At 4:47 "FS" stands for "Files System", so the command, "FORMAT FS=" means "FORMAT FILE SYSTEM=" followed by either "FAT32", "NTFS", or "exFAT". Great video, thanks!

You can try. If it shows up in the list then yay. Otherwise you might need to research the drive itself. Some storage devices are specific to the machine/device they were designed for.

It sounds like you are concerned you lost files on those partitions. You need to download a data recovery program. I'd look around on Google for programs like recuva Otherwise if the windows partition you can try running a windows install disc or USB repair on boot up to fix a broken windows install

That would mess with your windows system. I wouldnt recommend doing that. You normally tweak that drive with other tools that preserve or repair the Operating system.
I know this video was posted 2 years ago but I think I could still get help. So I accidentally unplugged the power of my computer during an update and when I turned it back on I had BSoD, I believe that the updates don’t work with previous updates which cause this BSoD so I’m currently using an external drive trying to find a way to fully update the main drive, is there a way to do this or not? If there is a way, can you reply me on how to do this.
If you can still get on the computer and use it. I believe you can create a windows recovery/repair disc and boot from that disc to fix any problems that might have happened during the update not completing. You can google that problem, its pretty common, and im sure microsoft has some suggestions too.

Are your Drives Functioning Properly? Are they in a format used by a different kind of computer system? Are they unformatted? If the drive in question doesnt show up as a proper windows volume. Then it thinks that it needs to be formatted.
This is great but how do I actually allocate the space. For example external hard drive allocate 300GB and call it Y drive. The manual way is 'shrink volume' but what is the actual line command?
Hmmm. It should work more or less the same way. I dont have one on hand to do an in-depth tutorial. Lets use the computer management interface since you've got a new SSD. Go to your file explorer, find your "My Computer" icon and right click it and select "Manage". This window is going to contain a lot of stuff. Dont get too concerned about all that. Just find the left hand sidebar and look for "Storage" with an arrow next too it. Uncollapse that menu by clicking the arrow and select "Disk Management". Once you select Disk Management the center of the panel should change to display some blocks or chunks that represent your hard drives. It will tell you what they're formatted as, and if you right click them it will give you some options including formatting them. Looking at this list you should have your original drives and they'll have a name possibly and have the format NTSF. Not sure what a default SSD looks like, but you should see a drive thats close to yours in size. It may look smaller than the space size written on the box because your computer system reserves some of the space for system things. No need to worry. From where right click your SSD and click format. When the format window pops up you can label it whatever you like or let the system do it if you dont care. I like to label mine things like Footage, Design Space, or whatever. Set the File System to NTSF. Allocation Size to Default. and just let it Quick Format. I cant remember what Enable File and Folder Compression is used for so leave that UN-Checked. Click ok and it should format pretty quickly and you can start using it.
I have a old Dell tower from a friend he tried to install another operating system onto it but something went wrong . I don't have a recovery disc and the DVD drive is broken anyway I can restore everything back to factory settings and start it Asif it was a new pc
Are you asking if you can? Restoring to factory default resets some things and erases your files. But some stuff remains like system errors and other problems. So make sure you do a little research if you need to fix something first.

Chupacabra Tutorials The problem is I can’t get into window and every solution I tried end result was “Preparing Automatic Repair”...I couldn’t even boot into safe mode. I’m past that issue now and have a win10 on a usb ready to dl but now I’m in a constant loop of booting into the bios automatically. Really stressful :(

@@CosmicStench_ Well.... I would look for a Windows Update Troubleshoot guide. That gives you a list of things to check for that might cause problems when updating. Go through that list, and maybe a couple others and just check everything that might be causing the problem. Could be a messed up driver from Nvidia or AMD. Could be you need to repair your main copy of windows first before it can update correctly. If you get to the stage you still think its a hardware problem. Then Id make a list of all the major components in your computer, and then look up how to test and see if they are failing or something is wrong with them. Then if you're sure its not a hardware issue. Then Id do a fresh install of windows.

What drive is giving you trouble? If its your primary drive you'll need to fix that with a windows CD. Cus a secondary drive shouldnt effect your CMD Prompt window at all.
I dunno if it does that. You wouldnt want too because volume 1 is what contains your OS. Computers typically dont want to delete themselves. I blame skynet

I want to do the same as Krunel stated above and I’m sure it must be possible. If the command prompt is being run from the startup disk would it be possible to format drive in order for a fresh install? (The hardware does not seem to have crashed because I was able to use Msdos to copy and transfer precious files from my ssd c: drive operating system over to my backup disk d: drive.

You'd need to do that with your windows disk on startup. Without the OS you cant format things with this tool. Its like using a hammer to hammer itself.
You need your OS CD for that. That will allow you to overwrite your existing OS and be able to boot your computer. WARNING this may erase your files. So back those up first to an external hard drive or something.

@@nut__cracker Most computers you run into after a certain date of creation have the ability to boot from USB to install an OS. The Trick tends to be. Is it enabled by default? You are going to have to look at who makes you motherboard. Then read up on its BIOS settings. Some computer (Including my older one) have it as a feature. But its disabled by default. You can easily pop into your BIOS settings and change that. Usually if you look up your motherboard and do a little looking someone, somewhere, has explained the process.
Larry, i hope you don't mind helping me more. I found the motherboard: HP 84A6 but I'm not sure what to do or search for now. Any help is appreciated Larry.
You can always just right click and format a drive from the file explorer. There is also a tutorial on that. Though the system is smart enough now it should be mostly self explanatory.

formatting your drive will result in all of your data to be lost. If you want to recover your data just put it in a flash drive or something

You would need to consult whatever documentation is available for Steam OS. Ive never used it before so I cant provide anymore help than that.

Thats typically the drive you have your Operating System on. Normally you format this when you install windows and then leave it alone.

That might mean something is borked. Hardware borked. I'd snag a troubleshooting guide for that symptom and go from there.

what does system reserved (D:) means ? i only have one HD which is the C and i can see that i have a system reserved (D:) as well
System reserved is space used by critical operating system functions. If you mess with that you end up breaking stuff.

Disk might still be in use from something. You can look up how to unmount the drive so you can format it.

Id prooze the documentation on Microsoft's website for that. But remember anytime you partition a drive you lose anything thats already on it.

You can always just right click and format a drive from the file explorer. There is also a tutorial on that. Though the system is smart enough now it should be mostly self explanatory.
