  • In this video, Dr. Kushner outlines how to conduct a psychology experiment. The experimental method is a powerful tool for psychologists because it is the only research design that can determine a cause and effect relationship between two variables.

    Hi there! Great video! I am glad to find this video because I am about to do this kind of study for my bachelor thesis. May I know what is extraneous variable for this study? is it like the tempo/rhythm/ volume/ major or minor key of the music that would be play each experimental group?
    And also, do I need to do a survey on what type (genre) of music from my population before I assign each experimental group so they would "engaged" themselves with the music and also to be more precise to compare with the control group?
    I hope you (or any of the viewer watch this video) can help me answer these questions. Thank you!

    Hi, could I ask, if a study involves letting participant watch a video of a well dressed person, and a second video of a causally dressed person, and getting them to select which person they find more trustworthy.
    If the hypothesis is that people would find the well dressed person more trustworthy,
    Would this entire study be considered an experimental study?

    • @PsychExplained
      @PsychExplained  Рік тому

      Great question! I think you have a great study. And it has the potential to be classified as an experiment. A few questions - what is the IV and DV? what is the control group? What is the Experimental group? How are you going to keep all variables constant except for “dress”?

    when you are talking about same - room, temp etc. what about age, gender, education background, how could we randomly select those? thank you very much!

    • @PsychExplained
      @PsychExplained  2 роки тому +1

      Great question. The purpose of random assignment is to account for these individual differences (age, gender). If you have a large enough sample, use random assignment, and create a well-designed rigorous study, these differences (income, education background) should not affect the outcome. Side note - you can’t really randomize “gender” because subjects are born male or female…
      However, you can do “stratified sampling” to make sure all ages, races, etc. are accounted for. I have a video called Sampling that explains this process.

    Is this not the issue of where we have so little understanding about the brain, that we do these kind of tests but then do not back it up with conversations with the people? using music as example, in many of these kind of tests the group is not asked after, did they like this kind of music etc. I ask this because I am doing my own case study that we miss so much conversation (subjective) study when it comes to what we know right now and teach others within mental health and disorders. would like to have contact if possible based on your work, I am very thankful you share this work for others to learn.
