Love your stories! You seem to have the same talent as I……. Starting something new, learning a new skill but starting on one of the more difficult patterns! Lol. Enjoy the journey! The Lion project sounds gorgeous! I too think the 8 stitches are overlap where the page bends. No need to re-grid.🤩🙃
I am watching my Leisure Arts magazines and they have 1 row overlap (it repeats). So, in the second page the one on the right, the first row is the last from the first page. And Yes, it is a 15 grid in the center. In my opinion, half and quarter stitches makes the pattern more real and detailed. The lion is going to be gorgeous with those flosses. I am glad that your husband is so special.
I really appreciate you taking the time to take a look at the charts you have and confirm that interior grid is a different count. This gives me more reassurance as I'm in the process of fixing that center grid. So far so good!
Love your Flosstube. You are a natural! I loved Sons of Blackbird Mountain. I just downloaded Daughters of Northern Shores. I plan on listening as I get my house ready for hosting Thanksgiving!
Ooh, Linda, that is such a joy to hear! I am blessed that you enjoyed the first book and hope that you enjoy the sequel. Thank you for listening and sharing with me. We are hosting as well so my plan for today includes lots of baking. :) I hope you enjoy your prep and have a wonderful Thanksgiving tomorrow!
Always enjoy your videos. Love the finish and your WIPs. Hope this helps in your Santa. You have 8 stitches in left, then 2 blank squares, then a line(vertical), then 2 blank squares which one is an overlapping square, then 8 stitches. So each 10x10 block is 10 stitches. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for weighing in. I really appreciate it! I've been taking a careful look at the chart and I think I might have found the issue and am so glad for all of the help that you and everyone has given!
I purchased the Christmas journey pattern after seeing your last floss tube - it’s gorgeous! With your grid - when listening, I was sure there was some over lap and that was causing the grid to not be 10x10, however when I look at the pattern, this is not the case. I unfortunately think you will need to redo your grid on that portion of the chart. Couple things I did notice - there is ONE line of over lap in my digital pattern (although my pattern is laid out on the page slightly different then yours) . I would check your printed pattern carefully. Also, the digital pattern was priced reasonable and you are able to zoom in on the symbols. You may want to look at purchasing that to make your stitch a bit easier. Also - full coverage is so much fun….most of them are not this difficult. After this one don’t let it hold you back from others. Love your floss tube and can’t wait to read one of your books!
Beth, I appreciate your feedback SO much and have already gone over to the website and ordered the PDF as you advised. I'm looking at it now and it's much better! The grid on this one is different so I'm going to wash out my original grid, but the symbols are different and easier to follow and I love that I can zoom in. Thank you for suggesting that! I was THIS close to buying the PDF last week then decided not to so your comment really inspired me to just make that jump and get a second copy and I'm just going to proceed fresh and follow this new one. Thank you and I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!
Hi Joanne, for your full, the center block should also be a 10x10 with some of the second page being an overlap of the first, the exact same. Usually, in patterns, this would be a grey colour, and it allows you to line up your stitches correctly. I'm looking forward to seeing your lion, the threads look so fun.
I've been checking that out and it seems to be a single row of overlap so I've gone ahead and ordered the PDF which is making the process a lot easier to make sense of. Making some progress now and I so appreciate your kind words and encouragement!
Hi Sara, Thanks for your encouragement and kind words on the Lion project! It gives me an extra boost to dive in soon. Happy stitching and Happy Thanksgiving!
Hi Joanne. That’s a really beautiful project you’ve started. I like your gridding idea. Anything that helps keep things organized on advanced charts is great. I will look forward to your progress updates on this one.
What a fun haul, I'm also in So. Cal and we don't have any cross stitch stores, we used to but not since the 90' s I recently got back into cross stitch after taking a 25 +years break and am loving it again. I do small projects now that I turn into mini pillows for my bread bowl. Have fun creating!!
Kathy, Thank you for tuning in! How great that you are back to stitching after a hiatus. Smalls sound like just the right approach - fun and rewarding. Happy stitching!!
I ordered my first full coverage pattern off Etsy after seeing tour progress. I’ve always been nervous about starting one. It’s a beautiful Christmas piece but only has 25 colors. I do have a cross stitch shop so I was able to pick up some soft Aida . Excited to get going!
Ooh, I'm really excited for you to start your first full coverage. How fun! I've been enjoying this process and after filming this Flosstube, managed to make some progress and am having a blast. I hope you find the same! I'm also a soft Aida fan and have been hunting around for it. I found a few that I like and am curious as to what brand you've found that you like.
@@Joanne_TheStoryStitcher I found a brand at my stitching shop call Atomic Ranch Fabrics. Its very soft and reminds me of linen. They only had 20 ct. Aida and I would prefer 16 so I ordered some online from their website. Hope it comes soon because I'm anxious to start! The ladies at the shop told me to start in the middle but I see people starting full coverage on the top left side. Wonder if it makes a difference?
@@laurens4651 Ooh, I will have to check that out. It sounds lovely. I'm going to share a few pieces of soft aida in my next Flosstube and will be curious how it looks compared to your find! I think a lot of people start in the middle so I don't think you can go wrong with that! I started on the top left just thinking the sky would be easier which it wasn't exactly ;)
I got my Christmas Journey chart and started it yesterday. I started right at the top of Santa's head and only have a little of his face left to do (those quarter stitches are no joke!) and his hat and beard are done. I am loving it and thank you for the heads up about the two dotted brown symbols that are almost identical. I circled them on the color key so that I would hopefully remember to look at them closely when I get to those parts of the chart. For the light colored symbol for the dark grey, you could color those symbols on your chart with a dark sharpie and then note that on your color key. I color in on my charts a lot when I have trouble distinguishing colors from each other. I love your autumn finish and think that adding purple leaves would look beautiful. I also love the fabric and floss that you put together for your lion. It will be stunning!
I love that you are doing this one as well and please keep me posted on your progress! Smart to start at Santa's head. I bet he is turning out beautifully. I am bracing myself for those 1/4 stitches 😇 Happy stitching on Christmas Journey and I'm glad this video and my finds are helpful to you as well!
I just ordered a copy 🤦🏼♀️Couldn’t help myself. I used pre gridded fabric but this is a mystery! Can’t wait for the chart to come so we can commiserate
Secondly, re: Journey, I am positive that the 16 stitches include six overlapping stitches. I think if you look at them, I believe that you will see repeated stitches. I admire your ambition. I know from experience that Leisure Arts charts are not for the faint of heart. Additionally, because this chart is quite old, I am certain that DMC has changed the colors of those gray threads. I would look for replacement colors by matching new choices to the picture as best you can. Hope this helped and I just subscribed. Love, a fan
Really good advice! I've stitched 50+ years. I have some original dye lots and came across the grey the other day. Big difference in color, so I pulled out of my rotation. During the pandemic, I completed my DMC collection. Most are in projects. There are good resources online that list the discontinued colors. I made a list of those so I know when and what to substitute.
I would totally do a trade with you!! I have made several of my project bags and several different kinds (project bag, folder, vinyl front etc.). I love all your stitches and cannot wait to see your lion! What an amazing idea!

Deborah - Thanks for the tips! I'll be double checking the pattern this week with everyone's great advice in mind!! And great idea. I had just started a tiny Christmas small (and an easy one!) when I read your comment so it helped me know that yes, that's okay to work in some smalls and break up the hard ones :) Happy stitching!
OK, now it is time to incorporate stitching into a new novel - what do you think? I'm pretty sure stitching was a necessity throughout the past and you could make it relevant. Purple leaves a yes and I am thankful for so much today. hugs
Kathie! So fun that you said that as it's one of the reasons I started on this journey. I just finished a novel (releasing 2025) where the heroine is working on a sampler. This has definitely been teaching me more about that! I so appreciate your warm words and kind comment. Happy Thanksgiving!
Adding the purple leaves would be very effective. On the Santa Journey, look on the cover sheet to find the total width stitch count, to determine the number of overlap stitches in the middle page break area.
I love your sweet video and you are so precious … I would add some purple leaves by the pumpkin … I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day and until next time Happy Stitching 🧵 … 😊❤ Dena
Hi there. Watching your video and had to jump in. First, I would not frog the blouse on Pumpkins. After 35+ years of stitching I have found that sometimes when you frog something you end up messing up other stitches and have to frog a lot more than you would have otherwise. I think your use of the purple is genius. Call it creative license.
Re your Santa piece. I’ve just had a look at some of my earlier Leisure Arts magazines and you are correct in that the overlap doesn’t line up as far as the grid lines at the 10s. What I do is photocopy the pattern and stick it together wagered the overlap is and then you can see if it looks correct. Sadly I think you are going to have to re grid. Todays full coverage pieces are much easier to follow. You are doing great at interpreting and adapting those older designs.
Hooray! This makes me feel so much better that I'm not crazy. ;) Great idea to photocopy and tape the chart together. I will do that and it should solve the chart issue once and for all and if I want to keep the grid lines, I can do those with the new arrangement in mind. Thank you!
I would check both sides of your chart on that page break. Newer charts gray out the overlap and usually only overlap on one side. Older chart overlap on both sides and dont gray out the overlap. I have a few charts that overlap but are not grayed out. For instance, one side of the break has 3 rows from the other side of the break, and the other side similarly has rows from the previous side. So that 16 rows could just be 10 rows with overlap on both sides of the break. A lot of older charts did that. If you want, I could PM you and help you figure it out. You are doing such a great job. If anyone laughs at your gridding, they're just mean. It's your stitching and you do what helps you. There are no rules in cross stitch. I think your lion will look amazing. I can't wait to see your progress. I would love to make a project bag. I can sew but haven't made a project bag yet. I've collected fabric to make a couple but just haven't found the motivation to pull out the sewing machine. If you can't find anyone who wants to trade, I'm willing to give it a go.
Thank you so much for the tips! I'm going to take another look through the chart with this in mind. My mom is coming over for Thanksgiving so she's planning to help me look at it and I really appreciate your offer! If I can't sort it out, I know that would be a big help. Thanks for your encouragement and kind words! I might have found someone who can make the project bag so I just really appreciate everyone's kindness here on Flosstube, including yours.
Hi. I say leaves. I like her green shirt. Also are the 16 stitches meant to be overlapping? Just a thought. I love your videos. First one I found when I started cross stitching about the same time you did and I feel like we are sharing the journey. I have jumped down the rabbit hole too. Happy thanksgiving.
Thank you for voting and sharing your tips and ideas. I really appreciate it and am so glad you're learning cross stitch the same time I am. It's so much fun!
I have pondered and pondered your 16 grid chart problem and keeping existing work.... maybe add another tic mark in a different color? Probably not even a whole line is necessary because you have the awareness, just a small mark? I'm stumped.
Lots of time when a chart goes over pages there is a repeat. It's hard to tell without seeing the whole chart but is it possible there is a repeat. It might say something in the directions of the pattern. I tried to look at some of my old patterns to see but I couldn't find any that don't have a 10 x 10 grid. Hope someone has your exact pattern and can help.
I appreciate that, Bette. I hope so too and I am grateful for your input! I do see one row of repeat and the others don't seem to be. I could also reach out to Leisure Arts if necessary! Happy stitching to you. 🍂
That’s a lot of hand charting. I do not have any answers or tips for you, sorry. I look forward to hear how to take care of it. I hear the bells on …..😂😂 Thank you Email sent
I agree. I see one row of overlap - which is lightened in color, but I can't seem to find any other overlap. The section includes Santa's hand and sleeve and it's all accounted for so I am puzzled. Thank you for sharing and I'm going to give it some more study with this in mind!
Hi Kim, Thank you so much! I have one other viewer who has kindly offered but I have not yet heard back yet, so feel free to email me at your convenience joannedewittbooks@gmail.com and we can chat!

I appreciate you giving it thought! That's not a bad idea, to add a fresh reference to a grid on top. :) Thanks!
Sometimes patterns are the same on both sides?! Not sure that makes sense. In the center you may possibly overlap?!
Nancy, That's what I'm going to keep an eye out for - Thanks! :)
I hear the bells on …..😂😂
Thank you

Char, So glad you saw that you're the winner and thanks for emailing me! I'm looking forward to sending out the pattern this week. 😊
I am 99% sure that the 16 squares include an overlap. Look for the stitch patterns repeating in that area.
I agree. I see one row of overlap - which is lightened in color, but I can't seem to find any other overlap. The section includes Santa's hand and sleeve and it's all accounted for so I am puzzled. Thank you for sharing and I'm going to give it some more study with this in mind!
Purple leaves and leave blouse alone.
Will do!
That full coverage piece would have been in time out, forever!! Way too much brain power, but good for you continuing on, good luck🙋
LOL, Susan that makes me feel better! I was wondering if it just looked hard to me. 😉Thanks for sharing and for the warm wishes!
I would love to make you a project bag in trade for 2 books. Let me know if your interested. Do you want to choose the fabric? Happy Thanksgiving!!
Hi Kim, Thank you so much! I have one other viewer who has kindly offered but I have not yet heard back yet, so feel free to email me at your convenience joannedewittbooks@gmail.com and we can chat!
Add some purple leaves. Please don’t take any stitches out.
Will do! Thank you!
