I think Skeleton tree, Is going to be seen as one of the best albums ever made. Stunningly emotional, every note drips with contemplation. Every word written with pain.

Mark Fudge It reminds me of Lou Reed's Magic and Loss. Just pain incapsulated in maniacal shouting and melancholic, breathy whispers. Masterful.

I watched the "pre-album" movie yesterday and this song hit me like a bus. I wanna give Nick Cave and his family the biggest hug possible. Going through this experience is probably the worst that can possibly happen to the parents. I have lost my uncle, my granddad, my dad and my friend recently, all gone in less than a year. It sucks. I've been trying to justify why. Like my grandad died because he was old, my dad died because he had a depression, but it's all bullshit, there's no why in death. No matter how hard we try to tighten up any event with a reason and make it meaningful there's no way to justify the death of a kid. And we are left with an empty space in our hearts which will always stay empty and with a grief which is slowly turning to a subtle sadness.

I do believe in a life after death. But we are all humans after all and it's a hard work of switching focus from "what is happening to me right here right now" to observing life in its eternity without emotional attachment. Sometimes I need and I want to feel what I am feeling

Can't wait for this album and this MASTERPIECE to win the much deserved GRAMMY! Cave is the master of mystery and his music is the elixir of life. Some go and some stay behind
    Some never move at all
Girl in amber trapped forever, spinning down the hall
Let no part of her go unremembered, clothes across the floor
Girl in amber lumber slumber shuts the bathroom door
The phone, the phone, the phone it rings, it rings, it rings no more
The song, the song, the song it spins since nineteen eighty-four
The phone, the phone, the phone, it rings, the phone, it rings no more
The song, the song it's been spinning now since nineteen
And if you want to bleed, just bleed
And if you want to bleed, just bleed
And if you want to bleed, don't breathe
    A word
Just step away and let the world spin
And now in turn, you turn
You kneel, lace up his shoes, your little blue-eyed boy
Take him by his hand, go move and spin him down the hall
I get lucky, I get lucky 'cause I tried again
I knew the world it would stop spinning now since you've been gone
I used to think that when you died you kind of wandered the world
In a slumber till you crumbled, were absorbed into the earth
Well, I don't think that any more
The phone it rings no more
The song, the song it spins, it spins now since nineteen eighty-four
The song, the song, the song it spins, it's been a spinning now
And if you'll hold me I will tell you that you know that
And if you want to leave, don't breathe
And if you want to leave, don't breathe
And if you want to leave, don't breathe a word
    And let the world turn
The song, the song it spins, the song, it spins, it spins no more
The phone, it rings, it rings
    And you won't stay
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me

To create music like this, out of the horrific tragedy they-- and I say that directing it at everyone in the band, because while Nick was Arthurs father, you know the Bad Seeds ALL knew him --created... a haunting, beautiful tragic masterpiece.

To me girl in Amber reminded me of a ghost trapped in time, doing the same patterns over and over again(stuck spinning down the hall) and "the girl in slumber shuts the bathroom door" like ghosts tend to do when they haunt a place the're attached to. The movie made this even more haunting as the camera floated above the winding stair case and through the cracks of the walls. Also And who is the blue eyed boy that joins her? Could it be his son?

The "don't touch me" part at the end reminds my of the resurrection of Jesus, where he tells Mary "Touch me not for I have not yet ascended to the Father". Perhaps there could be some Christian allegory for the whole album. The opening track being entitled "Jesus Alone" recalls Jesus being alone on the cross, even God having forsaken him

  • @buckleygeneration
    @buckleygeneration 8 років тому +28

Definitely the saddest-sounding on the album, possibly the most beautiful as well (Distant Sky and I Need You are close though). I love how the lead and backing vocals both seem to be ignoring the rhythm just slightly. It's off-kilter, which just adds to the feeling of the song.

    • @TheClever69
      @TheClever69 8 років тому

From what I know, the album was recorded live in one-take, with no edits or overdubs or excess post-production

    • @buckleygeneration
      @buckleygeneration 8 років тому +1

Not necessarily the impression I got from the film, but they did mention they spent a lot less time on ironing out the kinks and post production. So the out-of-sync thing might've just been because they didn't feel like fixing it, but regardless of intention, I love the result.

    • @TheClever69
      @TheClever69 8 років тому +3

I haven't actually seen the film sadly, but I read somewhere about the songs being done in very few takes, but that might have been the performances that were in the film. The version of Jesus Alone on the album is different than the video version, notably one of the lyrics is different. Regardless, you can tell they didn't iron it out as much, and Cave's vocals are a lot less polished than usual, which really works for an album with this subject matter

    • @leagueofshadows
      @leagueofshadows 8 років тому +3

+TheClever69 I was one of the lucky few who caught the film on its debut in cinemas. Harrowing, Visceral, Mindblowing, Truthful, Sad & Introspective is how it feels. They have done a great job and this is their #1 masterpiece. There was a standing ovation in our cinema after the session ended. Some of us were in shock. It is hard not to share the band's pain and most of us felt a deep hollow. It was very sad to see Mr Cave crying all the way through. In a way the album is cathartic. I guess grieving is a natural process which takes a long time.

Agreed, I was left in stunned silence by the end. Just. Wow. Not in the best sortsa ways, but in the best sortsa ways-- wow, thanks for this brutally honest and brutally direct view into you and your friends grief, and wow, thanks, I ... Fuck me, it left me sadder than fuck. Happy, the jokes in the film were good, but the overall makes me just put up best wishes to the Cave family, and the Bad Seeds, and just kinda sit in a room and cry.

I saw a door open, there it was, a cabin behind the gas station, I dont have a car, I dont know how to drive, I was just taking a leak, I got close to the door. Gasoline smell was in the air. I looked inside. My mother was there, she was disappointed in me, my father was there, he was digging a hole on the floor, I saw my wife, she was holding her hand to her mouth, she was trying not to laugh I think. I saw myself there, I was sleeping and there was a fly on my nose. I got away from there. There was chill behind my back. Cars were going off the road with a velocity I never saw. I wanted to touch it, and held out my hand to the traffic. Gasoline smell on the air. No friends around. No music. I saw the apocalypse that day. And lived for another day.

I think that Skeleton Tree has some of the Push the Sky Away context hidden somewhere in all of its tracks
except this song, doesn't it have the opposite idea to Push the Sky Away(the song)? what I understood, "and if you wanna bleed, just bleed and let the world turn" is that we and our problems are insignificant. our death won't keep the world from turning
but Push the Sky Away enforces this sort of do your thing and don't care about people's opinion (similar to Rings of Saturn, see, I told you both albums are similar) and feels anti suicidal (i.e. push "heaven" away).

If you like this song, you are really going to like PJ Harvey's cover of Red Right Hand.

This recording sounds weird. It doesn't sound like Nick Cave's voice, to me. Actually, it sounds like it's synthesised from samples of dozens of people's voices. Compare with this, which is how I remember Nick Cave sounding: ua-cam.com/video/xKq39e7SBOE/v-deo.html

I cannot believe this song has only 64K views, but some garbage music like Bieber or Selena G gathers hundreds of millions views. World , what`s wrong with you?

I can explain it in a few sentences: People are animals, we have urges and appetites and those appetites are extremely simple, such that, fast food comes to mind quicker than substance, dogma quicker than spirituality, and consumption before art. It's part of just being human. Most people are afraid of the truth, pain, something real and would rather have something superficial so that they don't have to face themselves.

the whole album is sad...losing a child...we're lucky he even continued on. i doubt there's any type of parody going on. sounds like he's pretty much crying for his sons return. that's what i get out of it. this whole album sounds like what it must have felt like to lose your child.

Well, sometimes you just get to be extra sad. That's life, man. If you've never experienced anything close to what this song might represent, you have lived an exceptionaly happy life and I am glad. But I personally am greateful for people like Nick Cave who are able to put such terrible sadness into art like this. I am not trying to be mean either. Just felt the need to aswer...

Some go and some stay behind
    Some never move at all
Girl in amber trapped forever, spinning down the hall
Let no part of her go unremembered, clothes across the floor
Girl in amber [?] slumber shuts the bathroom door
The phone, the phone, the phone it rings, it rings, it rings no more
The song, the song, the song it spins since nineteen eighty-four
The phone, the phone, the phone, it rings, the phone, it rings no more
The song, the song it's been spinning now since nineteen
And if you want to bleed, just bleed
And if you want to bleed, just bleed
And if you want to bleed, don't breathe a word
Just step away and let the world spin
And now in turn, you turn
You kneel, lace up his shoes, your little blue-eyed boy
Take him by his hand, go move and spin him down the hall
I get lucky, I get lucky cause I tried again
I knew the world it would stop spinning now since you've been gone
I used to think that when you died you kind of wandered the world
In a slumber til your crumble were absorbed into the earth
Well, I don't think that any more the phone it rings no more
The song, the song it spins now since nineteen eighty-four
The song, the song, the song it spins, it's been a spinning now
And if you'll hold me I will tell you that you know that
And if you want to leave, don't breathe
And if you want to leave, don't breathe
And if you want to leave, don't breathe a word
    And let the world turn
The song, the song it spins, the song, it spins, it spins no more
The phone, it rings, it rings and you won't stay
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
    Don't touch me
