I’ve been wanting to get a hold of @razorEmporium to have the specs checked out on mine and possibly to get it refinished. I do like the fact that it’s 60 years old and still works.
I really appreciate the zooms to the area you’re shaving. Keeps the videos more dynamic. Appreciate your production quality in general man. Really good stuff.
I only recently learned that when passing on the neck area always make sure the first 2 passes are with the grain and you'll notice whiskers on our necks grow south-to-north therefore 2 upward passes and on the 3 pass go south (against the grain). I found this really helps avoid razor burn or bumps on the neck area. Cheers! (P.S. Im shaving with a Rockwell 6S - Plate 3)
First time here. Interesting comparison video. As a collector of vintage (mostly Gillette) razors I'm automatically biased (lol), however, Rockwell makes a fantastic product. That's part of what transforms this chore into a hobby - the multitude of possible combinations, and ymmv always applies. Good content.
Hi Brother, I bought some Nivea Men Maximum Hydration Post Shave Balm.. Nice product, thanks for the suggestion. I'm loving my 6S. I still need to trial the 1, 2, and 5 plates.
What's up. Good to hear from you and I'm glad you're liking the Rockwell. I'm a little jealous you got the 6s. Which plate do you like most out of the 3 and 6?
@@OhioShaves I've tried the 3, 4, and 6 plates. Liking 4 plate a lot. 6 plate would be my one pass shave go to. Geo did me a solid. I ordered the 6S last Saturday morning and it vas shipped by that afternoon and it was in my hands on Monday. If you want a 6S Geo has them for $99.99 no shipping,( Any order more than $65 is free shipping in the U.S. ), and he may not have to charge you Ohio sales tax.
Try some Pre Shave from PAA. Its increases every shave soaps slickness and density of the lather.I Have the Fatboy, The slim, and the black beauty. It takes time and patience to get smooth bloodless shaves with these razors. Also remember everyone's beard and skin type is different.
It took me a while to get the hang of Feather blades. I keep the setting around a 3 but am now getting nick-free shaves. If I’m in a hurry, I’ll use Merkur or Derby.
Hard to justify more spending on that Fatboy with no real guarantee that it won't still leave you with nicks. Maybe sell it and try another adjustable like a Parker Variant or Merkur Progress if you're looking for variety. All that said, the 6C just seems to be the reliable option. I'm enjoying the DE learning process with mine and have no need to change yet.
The gillette adjustables and most of the twist to open razors require more handle tilt than newer razors. They have a tendency to scrape otherwise and cause razor burn and irritation. At least in my experience.
Hey, awesome shave as always! Great job! 🤝 I had such things with Gillette Super Speed. To avoid irritation and cuts - I’ve used bigger angle, that wont be such agressive. Idk why, but that works. Modern razors have a bit different geometry and I guess polishing, so fatboy need softer angle. Try to shave from upper plate without using guard plate. And thank you again for your job! 🪒
Thank you for the review, I'm wondering since you tried both fatboy and Rex Ambassador, which one do you find less aggressive and smoother between the two?
Great comparison. I was looking at a Gillette slim adjustable but I have some 6C’s & a T2 already. I also have a Gillette tech & being honest don’t love it. Not efficient as I’d like yet cuts me easier then 6c for sure. After watching this I’ll not bother with the 2nd vintage Gillette. I already have a vintage Gillette collecting dust 😂
Great video! I’ve had great luck with my Gillette Herritage. I just picked up a vintage Gillette open comb 1930’s razor. Let me say…it wasn’t so much a shave as it was a blood bath. HUGE irritations all over my neck. I worked at it for a week. No luck. I’ve just had it sitting. I’d I were to send it in to be checked, where would I send it? I heard you mentioning that a few times in this video.
i am using the Merkur Futur adjusting after beard lenght, starting at setting 3 with more than 12 hour growt and second pass setting 2, third pass i`ll go down to setting one. i use the adjustabillity to get closer shaves, redusing for every pass.
@@OhioShaves yes i mannage under the nose but it took some getting used to.My tecnique wasn`t good enough in the beginning with the Futur,i am a stroke survivor so i got nicked some before i got used to it

The vintage Gillette DE razors to me anyway are more a collectors item or show piece rather than something to use. My top two DE razors are the Henson AL13 and the Rockwell 6C. They offer the best, smoothest and most irritation free shaves with no nicks.
@@OhioShaves I generally use plate R3 or R4. Below the jawline is a problem area for just about everyone I know. One of the main reasons is whiskers have a tendency to grow is so many different directions on the neck. I've had some success in beard mapping. There are a lot of great videos on YT but something I've always kept in mind is YMMV. One razor or blade or shaving cream might work for one guy and not so well for another. Much of it is trial and error. Everyone's facial skin and beard growth is different.
I have the AL13 and really like it. Was thinking about getting a 6C as well and then I could use more aggressive plates as I get more experience. How would you compare the two razors?
Hello, I posted this on your Merkur 34c & Gillette Nacet videos also, but I’ll put it on your most current one here too. You stated in one of those videos you were having trouble working up a thick lather. Try this, get some distilled water, heat it to the temp you like, then use that to make your lather. Soapmakers know this, but most people don’t, hard water/water full of minerals will not make a good lather. Worth a shot anyway, only costs around $1/gallon. Geofatboy just did a video on this, so I’m guessing a soap maker got a hold of him too. Good luck & happy shaves to you sir!
I have been contemplating a water system in my house. I do pay for city water and since my last move the water is a little more hard here per say. My neighbors have all been upgrading to some sort of water treatment. Aqua is not doing a very good job in my area. Used to be way better. I say this because when your water is soft it feels like you can never get the soap off your body when you shower. Your skin is just silky smooth. At least that's what I've noticed.
@@OhioShaves, I can tell you this, when diluting my liquid soap, the difference in ease of lather between drinking water (calcium fortified) & distilled water(no minerals) is huge! Since I switched to distilled my soap is more efficient, I use less of it, and making a lather takes no time whatsoever. The concept of shaving soap is exactly the same, you’re making a diluted soap, so it may just work.
@@OhioShaves, When I finally release my shaving soap, I’ll put that tip right on the container, I don’t know why other soap-makers don’t do this, but they should.
@@OhioShaves A FRIEND ALSO HAS THE SAME PROBLEM. NEVER ADJUST WHILE THE BUTTERFLY GATES ARE CLOSED. ONLY ADJUST THE LEVEL WHEN THEY ARE OPEN. THERE IS THE CARE.
Honestly, your shaving style for me is frustrating to watch. Please follow a three pass shave, with the growth 9-7, across the growth 6-4, against the growth 3-1, with long straight full length strokes. Stop with the small 15mm repetitive passes over the same area, you have a surgical sharp blade 40mm wide against your skin, a single pass each time will suffice. 😂 excuse the rant and learn from my wisdom words. Apologies. i do also appreciate your videos👍
