There is no other way to do it since Pardot API moved to Lightning.
It's just overwhelming for Pardot marketers to fill out all those tiny pieces - Oauth, scope, Naming Credential, Auth. Provider, External credentials, principal...
if you get just one piece wrong - you are on the hook for the debug!

I had the same error - I resolved it but entering key and secret one more time in the auth. provider
