This is the first bad religion song I ever heard and I was immediately hooked. That was 22 years ago and it's still my favorite song by them and they are my favorite band of all time
Same. Seen them live a few times. They're amazing. Favorite show was when they played with Death By Stereo at La Fiesta Ballroom in Bakersfield, California. I really wish that venue was still open. It's small and intimate but can handle a few bands rocking your face off. I love it!

Hes not talking about actually conquering the world. This song is about how the catholic church tried to conquer the world 2000 years ago. And it worked. This song is a rebellion to their cause.
In my opinion, he talking about how insane it is to think that that one person can rule the world. And he is listing a bunch of other types of people because he thinks that just one of these mindsets would not be fit to rule the whole world. A bleeding heart is easily temped. You can't improve the whole world by just looking at the data. a diplomat would leave many things for more of other things. This is just MY opinion though.
I'd say you both can be right. This song is a lot like The Answer where it can be interpreted many ways. Everyone thinks they would be the best ruler, the most benevolent tyrant. They would never abuse their power the way everyone else does. I got it all figured out.
One of the best devices for conveying a message is to provide examples even if it is saying it's your intent altho you don't actually intend it. It gives you as well as your audience a chance to process the repercussions of said stance, it allows one to asses the many possible outcomes. To conquer one must defeat, the lesson one should naturally arrive at would be to collectively proceed. Wild to think

Aloha Rose wow ur wish came tru! could u do me a favor? please wish for my psycho girlfriend to stop being a total passive aggressive bitch. it would make my life a little more happy.
I feel like the lines "Is your fecundity a trammel or a treasure?" and "can you improve this place with the data that you gather" did not age well, unless you consider them actual questions and not sarcastic rhetorical questions. Hey, it's from 1989. Still love the song and the band.
I think they’re still every bit as relevant. There are contemporary men and women of science who go against the “do no harm” ethos of the sciences, whether wittingly or unwittingly. And I believe the trammel or treasure line is an allegory for the earth becoming ostensibly overpopulated. Which, of course, this issue will only become more relevant until an extinction event takes place.
