'Return to a bygone era': Sharri Markson slams PM's right to disconnect policy

  • Sky News host Sharri Markson slams Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's right to disconnect laws, which come into effect today, and states employees do not need to answer work correspondents outside work hours.
"The Prime Minister today celebrated new right to disconnect laws which ban bosses from contacting staff after hours," Ms Markson said.
"Anthony Albanese claimed these laws would give people more time with their family when, in fact, they mark a dark return to a bygone era of nine-to-five office hours.
"The Coalition and business council say these new laws are unnecessary and are a major productivity drain at a time when slow productivity growth is a factor in inflation remaining high.
"It's absurd government regulation in the business sector.
"The prime minister's rules are a return to a bygone era.
"They are a handbrake on the flexible working arrangements that all major companies globally are moving toward."

This IR reform is a distraction. More important things to sort out first. Corporates and Government don't want the real problems to be headline news. Inflation! Inflation impacts to Regional and Cities would best be served by addressing the core root cause of inflation and the regional and city cost of living crisis. This would be a great opportunity to bring front and centre and explain to all Australians, and yes the Regional folk, as to why we don't have a sovereign fund similar to the US for example in Alaska where the people who own the resources, get paid a dividend annually and or it goes into a sovereign regional and national development fund? Need to vote these politician people out that deliberately avoid or stall or delay any reform or transparency on this. Terrible damage being done with our Australian tax payers subsidizing corporates and getting basically a tiny trickle in return if that. Need Coalition both state and federal to first fix the cost of living crisis that deniers like the Labor and Teals parties will not address. Caused by Corporate Profitering driving up our inflation. Start with the energy lobby groups and energy companies and many others taking our gas and other resources alledgegly for free and allegedly not paying royalties or taxes. We the Australian people own these resources. Why do we get tiny trickle feed profits of alledgedly small smoke and mirrors payments to look like we are getting something from some companies? Compared to Qatar for example, we export more natural gas but our royalties and taxes are way way smaller? Why?

Cost of living, the cost of housing, traffic congestion, higher interest rates are more of a mental health issue than a few emails or phone calls.
The sheer pressure of surviving while this government continues to run immigration at record levels driving demand and congestion is the problem.
    Vote Labor out.

So that means my boss can’t call me to do an extra shift day so I could have an extra days pay to go towards my never ending bills thanks to the labour government. Or what about letting me know that I am not needed to come to work until 10am (being a casual), so get up early and get the bus/train to go to work for 8 am start and then wait around for two hours when I could have spent that time at home with my kids and take them to school myself which is safer. The labour governments ideas are causing mental health issues.

Seeing it was casual work this is absolutely garbage. It would simply be if you didn't want to work you could say no. But someone who was not prepared to accept a phone call for me in an emergency wouldn't work for me. My people were excellent and I was available to them in an emergency. I would advance money etc. Not always getting paid back but but remember it is quid pro quo. you help me I help you

Part of the issues that the legislation also protects the workers who do want to have a break in their work hours or are on a “non working” day caring for their children. This protects the right not to answer continuous calls and emails on those days. Knocking off after work also means being able to cook dinner or bath the kids without being worried you’ll miss something that could get you sacked.
We aren’t talking about the odd call. We’re talking about being expected or pressured to functionally work at those times. Given awards have needed to put in clauses related to not being able to be disciplined or performance managed for not responding outside of agreed working hours (unless formally on call) or on annual leave days etc there has evidently been issues.
I can confirm that my 8-9 Hr day was functionally extended due to site teams starting at 6am but the boss still calling at 6pm asking for administrative things that really could wait until the next day but he called then just because it was convenient for him. I had site responsibilities so would answer incase there had been something requiring call out not to essentially log back on to answer a question that he wouldn’t even action until late the following day…. And I wasn’t alone with this in my workplace.
Email signatures noting that emails are sent out of hours for the senders convenience and don’t required response have helped but don’t protect from management who call or email repeatedly. Just the existence of the oing of notifications can pull you back to work mode subconsciously. Turning them off can currently have you in strife for non action.
I had a friend who was not in an on call role and got pulled into a please explain meeting after she had gone out for a half hour lunch and not immediately responded to an email. She didn’t even have a work phone ( nor expectations that she use a byod set up) - she was in comms role who just created information for marketing campaigns.
We have proven that a large portion of employers (and some employees) haven’t been able to manage the change in technology providing near constant access for work and personal time responsibly and this acts to address the issues.
I don’t think it prevents you negotiating flexible hours to manage other life commitments… it just stops you imposing your choice of extended hours on others, and also protects the times you’ve agreed to be clocked off inside to whatever level of contact/availability that was agreed.

    • @robertparry4929
      @robertparry4929 15 днів тому

It actually improves flexibility not hinders it. It improves family time which is something conservatives love pushing most of the time. It will grow the economy as people can have more time to go and socialise if they so wish to. Pubs, restaurants, sports, cinemas etc would love that extra business.
Also it applies reasonable contact. If a roster at work changes, that is deemed reasonable.
We are getting back our Australian life and culture with such a law.
