  • I built this safety gate from 2x4's and rebar to match a client's staircase in one afternoon! This video shows you the process I went through to size all of the parts and discusses various construction methods for a variety of tools you may have available.

    I really like the design you used. I had made a gate for my house just a little different only with 2x4s and rebar and I gave the wood a burned look it came out great. Wife wants two more now

    I like the beefyness of the wood mixed with the rebar for spindles which I have never seen used together in a gate. That should hold up well against a big dog.
    Thanks from Tim in Virginia

    Thanks for the ideas! Curious how you attached the hinges to your siding. Can you share the hardware that you used?

      I actually installed this gate inside, but if I was going to attach it to vinyl it'd add some blocking that was scribed to the siding's profile. Here's a link to a similar hinge 👍🏻👍🏻

    Amazing video Mike! If you were to set something up like this for outside would you put the same product on the rebar or more of a paint?

    • @WoodshopMike
      @WoodshopMike  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! I'd be comfortable using the same product on the rebar, but I would definitely consider adding some clear silicon caulk to the bottom holes that the rebar slides into. I know it's a pretty snug fit, but that caulk will keep water from collecting in the bottom of the hole when it rains. An alternative to caulking would be to drill a smaller weep hole in the bottom of each hole that the rebar goes into.

    I like the looks of this gate Mike. I'm trying to decide on a design for a gate to replace an old outdated child gate that has always been used for dogs, and this may be the one. Since I have two dogs with small heads, I would make my gate with no more than 2" on-center spacing of the bars.
    Hopefully the 4" on-center spacing of the bars in the gate you built makes it impossible for their dog to get its head stuck between them.

      @WoodshopMike  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you, I'm glad you like the gate! My client has German Shepherds so no worries about dog heads getting stuck 😃. This spacing also matched the stairs (which in hindsight I should have mentioned in the video). Happy building! 👍🏻👍🏻

      You replied before I could edit my post. After reading it, I thought I might have come across as condescending or critical. That was not my intention because I've been a subscriber of yours for a while and I know that you plan and think things through thoroughly before you start any project.

      I didn't take it that way at all, no worries! Thanks for taking the time to always comment and watch, it's greatly appreciated 😃

    Great job Mike! How deep did you go into the 2” x 4” board with the rebar? I’m just wondering if I can get away with only going an 1.25” into the 4” x 4”s. I’m going to do the rebar vertical.

      @@WoodshopMike yes because I also have a customer who has a large German Shepard that keeps destroying gates and that’s how I came about your video. I was thinking 1 inch also but wanted to ask

    Like the project but if I had a dog large enough to destroy regular pet gates I would stick the dog outside or at someone else’s house lol.

    You do some nice work. But after watching a few of your vids, I'm haven't noticed much in the way of "How to". Mostly just "Watch me". Just my 2 cents.

      Thanks for watching and I appreciate the complements! Yeah, I can see how it's a bit of a "Watch Me Work" style. Tying to keep it informative without being too slow. Take care!

    Not trying to be a prick or anything but…
    Instead of the little cutaways to you explaining what you are doing, try a voice over. This way you are not interrupting the flow of the video. Use the cutaways for big stuff. Major screwups or design changes.
    As of right now I wouldn’t sub but with minor changes I may.
    Have a great day.
