Just left the shop in Glendale. I have to say, Paul, Michelle and Randall and Landon are the salt of the earth. They stopped filming, and though they didn't need to, we had a fine 20 minute chat. They're exactly like they seem on video.

Paul's kind of like a Stone Sculptor who sees this big boulder that everyone else sees as, What it is - a rock, yet the sculptor sees the masterpiece he wants to carve out, just has a bunch of stone he needs to chip away to reveal it. His personal Roll-back!

I got a 46' 1/2 ton, all stock, when I was 16, I traded a go-kart engine for it. I drove that truck for 15 years, used it for getting fire wood, hauled everything under the sun, it would go places I should not have been. In the summer I would take the doors off and go off roading, not like you do but we had a lot of fun. That truck should be a great build and what a looker.

Paul, this is going to be an exciting build to watch. Thanks for bringing us along your epic journey. You mentioned that it was an Isuzu, but looking at that UD 1800 badge on the cab indicates that it is a United Diesel, Nissans truck division. No biggie since you’re only using the rollback half, but just in case you “part out” the front half. Eagerly looking forward to each chapter of your build. Cheers from Tokyo.

That's a VERY rare flatbed. It's a Vulcan 818 dual tilt bed. I drove one back in the Early 90s for several years on a UD chassis.
Vulcans idea was to have the bed tilt both up & down. It can be driven with the bed locked in 2 positions. With one vehicle, you set the bed flat, like a regular flatbed. When you wanna tow two vehicles... you tilt the ass end of the bed up all the way ( front goes down further than it looks in the video) then turn the mechanical bed lock clockwise to set the rear support feet on the frame. Then lower the deck onto those legs. This makes the back of the bed up high.. so the vehicle on the wheel lift could be sucked in closer to the rear axle for better steer axle weight & shorter turning. This bed requires more caution when loaded than a regular flatbed...#1... when towing 2up.. the vehicle tucks UNDER The end of the bed.. so you hafta be mindful to leave enough clearance so the hood doesn't bounce up & hit the bed & dent the hood/ lights e.t.c. going over road terrain you again need to remember the Three fulcrum pivot points, the flatbed rear axle & the Wheellift T bar and the towed vehicle rear axle.. they all move up & down & changes the angle the wheel lift vehicle rides over curbs, bumps & hills.. it's easy to damage a hood if you aren't paying attention. ALWAYS use that mechanical bed lock & tilt the bed so it has down pressure otherwise it can spring outward & the bed will be loose & bounce & send shock load to the hydraulic cylinders. You also need to be sure to secure all 4 corners of the vehicle. Even though it's required by law, many drivers do cut corners.... on a traditional bed.. it's not a big deal.. on this Vulcan 818... you NEED to chain or strap all 4 corners. When the bed it tilted.. due to weight transfer..especially in winter or when it rains when the bed might be slippery. it keeps the vehicle from wiggling sideways or breaking free & rolling downhill into the tool box or headache rack or into the cab. Remember, rear securement keeps it from going forward killing the driver, rear securement keeps it from rolling off the bed.... The wheel lift also had unique L arms called "scoops" . They were originally designed to be the first & only L arm that didn't need safety straps to keep the vehicle from rolling/pulling out if the wheel lift. Slide the scoop in, drop the arm on a pin to lock it ( there's adjustment holes in the bottom of the L arms) then drop the locking pin in the top & roll.... however.. since the 1990's some states later required that design to still find a way to add a safety strap, despite its specifically designed arms. The other downside to this bed.. they're SHORT... I think they're only like 17 feet.. so you're limited what will fit in the bed. It's Quirky, but once you get used to it, it's not too bad... if you just tow one vehicle at a time..run the bed flat like a regular flatbed & it'll be same as normal.. just remember to always set the bed down on that rear stabilizer feet.. regular beds don't have that..so remember.
Sorry this is so long.. but there's very few tow operators that have ever even heard of this rare bed.. let alone been towing well over 30 years to have used one personally. It's not even listed as existing on Vulcans own website. Hope this info helps....

Great build idea love old metal ,, like the rollback haul ,, helped a buddy out years ago hauled a few cars .. I hauled 1 on a tow dolly ,, drove it around the auction yard drove good ,, went to load it brakes went out over drove the tow dolly ,, they brought over the loader and fixed the problem ,, my buddy gave me hell for over driving the dolly .. well a few years later he did the same thing I gave him hell for doing it.. I think you need a few more trucks involved in the build .. then you can call it a 6 truck maybe throw some yota parts in the build ..

My dad had a 1942 and 1945 Chevy trucks 2 ton. The 42 had a newer 292 I6 4 speed. The cool part was the 2 speed rear axle was manual shift. And the turn signal was a mechanical arm on the driver side that actuated from a 3 position lever inside. I always liked the look of that vintage Chevy truck. That’s going to be a very cool truck. Lots of work basically not technical just lots of fun customization 👍

It’s always a mystery where they hide the fluid reservoirs. In high school I had a 51 Cadillac Hearse and it had a bad master cylinder so I had to add brake fluid when the brake pedal got low. The reservoir was under the cover on the floor and I could add it at a red light, always kept the cover hand tight.

Ditch the Vulcan for a 26' Jerr-Dan, trust me. The Jerr-Dan design can flex at very harsh angles that you may encounter offroad. The Vulcans are notoriously stiff and in situations where they are forced to try and flex they normally snap welds.
