RACE BOAT REFIT - Are our LAMINATE RACING SAILS GARBAGE?? | Ep. 39

  • Our main sail is made of laminate cloth which is popular for race boats as it keeps its shape well and doesn't stretch. However the material doesn't have a long life. Our main sail is in pretty bad shape, and we try to reinforce it with hundreds of patches.
    Unfortunately the condition of this sail is going to limit our future plans. We are on the look out for a second hand main sail from another boat, if you hear of anything, please get in touch!

    Caio! We are Timo and Jo, an Italian and English couple with countless ocean miles under our belts. We're refitting an ex Vendée Globe Open 60 race boat originally designed & built & raced by famous Hungarian sailor Nándor Fa. He competed in her in the 1992 Vendée Globe (round the world single handed race known as “the Everest of the seas”), finishing 5th, becoming the first non-frenchman to finish.
    We are currently in Fiji giving this old gladiator a new lease on life, transforming her from an ex race boat to a performance family cruiser, which we'll need to make both dog and baby proof! We’re planning to set sail again in Oct 2022, so with limited time&money we have plenty of challenges ahead to turn our dreams into reality&get back on the water!
    Subscribe to our channel&track our progress as we release videos about our journey as well as "how to" videos about anything boat related.
    Never stop to dream, never stop to sail!

    YES you NEED a new sail. Come on you big sail makers ..make it happen for these nice guys. They have saved a yacht .and now need some help.
    great to see you trying hard to get a few more miles out if the old sail. Thanks for sharing.

      Yep they definitely need new sails, but good luck finding a sail maker who will somehow donate new sails as you suggest. Do you actually have any realistic idea what is the cost of new sails for a 60' boat?? Its huge, really huge, way beyond the means of most people, you'd need a mortgage just for a basic set.

    I don't know what I love more about your channel; Watching that baby walk around, listening to Daddy or listening to Mommy's narration. I'll stick to enjoying the channel as a whole.
    Cheers!

    So very good to be seeing you! The boat looks fantastic and seeing Capitano Nemo walking, while you are repairing the sail, is wonderful.

    I just sailed on a VO65. They went aroud the world 5-6 times, and most of them used up 2-3 sets of sails. They seem to still have them...maybe you should ask them? they race, their old sails are no good for them. Team Jajo, Windwhisper, Ambersail,, Hyper, I Love Poland (those are VO70s, but similar) all had new sails. Their old sails can be used as delivery, but they had more than one. Also their class regulations say only one mainsail one the boat, so all the old ones sitting in the container.

    That's the problem with boats of this size, replacing sails and especially a mast ( god forbid you should ever have that problem!!!) is staggeringly expensive. The hulls last for a very long time but the sails have a very finite life expectancy.

    Love that Timo doesn't want to use the delivery sails until it's the absolute only last resort because it's too small and the boat will be slow and not sexy enough. Seems completely fair to me too.

    how about instead of patches here and there you do a thorough job and add a new layer - maybe on each side - to the whole sail. Or do the patches and then do a protective layer over the whole sail on each side.

    your sail is fine. I tried contact glue on my sail and realized it's delaminated so bad that it's basically a plastic bag now. I tried spraying it inside the bag but it simply doesn't work

    There is no hope for Mylar laminated sails in hot climates this includes North 3DL, Quantum, Elstrom or UK sails.
    All these types of Sails should he rolled up and removed from the boom during the time in port.

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  Рік тому

      Very true, we kept ours in air con during the refit

  • @belledetector

    You should have paid Marshall sails to do the repairs, cut the mainsail down and renewed the luff. It´s not a problem since you are not going racing. It will be a problem if your main rips in the next storm..

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately we don’t expect the sail to last long enough for this to be worth it

    good vid...! I have an old racing boat with laminate racing sails in the inventory and was wondering how to fix some issues and maintain them.

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  Рік тому +1

      Hey Eva yes unfortunately though the sad truth is that once these sails have started to delaminate, they won’t last long 😔

  • @belledetector
    @belledetector Рік тому

    I also wondered why you didn´t cut the boom during the restoration, for the same reason. Your boat is completely overpowered for it´s current purpose imo. But good luck on finding some new sails. I am sure there is something for you out there...

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  Рік тому

      If we cut the boom, the balance of the boat would be wrong, the centre of thr sail would be too far forward... we'd have to cut the mast as well! We want to continue to have a fast boat :) at the moment she sails really well upwind with this confirmation and we like it that way

    how much do the sails cost to buy new ?

    • @SailingNV
      @SailingNV  5 місяців тому +1

      It depends a lot on the material, the cheapest is Dacron and for our size is maybe around 10-15k usd. The original racing sail we were repairing in this video was laminate and they would most likely be double the price of Dacron, again depending a bit on which materials exactly are used. Laminate sails hold their shape better and are lighter but less durable.
