Many times we hear of perfect casting, when describing a actor/actress and their performance. Elizabeth Tabish's portrayal of Mary Magdalene certainly fits the definition of perfect casting. She really makes you feel for the character. Sometimes it is hard to see past the beauty of an actress unless they truly can infuse their character with so much pathos that you look past the superficial. Tabish does just that. She really conveys the years of pain when afflicted with sin, the continuous struggle to overcome sin, and the tragedy of relapsing back into sinful behavior. The woman deserves an Emmy for her performance.

Mary is one of my characters in the show. I always considered her to be disciple #0 because even though she wasn’t one of the original 12, Jesus trusted her as much as He did them. And even though her relapse didn’t actually happen in the Bible, it doesn’t make reference to the Book of Hebrews and other verses that address the importance of repentance when falling back into sin. Even the best of us still lose our way. Jesus was the only perfect human.

When Jesus tells Mary that He just wants her heart, He is telling her that she needn’t return to her old ways just because she has not become perfect-and that redemption doesn’t mean that you suddenly become a perfect person. Rather, it means that you are walking on a different road now than the road you were on in the past, and that there is something meaningful at the end of this particular road-something that is joyful, rather than just sad, empty or dead. A good example would be that scene in the first season, when Mary was possessed by demons and Nicodemus was trying to exorcise her, and she suddenly looked up and said, “You have no power here…Teacher.” (That scene actually raised the hair on the back of my neck and not in a good way, either 😳) The point is that the road Mary was on in the past led nowhere, but her new road consisted of an entirely different journey (yet it was still a journey and, therefore, she should not expect immediate perfection from herself). This entire series is very, very powerful and, in my opinion, has the potential to change the entire direction of this country (and beyond) for the better. (And I don’t think that it’s an accident that it has only been released fairly recently.)
