Sorry for the late reply. First of all that year I tried to be 2-3 times a month in the mountains for long hikes/climbing. Outside of that I did quite a bit of cycling and stair stepper with a backpack. Some running, not much. I do bouldering on a daily basis so that helped too (mostly with the climbing part). Also I summited Gran Paradiso 3 days prior.
