That first year was "rough" at first, because i was trying to figure everything out and UNDERSTAND rather than memorize. I still go for understanding now, but now i know what stuff is esoteric research junk and what's board relevant. That's why i studied so much. (to answer the question as to why major in something other than "sciences" if going to med school... i didn't decide to go to med school until after graduating.) Thanks for the comment!
I really enjoyed this video. It's always great when medical schools make videos documenting the first year of medical school. Some schools never have videos like this. Fantastic job Minnesota! :D
I'm applying towards med school next year! My friend is in medical school, and I'm scared of all the courses. I'm taking fairly difficult classes with a rigorous schedule to prepare for medical school. I'm in a premedical enrichment program right now. I hope everyone works hard like me.
Keep doing good in high school. But remember that in the United States, you can apply to med school only after you have taken your MCAT's and have received a Bachelor's degree. You want to maintain a 3.4-4.0 GPA in college. The higher the GPA , the better your chances are of being accepted. Same goes for MCAT scores. The higher the better. But you want to aim for something between 29-45 on the MCAt's. Talk to a counselor. Some degrees really prepare you for MCAT. I"m a physics major.
I'm going to be a Bio-premed freshman myself. You have an excellent GPA, just keep doing what you're doing and don't give up. I volunteered at a hospital for about 7 months. If you look around for application forms at volunteer departments at hospitals nearby, just fill them out and they'll most likely interview you for a position. I'm sure you could also look for them online for a specific hospital as well. I hope that helps. =)
The best place to start is to visit the Medical School Admissions website and review some of the information there. You can find that website in the video description. Medically related and human experience is essential when applying to Medical School. Thanks for your inquiry.
if you're really motivated and raise your gpa and do really well on the mcat as well as do some extra curriculars and most likely get a masters and clinical experience then you might be able to
If you get a 40 on your MCATS then, maybe do an extra year getting your masters in Biomedical Science. If no US medical school will take you, try a medical school in the Caribbean's that's accredited by the US medical boards. Then you can later apply for residency in the US by taking the USMLE and scoring really high, and be at the top of your US med class.
Halima, you'll want to attend pharmacy school to be a pharmacist. Check out the UMN Pharmacy UA-cam page or for more info about getting your PharmD to be a practicing pharmacist!
I'm a college sophmore majoring in biology and pre-med. My gpa is 3.95, but I have zero volunteering experience and I'm also worried that my grades may not stand the test of time by the time I finish my Bachelor of Science degree. Hopefully I will have what it takes to make the cut.
I am premed student first year, and i'm wondering what should I do during the school semesters and summer that will increase my chances of having a strong application?
Do things you enjoy during the day? yea right... more like work hard all day and all night and maybe get an hour or two free after the exam every couple weeks.
Hmmmmm for me wking up 5.30 am doing pray breakfast, collage study study study 30 min break study study nd again study till 5.00pm coming home , cooking for diner nd again study study study pray sleep at 11.45 hahahah ur so lucky
@thegarbageman21~I know how U feel. A lots changed since '83 when I graduated med school but I know even then there was much talk of change due 2 the stress which begins when U walk in as a 1st yr & thru UR 2nd yr which in my day was study, study, study 9 to 5? I've got 2 admit that made my eyebrows crawl down my back! Clinical time began w/3rd yr when yr 1 & 2 had weeded-out weaker students. Sleep? 4 the next 10 yrs (8yrs in the US) 4get it, or I should say in your dreams? On graduation con't
Oh god why didnt i follow my dream to become a musician or a writer but instead got into med school? i could have been anything i wanted to be and i went for med school, silly me -.- i hope it doesnt ruin my life apart from the medical life which im not even sure i will enjoy in the first place! argh and i hope i wont regret getting into med school over the things i loved the most such as music and arts and even maths xD
Hi, I'm a little bit confused about medical school,i wanna be a pharmacist and im a junior in high school.. can you go to medical school right after High School? or Do you go to college and study something such as biology?and how long does the it take? Thanks :)
@aaahhhhaaaahhhh Thanks, good luck to you too. That's an advantage you have- you're a Physician at 24, In the United States, since you need a 4 year BS and then 4 years of Medical Schools, you'd be 26.
Only study 9-5? Yeah friggin right... Maybe if you were a bio major, you went straight to med school after graduating, and you remember all the material from undergrad. If you're not in that category, you will be studying every waking hour of the day... Like I do.. Haha ugh....
@aaahhhhaaaahhhh You'll also be paid significantly less than US graduates if you stay in Mexico, and if you decide to come to the United States the only two residencies you have a shot at would be Internal and Family Practice. If that's where your future is, best of luck. If you're looking for anything else, you're at a disadvantage.
LOL do you have hard core documents to support your opinion? I am not going around giving terrible advice, I am giving an suggestion which should be lead by their own personal research. A lot of people don't know alternative options, and this person may look into it and deiced it the best or worst option for them. If you disagree with my suggestion then feel free to answer that person directly with your ideal option. Just saying smh
hmmm so she is learning how to suture dummies / give exams in year 1 of med school... I don't buy it. Im a 2nd year med student and all we do is study study study study study poop and then study some more. And for all the pre-meds out there who think med school is so "hard." Dont worry! Studying isn't hard. You get used to it and even start to enjoy it. The hard part is the stress. The time restraints and the seemingly constant overload of things to do. The stress of impending tests / etc.
Yeah I heard that a lot "since I was 5 I wanted to be a doctor" that pharase is very common now in our days, but by working hard and studying hard its not always like that. Every person who applies to medical school they all have a great GPA, but they dont have a good MCAT scores and interview scores which that is where most students dont do well on that portion.
3/I don't think people know the amt of info a Dr brings 2 every case, the mental card flip U can almost watch as a good Dr discards 1 poss Dx after another till finding 1 which COULD
2/Internship meant cheap labor, no sleep & constant stress. July, '83 Lord help U if U'd an ER visit since U wouldn't B seeing a Dr, U'd B seeing ME! We all felt this way & it was sink or swim then. U didn't get thru w/o hearing of the suicide of at least 2 or 3 of UR grad class. Residency meant a bit more free time but still not much & life was medicine. Lot of marriages, most didn't make it thru residency. Yeah, there R 007 Dr.'s but the majority were & still R good people who DO care. con't
@PenetratorAlpha Most college students don't even finish their degree. But once failed premeds realize they couldn't cut it out in math, engineering, or any other hard science, they switch to something pathetic like Political Science.
I think the Anglo med schools have a zero tolerance on failures but he let you redeem yourself. 100% pass on topics, grade based on # of trials. Western Europe med schools are also different. Less favor on bookworms/Harvard but simpler yet critical.
3:06: "What I feel like we've done is really provide students with a pleTHORa of..." PleTHORa? Really? I mean, I'm sure it's a great medical school and she's going to be a fine doctor but...really? Has she not encountered that word in conversation and learned how to pronounce it yet? Weird.
9 years later Thuy has a 4.9/5 star rating on Allina Health as a family physician
They make med school look so awesome
Cause it is.

How did it go
I'm glad I could help, and thank you, you too with your Sophomore year!
Wonder if the background music designed to distract what the speaker is saying?
IKR?!
Thanks for the advice; will definately be looking into it. Good luck with your first year!

@9klam9 it might be hell, but us pre-meds are still envious that your in there :P

so regret to not chose medicine as a career. I want to work hard as a architecture student but don't know where and what to start....
Well, for one, some of the Caribbean schools are owned by Devry...
I'll send you a few links. Sorry if I came off as rude, that wasn't my intention.
Are there a lot of speeches and presentations to large audiences in med school?
wow impressive...you get to do suturing in your 1st year??
great video by the way!
when you're there, you're there, you'll feel the same way when you get there. :)
9am to 5pm is more than enough time...
I'm an IB student and getting 5 hours of sleep is more than enough... and I'm still in high school
Now you’re a doctor 🎉
I had a 3.68 and go into medical school.
I am premed student first year, and i'm wondering what should I do during the school semesters and summer that will increase my chances of having a strong application?
Medical school made me wish I worked harder in undergrad.
Do things you enjoy during the day? yea right... more like work hard all day and all night and maybe get an hour or two free after the exam every couple weeks.

In college: Choose 2 - Good grades, sleep, and social life.
In Med School: Choose 1 - Good grades, sleep, and social life.
I have a 3.6 GPA and a 3.6 in Biology and its my freshman year of high school.. Can those grades get me in Med school? I wanna be a general surgeon.

Sucks for you - In England we can enter med school straight out of school (i.e., at 18)! :D
Med school students have extra curricular activities?? Never heard of that.
@halima sadiya you go to college, and study science .
@aaahhhhaaaahhhh

Lol, if you're in the US, you need an undergraduate degree first BEFORE you attend medical school.

Hmmm. 9 to 5? Ohh! you mean 9AM to 5AM.
dat handwriting*___*
Why are they trying to make medschool seem laid back? If you have time to do "social things"...somethings not right, especially in your first year :P
