Thanks for showing both methods! Did it once with draw string that was too thick and had to restring. Was able to use the forest method since cord was already strung and the process went quick!
Thanks for such detailed DIY repair jobs. Many propabably thought such trivial thing, and cheap items, no More as everything gets so expensive now. Penny saved penny earned an American grandfather adviced all his siblings.
What if I cannot raise the blinds (step 1) because one of the strings ripped and got sucked up into the mechanism? There's only one string to pull, which only raises one side of the blinds.
Hi there, You can still take the blinds down and complete the repair. You'll find the end of the broken string up in the headrail of the blinds and can remove it.
@@fixmyblinds Great video. My blinds are also faux wood. When opened and extended all the way down, they are slanted down on the right like going downhill. Can you tell me how to fix? Thanks.
I am trying to replace a slat in my blinds, but they use this looping lift string system instead of a knot. Is it possible to do without restringing the entire lift string system?
Hi Kendra, There's no way to replace a slat without taking the lifting strings at least partially out. I wish there was an easier way, but there's not.
Robin - Those strings are called ladders. Here's a video that shows how to replace the string ladder on a horizontal blind: ua-cam.com/video/G5seZ45_i_Y/v-deo.html.
My blinds don't have a hole through the middle. Rather the lift cords go through loops in the string ladder, on the outside of both the front and back of the blind. I thought this video was to demo that sort of repair. Do you have such a video? Is the formula to calculate the length of cord needed the same?
Hi Lisa, We don't have a video that shows restringing a blind with string ladder that has loops. The formula for calculating the string length might be the same as what's in this video, but there are several variations of lifting cords configurations for string ladder with loops. If you'd be able to take a few pictures of the top rail and bottom rail of your blind where the lifting strings go into the rails and email them to us, we can let you know a good formula for string length. Our email is service@fixmyblinds.com.
I just purchased new blinds that have no strings for lifting. It lifts from the bottom (like the cloth blinds). I watched a video instructing me to hang while taking out slats, but when I took out the buttons and untied the knot in the button (which were very taunt and hard to do so), I lost the strings altogether. Also, I have little loops instead of slots in the slats. Please advise.
Hi Debbie, Cordless operating blinds like yours are different than the blinds in this video. Since the lifting strings on your blind zipped back into the top, the blinds will need to be replaced. There's no way to get the strings back out once they retract into the mechanism in the top rail. What sort of repair were you trying to make on these blinds? Were you wanting to shorten them?
I was replacing broken slats on my main stay cordless mini blind and all of a sudden the center string on both sides quickly disappeared. How can I restring my cordless mini blind? Please help me.
Hi Donna, I'm sorry to hear that one of the strings retracted into the top rail. With cordless blinds, there is a spring-loaded mechanism in the top rail that the lifting strings retract into. Once the strings retract into that mechanism, there's no way to get them out. This video is for standard operation blinds where you pull on cords to raise them up and down, not for cordless blinds. The only fix is to replace the blind.
Yes, it really was difficult and challenging. But. Just following the instructions step by step, (and fighting the string that was not really cooperative), I was successful. Yay! I just considered it a good challenge for the brain.
Hi there, There could be a few things going on depending on how your blind operates. I'm happy to help you determine what the issue is, but need more information. Do you pull on strings to raise the blinds up and let them down? If not, how do you raise and lower them? You can reply here and let me know. Or, if you'd like, you can email some pictures of your blind to us at service@fixmyblinds.com and we help you troubleshoot the problem.
@@fixmyblinds yes the blind operates by pulling the string up and down. (no wand) The slats are 2". I also found that some ladder strings are frayed. I am going to attempt to replace them. I probably also will need lift strings. Watching the videos gave me some confidence to make the attempt to replace both ladder and lift strings. My only question now is, do I string the lift string first then the ladder string? This seems more logical to me. I will be putting an order through shortly. Than you, Jo
Hi Jo, You actually will put the new ladder strings on first and then thread the lifting strings through the holes in the slats. Since you pull on strings to raise/lower the blind and your blind is stuck, it may be that the cord lock is jammed. I'd support the bottom rail of the blind, pushing up slightly, and then try to unlock the cords. Sometimes, the blind needs the extra support. If that doesn't work, you may need to use a small thin screwdriver to dislodge the rollers inside the cord lock. Is this blind still hanging up or is it down?
Did you try to unlock it while pushing up on the bottom rail? Or, did you try a screwdriver inserted into the lock to move the rollers? If you'd like, you can take it down and send some pictures of the cord lock to service@fixmyblinds.com. We can help figure out what's going on.
Hi, my wife and I want to paint our blinds a dif color and will need to redo all the strings, do you have specs or recommendation where/what kind of string we need
@@fixmyblinds I fished the cord out, untangled it, then strung it back through the blinds and attached it to the bottom with those plugs. It sorta worked
My blinds look exactly like that, except mine doesn't have a cord lock that lowers the blinds. Has only the tilt rod. My blinds go up but not down. Crazy design. How do I lower my blinds?
Rich, do you push/pull on the bottom rail to raise and lower the blinds? If possible, send us some pictures of your blind; we'd love to help you out! Our email is service@fixmyblinds.com.
It looks like if your pull string only drops one cord the formula is Width + 2x the length of each string. Mine ties off at the bottom and does not double back over a pulley.
Patrick, if your string ties off in the bottom rail, the formula for cutting a new string is two times the height plus the width of the blind. Each new string will need to be that length. Here's a video showing how to restring a blind that has the lift string tied off in the bottom rail: ua-cam.com/video/u95RlGKMUnU/v-deo.html

Hi Bobbi, This page has step by step directions about this repair. Since the lifting cord disappeared, it sounds like you have cordless blinds. Cordless blinds operate by pushing and pulling on the bottom rail to raise and lower them. Once the strings have disappeared into the spring-loaded mechanism in the top of the blinds, there's nothing you can do to fix them and they'll have to be replaced.

The word Faux makes no difference as wood and faux would be repaired in the same manner.
Same for the word wood. Could not be either. They are just blinds with this mechanism.
Why blind manufacturers use cheapy strings, it's so annoying
I went to replace a broken slat. When I unknotted the pull string, it disappeared. Both techniques have strings still there to lift the blind. Help.
