Chuck the seeds on the ground and nature does the rest. My garden has loooads of them and I have ONLY ever cast them directly on to the mud and left them to it. Over 6 feet tall last year. You reeally don't need to do all this. It may be fun though.
I wish it was that easy for me.. we have cats squirrels and deer that keep the leaves and dirt kicked up, which chokes them out as tiny little seedlings. I've been trying for months to get them to sprout out of the ground, I can only get them using this method and transplanting them when larger

Just a reminder, foxgloves are a Bi-annual meaning they only flower in the second year, they have lovely green fury leaves, so still a pleasure to look at.
@@melanie4now it grows in year one flowers in year 2, but they seed themselves so you will continue to have flowers for years to come, if you allow them to seed themselves and not be tempted to cut the flowers. either way they are awesome to grow i have just planted a whole heep.

Like coleus and strawberry seeds Lol. It took me three tries to germinate those coleus because of various reasons. I even lost track of where I put them in a whole tray 🤦🏻♀️ but today I have baby seedlings. And my strawberries are germinating too surprisingly. I didn’t know about stratification but I managed to get it done LOL! It’s been a rough start. So now I’m ready for these foxgloves!👊🏼😂

When my foxglove went to seed I just took them and shook them all around the part of the garden I wanted to have them grow (In fall) The ground is absolutely horrid in this area, clay and clumpy. This spring I have literally 100"s of seedlings. I am in process of digging them up and potting them up because it's too early to transplant them back into the ground. They are in my greenhouse. Easiest plant I ever grew. I can't take credit, Mother Nature is amazing.

Yes, that's the idea. A Biennial plant lives for only 2 years - total. After that it dies. Biennial breaks down like this: bi = two Annual = yearly So the word biennial translates to a 2 year plant. Here's the long answer if you're really wondering all the info that wasn't in the video: Foxgloves spend the 1st year growing a good root system, along with some leaf growth on top of the soil too. They can be started either in the Spring, or in the Fall of that first year. Either way, the result is the same, the plant is simply waiting for its seasonal cues to go through its own process. It will not flower until year #2. Basically, it's waiting for Winter, THAT'S the big cue. During that 1st Winter they go thru, the leaves on top of the soil will die back, but the roots underground are still alive. If you live in a temperate zone, the leaves might not die back. But that's ok, bcuz the plant senses the outdoor temperatures, and knows it's Winter. The following Spring, the Foxglove begins it's 2nd, and last year. It's whole purpose is to make new seed to carry on the species. So it sends up it's tall, glorious flowers that we all love so much!! The bigger the root system, the more flower stalks it will send up! If you want to cut the flowers for a vase, you will not get to have any seed from that particular flower stalk. If you want to have BOTH cut flowers AND seeds, make sure to leave at least ONE flower stalk on the plant, even if it doesn't look so pretty anymore! Let it stay on the plant to make seeds. Each little flower bell on that stalk will dry up, and fall off. Which is what you want. As Summer comes, the tall flower stalks will start to dry out, and the many seed pods will be more visible near where each bell shaped flower was. Soon, those dry seed pods will crack open, and the seeds start to fall to the ground. What most of us do at this stage is gently cut the now SEED STALK, and then carry that stalk over to the other places in our gardens where we want more foxgloves to grow the next year. Carry it gently bcuz most likely there will be seeds falling out very easily! Take it to the spot you want more foxgloves, and give that seed stalk a gentle shake over that particular area. The seeds are now "planted". Or - You can simply cut the dry stalk off the plant, and put it right into a paper bag to save the seeds (do not save seeds in plastic bags). Then later you can strip the seeds off the stalk, and discard the dry plant matter, and save the seeds. Those seeds that fell on the ground will usually stay dormant until the Autumn of that same year. When the seeds feel those Autumn temps getting cooler, and they have some rain, they will start to germinate, and grow. After the all seeds have matured on the Foxglove plant, the whole plant starts to die off, roots and all. It will not flower again. You can now dig up that whole plant bcuz it is nearing the end of its life, it won't be pretty again. Or - You can wait until the plant dies back on it's own. The leaves will start to turn yellow, then dry to brown. At that point it's 100% completely done growing. Now it can be removed from the garden. If you do the seed scattering every year, then you'll end up having Foxgloves every year, even though it's a Biennial plant. And you won't have to wait 2 years for flowers anymore!. There is one variety of foxgloves - "The Camelot" series - that do flower their first year. My daughter grew them last year. They did flower the first year, but they were very, very short flower stalks! The 2nd year they grew tall like they're supposed to. And that's the whole 2 year Foxglove story.

I loved your video! I am in my first year of growing the biennial variety from seed and they have gorgeous foliage. I live in zone 7 and would like to know how to keep these alive through the winter so I can see their blooms next year. I have them outside in pots right now. Any advise would be so appreciated.
Just want to ask if there are problems with foxgloves and the danger of the digitalis contained in them? I want to grow them as they are beautiful but not enough to have a heart attack from the digitalis. if you could address that it would be helpful to myself and others.
Like many useful substances found in nature, dosage can mean the difference between life and death. In the case of digitalin, the dosage has to be very precise in order to have a healing effect.
@@stefandewet1021 not true a few seeds can harm you if eaten. People with heart problems can benefit but people without concern heart problems will die. It's best to always wash your hand after handling any plant there are more deaths a year from a privet hegde than fox gloves. People seem to worry about fox gloves when many plant if eaten are deadly.

Since these are bi-annuals can you grow and plant two conservative years so they can self germinate and flower every year?

You can use sand instead of eggshells, it's the same effect.
