Strapped in a rocket with no chutes and no brakes! So lucky as this could have ended much worse. We were testing at US 131 Dragway in Martin, Michigan with high hopes of getting everything dialed in but testing didn't go according to plan. The world's quickest street car and Drag Week winning Sick Seconds 2.0 Camaro went deep into the sand. And it was all my fault.
Thankfully I think the Steve Morris SMX doesn't have any damage but we are going to double check everything. The turbos look okay so fingers crossed. These things happen in drag racing! - Авто та транспорт
Don't let LS George anywhere near that red Fiero 😂😂😂
Reminds me of when george forgot to put the brake pedal on, and crashed the blazer and tried to blame someone else. Yeah dont let him near anything but a scooter 😂
@@jackmorrison8269lol I remember that he went in the corn 🌽 field!
That was epic but you knew how that was gonna end
😂🇺🇸🏁
No idea what he’s talking about 🙃
Need a "Sick Happens" shirt with the car in the gravel. You stayed so calm, That's incredible.
he was shaking like hell while removing his helmet.
good shout for a shirt
more like "SAND happened"🤪
More tracks need a sand runout that long! Amazing it was able to stop your car that quick with minimal damage, glad your okay Tom!
Good thing that gravel stopped him, bc those TBM brakes weren’t 😂 Starting to see a trend with all these cars running TBMs
@@TheGreatestShowman69 They were designed for a 1200 pound sprint car... but hey... theyre light lol
Who else has had issues with TBM's? I'm surprised there's any aftermarket companies making brakes. Seem like a high liability risk!
@@TheGreatestShowman69 two cars is a trend?
@@jbohler I mean if your wife cheated on you twice with two different guys, wouldn’t you classify that as a trend?
Glad you and the car are ok Tom, but you look like your going through something besides the car. I hope you and the family are all good. Prayers to you all
Was my impression too.
He literally said as much in the video people!!!! Pay attention
@Tom The main thing is your okay and safe and the car is 99% intact.
That pea gravel sure is a vast improvement over the old ways: a stand of trees, an expressway concrete perimeter wall, a barn. I'm very impressed how little damage to what used to be great tragedy.
Yeah in the old days that car would have been destroyed for sure and Tom could have been seriously injured or killed.
Some track have nets like they have on some of them runaway lanes for trucks and if that was there it would of stop the car but the body and front end would of been totalled. National Trails in Hebron Ohio has the net right with a little patch of sand before it. If you look on google maps will will see what I mean but if Tom was there it would of not been good at all.
Glad you're OK and glad your car didn't get destroyed!
When I was a kid I went to Martin for the then Pop Rod Nationals, a top fuel car broke the rear wing and struts off including the chutes. At the time there was a dirt mound beyond the end of the track, he hit it and flew over the trees into a campground on the other side. Crazier part he was ok and returned after a hospital check. As a young boy that was a eye opener! Later in life I went on to pit crew on a top alcohol car and was tasked with the job of packing chutes, no doubt I did a lot of double checking them😂
As a driver, they love doing their own shutes as it is your responsibility to make sure they are packed properly.
I've heard stories about that crash before. Crazy
Was 14yrs old when learning about pre flight checklist in a Cessna 150 trainer...
Being an avid viewer/fan of many channels with beasts like Toms, it's amazing to see how often things are missed/forgotten.
Y'all gotta do better. Period.
Thoroughly enjoy the content..and it'd be real nice that all of ya'll are around to keep it coming..
Accept this as a smidgen of tough love...
I came here to comment something very similar. Use a simple checklist for critical items and use it every run
I swear to God, I read that and thought it said bReast like Tom's 😂😂😂😂 .. definitely had to read it twice
Even I do basic checks on my motorcycle before going out on it every single day, it's a mental checklist I admit, but it's still better than what 99% of others do.
@@Gobbbbb 👍
@@GrumpysGarageDave 🤣🤣🤣
Wow that sand trap was amazing! Did its job perfectly! Bravo!!! Glad you are okay Tom!
I'm just another Joe commenting here but if avoiding potentially serious injury depends on you not forgetting things, it may be time to introduce "checklists", much like flight pilots do for example.
At those speeds, That’s not a bad idea.
Yep and with cars this fast the first test pass should be to half track at most especially if the car has not been ran in a while.
@@cherb23 Yeah that was my thought. Being the cars first pass of the year should've been half track
@@wheeln24-79 this reminds me of the run Cleetus did in 1.0 where the chutes didn't deploy due to being packed for so long, definitely helps to verify everything, at least this time was user error...
He could put an interlock so the trans break will not work with out them armed
All things considered, you had the best possible outcome!
Thankful that you're okay Tom, that the Sand Trap is so long and effective at Martin and that the car fared so well.
An old friend used to say "It ain't broke until you can't fix it". Move on and have a great season!!
that pea gravel certainly does the trick for a safe soft landing, Tom so glad to see you safe and all is good.
The chute may have failed but thank god the horse shoe works just fine.
No kidding! I hope all tracks that let TBM equipped cars on their property have these shutdown safety features. Starting to become a trend for TBM.
@@TheGreatestShowman69two cars is not a trend bud
Failed? Hate to spoil the news for you, this was Tom and his crew failing. Car has sat, they did not flush the system. Most racing fluids last for 6-12 months at best. The only one which is different is the SRF.
Then not doing a short hit. Not smart.
And lastly, not arming the chutes. That's just next level complacency.
We all make mistakes, hope Tom and his guys learn from this.
@@theunhingedgamer3762 So if your gf sleeps with two different guys behind your back, you wouldn’t call that a trend? Simp
@@AB-80X Honestly bro...That's pretty low and so disingenuously immature of you to reiterate what Tom already pointed out. Anyone with a modicum of sense who watched the same video as you knows exactly what happened.., so your after-the-fact prognosis is not news to anyone and totally unwarranted. You clearly missed your mark on this one.
The sole message to be taken from this incident is clearly a shared learning experience.
Here's a tidbit of news for you...
Tom didn't post this video just so it could be used by you for the purposes as a cudgel for a public brow beating and a paltry offering of .,, your two cents worth of hope .
That was the calmest going-off-the-track reaction I have ever seen. You are cool as a stone, my man. I am too used to people in my age group screaming, jumping, going "bro no way!" and throwing a fit, sometimes even throwing things! It's nice to see someone with a stoic and logical reaction to it. A very "what's done is done. Making a scene won't fix it. Press on" kind of attitude.
So glad you’re all right Tom that was some scary stuff. She slid on that gravel like a lakester thank God. sending prayers for whatever else is going on. Hope the family’s OK.
Thank goodness that sand trap is so long.. most other big tracks you would've hit the net and tore the front end all up. Glad you're ok! 💪
Sorry, I didn't know you were gonna say the exact same thing, at the end of the video. 😅 I commented mid video.
That's actually not a track with a huge shut-down. Had this been an actual "big" track, he would not have hit the gravel. But yes, at an even smaller track, it would have been a problem.
@@AB-80X I said sand trap, not shut down....
Ohhhhh man Tom, what a lucky day to be at a good track with a decent emergency runoff. That gravel worked a charm at slowing things down. I was so worried you ended up in the wall or totaling the car. Count your lucky stars this didn't happen at a track with a short runoff or one without gravel that runs into tree's. I know this sucks but it could have been so much worse.
Dude glade you are ok and sorry that this happened to you but hey if its not the hard way it ain't are way. Now that you got that out of the way let's rock it now.
Just glad you came through ok, and the car not being hurt too much is a nice bonus. Sorry to hear you're going through some other non racing issues, best wishes to you and your family.
Whatever's going on man I hope everything is all right, I'm glad you in the car are good!!It seems like something had you down in the dumps there at the end...
WHAT A SAVE! Great driving and glad you’re okay brother!
So glad you are ok , as well as the car! It could have been way worse. Please keep us updated. Many thanks Tom.
I'm happy you are safe. You just taught the rest of us what not to do with the Chutes and Brakes. I'm happy the car survived also. Thank god for all that length gravel!!!
Like everyone else, glad you are ok and the car isn't really hurt. Can wait to see you get it back on the track again.
Holly caw Tom thank God you at the right place and that gravel looked so nicely groomed and level it just seemed to glide. Hope you can return to the strip soon.
Sir! You have to be the calmest man after that save! Hats off to you Sir!
Great to see that you are ok after that excursion with sick 2.0 It shows that you have the knowledge to run one of these bad boys. The calmness you showed proves that you build them right!
Complete Professional, Absolute Skill, no panic no mistakes and a good ending to undesirable situation. You make it look easy but we all know how this can go south very fast. Good Job tom!
Absolute skill and professional. Hate to break it to you but the chances of this happening on an actual pro team, is slim to none. Good ending? Terrible if you ask me.
Not flushing brakes, not arming chutes, and not following proper procedures by not doing the test hit. Terrible ending because it was all avoidable.
Can confirm. Needs a break job. Glad everyone is safe! Can't wait to see the next run in that beast! Good luck Tom!
Just glad you're OK.🏁
Looking forward to the next run!
Glad you're ok. Chit happens and thankfully it all worked out in the end and nothing was damaged and more importantly no one got hurt. Bob can rebuild anything. :)
Amazing job staying calm and in control!
That sucks Tom
You could have a pressure sensor on the chutes and link it to your racepak/ Holley so it doesn’t let you come up on two step without it being armed
When Sam travels to Tom's shop, him and that kid must fully polish 2.0 together!!! It would be like Luke Skywalker learning how to clean a car from Yoda...

Most importantly Tom, Glad you’re OK and the Car has minimal damage. I agree with some other comments about a checklist, especially for the first few passes of the season and when you have different people helping. 131 has a nice track, Thanks to their team for quickly getting things moving again. What a sinking feeling to have low to no braking. Thank goodness you had that *run-away* vehicle pit. Sure renews the thought (for me and possibly you also), that the right things were in place for this run’s ok landing / ending.
Amazingly calm, Tom.
Great job dealing with it. Keep it goin man.
Glad to see your alright hopefully it's minimal damage to the car ,tks Tom
Im glad tour ok Tom, that would of been freaking scary. I also hope everything else is going ok, keep your head up mate.
Acknowledging one's mistakes and learning from them is the hallmark of a solid person. Glad things didn't turn out worse and I know you get the gravity of the implications of any mistakes at this level of motorsport. Brown pants moment no doubt. You're still a badass in my book ; )
Glad you’re alright and the car looks to be okay , practice makes perfect, enjoy !

Thank goodness your ok bro , you need to mark where you ended up in the gravel trap could be a record for the longest so far 😂😂😂
Thank god for good runoff brother glad to see you’re ok
Once it was obvious you were headed for the sandbox, I was real glad you were at 131... there's a lot of places you could have been that are much less forgiving to a mental error.
You've spent your good luck card, though; so, tighten it up, bud, we all would miss you.

I see the “my field of dreams is a drag strip” hoodie. I petition for a new hoodies that says “my field of nightmares is a sand pit” 😂 congrats on staying calm, that was a textbook! Keep up the good work, love watching your videos
Tom, you got time to hear about my FUs? At 70 It's a long list.
You are the man; one mistake does not make a man.
You live to race another day. Thats the most important thing.
I was trying to hear what the sound was around 22:23, and I realized it was the turbos spooking down, that’s insane, I’m glad you are ok after that ride
Hi Tom.I'm glad you and the car are okay.
Well, they say the Key to longevity is to keep learning….I think Mr.Tom learned that day..and very glad at in the end…it’s just a reminder that a routine can be one of easiest areas of failure. Because we are Human and too many times loose focus.
But we Learn 👊🇺🇸👊
Hang in there Tom..better days ahead 👍🏼
thats why the driver is the one responsible for the chutes. glad there is minimal damage! :)
Great job on the driving thank God for lots of sand glad you are ok !!!
Glad your okay Tom!
Glad to see that this did not go as bad as it could... We have lost a car out the back door at 200+ a couple times.. it can end very very badly....
What a wild ride. I’m glad you got through ok.
I’m thinking you might want to add an indicator light to say all switches are in race setting as a final check before pulling into the beams.
Best case scenario! - Glad everything is ok. Road course guys change fluid every track day. Definitely looks like low boiling point due to moisture
That really gives a good perspective on how fast that car was going. Man that trap was coming up quick!!!! Glad nothing serious happened.
You should sell little jars of “Sick Gravel” for $39
Are you alright? That's the most ridiculous thing ever.
@@AB-80XYou really are weird, man. You can't tell sarcasm and over react to everything. Get off the internet and take your meds.
@@AB-80X We are talking "tom (anything for a buck) Bailey here. They will be available with the rest of the worthless merch next week.
Can you build your brake system to handle synthetic DOT 5? The military uses it because it doesn't absorb moisture. Might be worth looking into for drag guys
Brakes red hot at 230 mph when chutes normally hit to take up for the brake fade. Not suprised at all. At this speed that is normal. Perfectly normal. The bunny hops add a lot of distance to your stops
Tom, think of a drag racer as equivalent to a pilot. Any landing you walk away from is a good landing.. you kept it straight, let the gravel trap do its job. You done good.
As a pilot and a racer, I would agree but would add this word of advice: "CHECKLIST" I use them in the plane and in the pits, a few moments with a checklist can save a life...
You do a lot for drag race and we need you to stay safe and I want to see you. You do good. Wish you spend more time on that car with doing all the necessary check off items to keep you safe
Gawd damn that has to be a scary feeling but what a nicely groomed beach, looked like a gentle stop .
Easy lead foot!! Lol😅 I’m glad everything appears to be good. Looks like a lot of sand. Glad you’re ok
Glad you are ok
I love to see that the track safety setup worked properly. US131 is super great for the shutdown area and runoff too.
Oh man. That’s heartbreaking
That gravel trap was relatively mild compared to some runoffs. They did a good prep job🫡
It definitely could have been worse for sure. Thank goodness you and the car will be ready to get on down the road soon.
With all the safety equipment, there should be an LED indicator to let you know if it is on or off.
Yep.
That literally had my heart in my mouth. I had no idea that a sand trap would be that effective- every track should have the same!
I’ll admit I’ve never used them, but I’ve always wondered about the math on these tiny TBM brakes. Sure they’re light… and great for going fast… but the entire point of brakes is to convert kinetic energy into heat. There’s simply not enough surface area/material in TBM brakes to safely and reliably stop a 200+ MPH trap speed.
Glad you’re ok
Tuff break Tom ...glad it's realtivily ok. .. Prayers for what ever is happening personally..
Thank God you're okay
Bad luck. We all make mistakes in life. Love the channel. Rex in New Zealand
Gravel over runs are the best thing tracks can install in my opinion, and ones that are long enoughto do the job!!! I have seen many that just dont seem like they would do the job but i am bery glad this one did and you walked away to race another day!! That inside view had a pucker factor of at least an 8!! Dang
Atleast cleetus wasn't behind the wheel this time 😂🎉
That was 1.0 when the chutes didn't open on Cleetus and he managed to stop it and stay out of the gravel.
@@FastSS02yeah, but went real hard on brakes... Would have been worse without both brakes and chutes

I have to admit ya did scare me on that one. It will be better next run for sure!
So sorry man! Hopefully she's not hurt at all and you can just clean up dust off and rock on!

Glad u made it unscathed, my question is what do u mean by arming the chutes? I thought u pull the handle, and then they deploy.

The main thing is that you and everybody are okay😗
Glad your safe brother!
Reminds me of the time Cleetus drove the OG car and made a pass with no chutes! Glad the car is still in one piece.
