- Retirement of Dr George Howell Guest - St John's College Choir, Cambridge, July 1991 - Speeches: Robert King, John Selwyn Gummer (MP), Dr George Guest
What a great film to have on record. I have the 'Sain' recording of St John's College Choir, which is sung entirely in Welsh under the directorship of Guest, and it is beautiful.
I love the Johns sound - the substantial and 'dark' sounding bass vocals, and the potent sound of the trebles, quite unlike other choirs. Thanks so much for uploading this.
1991 - That was less than 2 years after the wall had come down. At this point of time I didn't even know that there was a town called Cambridge ;-) And it was the year that I (same age as Iestyn then) left my own choir due to that "drill sergeant" of a new director that had arrived some months prior. A few months later he left again - for the west. Despite it took me another 25 years to start singing again.
These are moments to make last. Childhood summers - and big cakes ;-) Iestyn did right there - just overdream those "boring" speeches of the old and keep a close eye on the cake instead :-D
Wow. Memories.
