  • The Toyota 4Runner and Subaru Outback are two midsize SUVs that offer great off-roading capabilities. In this video, Travis Langness takes a close look at a used 2019 4Runner and a used 2020 Outback. He assesses how each of these off-road SUVs handles the outdoors to help you decide which one would be a good fit for your off-roading needs. Are you looking for a used SUV that is more geared toward hard-core off-roading and climbing rocks? Or are you interested in one that offers more in the way of daily around-the-town driving? Travis tackles these questions and more in our off-road SUV comparison of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner vs. 2020 Subaru Outback.

    I don't think that these two vehicles are comparable. The 4Runner is a truck and the Outback is a car. If you want a daily commuter with some dirt roads on the weekend, then the Subaru is definitely the better choice. I have a 4Runner and the lack of acceleration and handling can be annoying sometimes, BUT when you go on difficult trails then you know why you bought it. It is true that the technology (especially engine and transmission) is outdated, but it is 100% reliable. That is different from Subaru's CVT which does not seem to last very long and is not bullet proof at all, at least not when you try going on roads that are more than just unpaved. I would never call any MODERN Subaru an off-roader.
    There is no right or wrong, or better or worse. It is pure preference. I think both cars are great when used for what they are intended to.

    So the outback is cheaper, gets better gas mileage and can go off-road well enough for 99% of drivers. The choice is easy... 4runner. The outback is the better buy but few cars are cooler then a 4runner.

      @@s4awd2 I think the pro is kind of a waste, you sacrifice off road and sport capability to get a mediocre blending of both when compared to either the trd offroad or trd sport.

    4runner wins with it's non cvt transmission and non direct injection engine With the 4runner platform it makes it much easier to mod the vehicle if you choose to do so later on.

    Subaru uses a Touch screen just to adjust the AC? No thanks! There is a thing as too MUCH tech!
    Why didn't you compare a 2020 Subaru to a 2020 4Runner, instead of a 2019? Seems like you tide Toyota's hands behind its back because you knew the 2020 model made the jump to the larger, 8" touch screen and the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety tech. We have a '22 4Runner and it has Adaptive Cruise Control, as well all the safety stuff you'll ever need, like Blind Spot Monitor and Lane Departure Warning. But all the basics are easy to operate and intuitive, and all the safety stuff can be adjusted, and some turned off. I do wish the 4Runner's Infotainment screen were higher rez, AND had a faster processor...that thing is very laggy at times!
    If you'll never do any kind of uneven road, 4wheeling, the Subaru might be a better choice. But if you do, the 4Runner is a hands down winner. It WILL take you places the Subaru can't go, but also go everywhere it can go with it's own tough style and simplicity. I actually find it quiet and very comfortable on road. AND, the rear cargo hatch window on the 4Runner rolls down :-). Not to mention, how long will that Subaru CVT transmission last, and what's the cost to replace it??

    • @stringcheese1731
      @stringcheese1731 Рік тому

      CVT's last a significantly longer period of time due to not having as much metal on metal contact nor needing transmission fluid or gears. CVT is a FAR superior technology than any 5 speed. Most sports cars use them. 2022 Toyota Supra even uses CVT and smashes shifting records. Much cheaper cost to replace/repair, again due to the lack of excessive metal parts. You can go further back in time and watch as 4runner falls even further behind in technology. 4runner wins in heavy offroad and nothing else.

    If you have a sketchy winter commute. And want a safe solid commuter. Go with Subie. Even a Forrester. If you wanna pretend to be an off roader like 100% of the raptors you see around town, then sacrifice tech and safety for looking 🆒

    I work as a contract nurse, and even when I’m not on contract, I don’t mind driving to a vacation spot. I love both vehicles after test driving, and am still torn on which I want. I will say that the Toyota May slightly edge out due to reliability though.

      I love my 4Ruuer (s) too! But I think the video is actually pretty informative in drawing out the differences between the two. The Subaru can handle mild dirt roads, and is more comfortable with much better gas mileage and on-road driveability. But all those uneven moguls showed it is NOT a choice for even moderate off-roading But will say the video was a little disingenuous about noise and on-road comfort, and should have emphasized that it will do much more than the Subaru and a MUCH better all-around vehicle for folks that go off road occasionally.
