a full life. Certainly, the best friend he ever had.

      Yes exactly, Lucas could have doctored them up and used some when he redid the originals. All the old Star Wars fans (Like myself) would have loved the additions. The conversation between Luke and Biggs was gold and really part of the story. Then there was Han with the pretty woman in the cantina. Great stuff.

      It's not just pacing, it's also really out of place. They were in the middle of a space battle and suddenly they cut into this kid fiddling with junks. Not to mention cutting the scenes means we have no idea whatsoever about the planet c3po and r2 are stranded on. We don't even know if there's humans living in there since the first creature we saw are jawas. It feels alien and it really adds to the atmosphere of the story.

      @@farequinas5615The theatrical cut had the worst pacing in the first half. They could've easily cut out most of the boring and insufferable C3PO/R2 scenes before they met Luke, and replaced it with more of Luke's scenes like this.
      Luke's relationship with Briggs was very important because it provides context to his motives, hopes and dreams. It's also one of the very few scenes in the OT that presents a ground view perspective of the Empire.

    I am so pissed that the scenes with Biggs were cut. They not only gave better insight as to why the Empire's defeat is necessary, but they also built a great connection between him and Luke that adds a real emotional weight to the final piloting scene where Biggs is shot down. Between this and the unnecessary Special Edition changes, I really want to edit together my own cut of the movie.

      I agree. They probably could have shown a cut down version if it was not for the hat that Luke had on. That hat would have been too recognizable. You can put it in your version though. Please do it, make a cut for yourself. Also, I think that the family scenes on Naboo from Episode II are great. There is an extended version of this movie. Of all the scenes cut, they should have left in Luke and Biggs scenes. It gave Luke motivation for leaving Tatooine, why he felt lonely, and how the Empire operated...no one wants to be drafted to fight a war). There was also a scene not included here where one of the Grand Moffs (the one Tarkin argues with at the table scene) discusses why he thinks Tarkin is using the Death Star to boost his ego and it being a liability to the Empire since its not yet operational. That scene gives more weight to the part where Vader chokes the other officer as well. I also think the woman Han Solo with should have also been left in the scene. Leia always referred to Han Solo as a scoundrel, and him being depicted as a womanizer would have backed it up.

    It's interesting watching this with added context from over 40 years of new Star Wars plot developments. For example, what Biggs says at 4:07 makes a lot more sense when you think about how Owen was able to (spoiler warning) defend his homestead against Reva in the Kenobi series. It's almost like this is what Biggs is referring to, which is a pretty wild coincidence. Owen and Beru would have become a legend in their community for holding off one of Darth Vader's Inquisitors, but it's also possible he lied about the details of that night to avoid drawing attention. He probably told people he got attacked by sandpeople instead, which would make this deleted scene even more continuous with the canon.
    The milk pouring scene at 5:55 is also pretty interesting because Luke consumes a nearly identical drink in The Last Jedi. No idea if these are all coincidences or if Disney's writers have looked back at unused footage like this for ideas.

They were a part of the story. And should be re-introduced to the francize. "Don't worry about it, Wormy!" I'm sure the fans will love it. "Or, Whamo....Your gonna end up a dark spot on the down side of a canyon wall!!" I'm sure if it was worth filming, than Lucas was worth telling it. So come on, now. Lets do it!!
