The Tosa Inu is a rare dog breed which was bred in Tosa, Japan to be "a fighting dog." They are known as "the Sumo Wrestler of the Canine World" because they were taught not to bite and only wrestle during ceremonies. They are a considered a National Treasure in Japan. They are known for being courageous, intelligent, peaceful and dangerous. They show an extraordinary liking of children and will not bite them out of fear of hurting them (tosainu-samarino dot com, 2018).
They come from a primitive Japanese Wolfdog (called the Shikoku). In the 19th century, many Westerners brought different breeds into Japan and they pitted Western bred dogs against the Shikokus and they lost because they were far smaller than the Western dogs. This was seen as a affront to the Samurai pride, so in order to redress it, they decided to develop a larger, stronger breed by mixing the Japanese Wolfdog with Old English Bulldogs, Mastiffs, St. Bernards, German Pointers, Great Danes and Bull Terriers. The result was the Tosa Inu. They started easily defeating their opponents and became known in Japan for being silent, ferocious, and unyielding (Dog Appy dot com, 2018).
They are highly regulated by the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and Trinidad and Tobago. Their are banned in Australia, the Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Denmark, Fiji, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel,
Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Turkey and Tunisia (Wikipedia, 2018).
The owner said he has health complications that are most likely due to overbreeding. For example, he has hip dysplasia, a tumor and he is only 100 pounds, but his father was 180 pounds. She thinks the mother was bred continuously, without pause, in order to yield maximum income from the dogs.
