Thanks for sharing your attempts and letting us learn from them! I am looking to strip and paint my Mk2 GTI in the next couple of months, but right now I am still finishing the rust repairs. I am about 3-4 months behind you in my car restoration journey.
Happy to hear that your journey to fix mk2 gti continues :) Rust repairs took me around 9 months, so I hope yours car is in a better shape 😎👍🏻 If everything will go as should, both our cars will be finished during next year 🥳
Try a very light coat first to introduce the paint to the panel, then if no reactions go a bit heavier and so forth. The crazing is more a reaction to whats underneath than your panel being clean. It can be difficult to understand but if it happens again use a bar coat primer before the normal primer.

Thanks for an advice, I will try it on my next attempt :)
