The Matterhorn in Switzerland might be the most recognizable mountain in the world - but it’s also one of the deadliest. Mountaineers from all over the world travel to Zermatt to climb this iconic peak and our goal is to climb to the summit via the Hornli Ridge. The Matterhorn has seen over 600 deaths since its first ascent in 1865, averaging 4 deaths per year! But with 5 recent fatalities on the mountain, it had us questioning whether we should attempt the climb ourselves or not. Juggling between our love for the mountains and the fear of dying was a balancing act as we quested forward to climb, the one and only, Matterhorn. Enjoy:)

How about a thumbs up for the ol’ algorithm? 😊
Sunscribed and liked. (If interested in Swiss urban climbing visit my channel, thanks!)
Honestly love that you folks bailed. A good bail shows more character than a reckless push. Thanks for normalizing smart decisions in mountaineering.
It was a good call too cause a storm DID come in. I should have got footage but I was so dead 💀 haha
Agreed. There have been so many accidents and deaths that could have been prevented if people would have just trusted their gut. 👏🏽
@@codyandvictoria Bailing is never a bad call. Very good that you share this amazing story and show that not every mountaineer is reckless!
This has nothing to do with bailing, but everything with maturity. Live in harmony with nature and not against it.
Great job you two!!!!
Amazing editing and story telling. 😍
As Ed Viesturs says, "Getting to the top is optional, getting down is mandatory" I think you made the right decision
I’m mostly a hiker than a rock climber and I can definitely say that mountain looks extremely spicy! Congrats on making it that far. I recently had to turn around at Mt Whitney due to AMS and man that was a tough call. We just keep on hiking, keep on climbing. Big big shoutout to your insane level of cinematography and story telling. You deliver better quality for every new video. It’s insane! Congrats to both of you.
We’ve been there with AMS too. Never a bad reason to turn around. It happens. Live to see another day! 🙌🏼
production quality and your hard work totally hats off
Oh man so much effort into this one - probably too much honestly - but it was fun!
@@codyandvictoria ya doing advanture stuff and shoting at the same time is difficult as hell but worth it ... Love it and also color grading ❤️
The production quality of this video is truly top tier! Color grading, music, voice overs etc its just so incredible haha Plus a great story! Thanks for what you guys do!
Haha so much work in this one! 😅 thanks for noticing!
Responsible and commendable choice. I also bailed my first attempt about 600ft from the summit. It will always be there if you decide to do it again with everything you learned. Such an amazing video and storytelling. You guys rock!!
Your best video ever. Thank you. Exceptional editing and cinematography.
Failure No!! Respect YES!!
Thank you for this very nice video. You did the right thing by turning back instead of pushing on. The Mosley Plates just before and after the Solvay hut are not easy (IMHO) and further up it gets more scatchy. Maybe you'll be back at another time to finish this adventure? I would recommend to hook up with a Swiss mountain guide and first do some preparation climbs in the region before actually trying Matterhorn. They will also help for altitude acclimatization.
Yeah I mean we could have made the summit had we started earlier I think!
Great video!! A little bummed I knew the ending so early on in the video. We’ve all been in the spot where you call it to be better safe than sorry. We are all here for the journey not the result. This video more than others you’ve posted had a lot of explaining the result rather than enjoying the journey. Cheers and keep it up!!! 🎉
Just trying to make a film - idk haha
@@codyandvictoria it was great.
@@codyandvictoria Sorry if I came off a little critical. I absolutely love your guys videos and this one was no different. Those videos are super hard to film and edit. Keep at it and hope you get more sponsors. I’m big into the outdoors hiking, and MTB and still haven’t found a great bag that can accomplish both all while carrying camera gear. Maybe that’s another video idea. Keep it at! 🔥
Insane that you guys make amazing films like this, by yourselves. Looks like you have a whole crew working behind the scenes. Awesome work!!
We wear a ton of hats for sure 🧢👒🎩🪖⛑️ wish we had a crew!!
Absolutely incredible film!
Always appreciate you coming through dude! Thanks for checking it out 🙏🏼
Great job great decision guys, thats is what is climbing are, enjoy it
Quality of your videos are getting ridiculously good
Amazing Video! Greetings from Switzerland🇨🇭
Beautiful. That is all I have to say. Beautiful
Thank you🙏
Love Zermatt
Expensive but amazing!
@@codyandvictoria Switzerland is very expensive, but the land is beautiful.
That was like The north face documentary shit! Thanks so much for that!!
I’ve watched every North Face doc like 100x 😂😂
Top tier production!
Keep up the great work friends.
Thanks Aaron! Hope you guys are well
Ok, you didn't get to the summit, but WOW! Clear views when it can be obscured by clouds and even being on the mountain itself is something!!
Such a sick edit! Good on y'all for knowing when to bail.
bro went crazy with the editing on this one
It was a fun test for sure. Gave myself a little extra time for the edit
perfect ❤❤
Sorry but I didn't understand. Why didn't you reach the top?
Because it takes a very long time to finish going up and then an even longer time to go back down. It’s approximately a 12hr day depending on your speed and we were just too slow on the way up with a storm coming in in the evening.
@@codyandvictoria ok now i understand. I don't think you were late given your training. However, on the Matterhorn you have to be fast.
This is freakin awesome
DANNY! 😭😭 We love you! Thanks so much 🙏🏼 Tell Anna we said hello and come visit sometime :)
So beautiful! Color was unreal too, gotta get your workflow! I kept thinking how scary that climb looked and then remembered you were also filming the whole thing. Well done, thanks for sharing the adventure! Well told 👌🏻
You know better than anybody that filming the thing is way different than just doing the thing. 😅 Always appreciate you checking out the videos. Happy to have a remote color session whenever you want! 🤘🏼
Sounds like a successful climb to me. You may not have reached the top but you had an epic day on the mountain and safely returned. Those views are out of this world. I would have shit my pants just looking at the Matterhorn knowing I’m gonna climb it. Gorgeous mountain but intimidating at the same time.
As a long time follower and someone who’s from your neck of the woods. I feel like your editing has just stepped up another level. This was awesome.
Glad it’s noticeable. Crazy what you can do when you’re not pushing out videos every 2 weeks 🥵
Why were you roped up the whole time?
Don't see any gear, and definitely not short-roping properly to prevent falls.
Just seems as though you're tethered so if one person falls you're BOT pulled down the mountain. . .
There’s some gear that’s worth being roped for.
Edit: now that I have some time to respond. We’re obviously filming a video here. A lot of times one handed. No production crew or anything so it’s not always going to look text book. We pick our moments when it’s safe enough to film and when it isn’t. Obviously the follower hanging on to slack isn’t ideal but that’s how it has to be when you don’t have an anchor and you’re getting a shot. We choose our risks wisely.
Just watched your video with the Matterhorn in the background (at a hotel overlooking the campsite were you stayed). What a gorgeous town and scenic area to visit. Not a climber so enjoyed seeing what it takes to make this type of difficult ascent, kudus for not risking it when you ran out of time. I took the easy way up, Gornergrat railway. What spectacular views, thanks for sharing those breathtaking views from the mountain.
This video is just insane, like everything, the story, the filmmaking. I felt like more than in a movie, keep going. I'm really interested in your filmmaking especially the color grading, how do you grade colors, looks awesome:)
Thanks Jason! Much respect. We’re definitely hoping to make more films like this so stay tuned. As for color - I tried out dehancer on this one with a custom lut on the back end. Took some tweaking but love it so far. Got a coupon in the description if you want to give it a try. More videos soon!
Great film and footage guys. Wise choice to turn around so close to the summit but ultimately the correct decision giving yourself the best chance to climb again. I know the exact feeling standing on the shoulder and making that call a couple of years back. Safe climbing.
Wow, the Matterhorn is no joke, and an absolutely epic adventure. Too bad about the summit, but that's just part of being in the mountains, it's your wisdom and humility that keeps you safe, and I appreciate you talking about your perspective on summiting. But the production and editing on this video was insane, so well done and loved the storytelling, I really enjoy the documentary style.
Excellent job, and I love your perspective on not summitting. Being in the mountains in Switzerland is amazing in itself, isn't it?
There are 2 types of guys:
a.- Hey, cool mountain I climbed it first time with no preparation at all, was easy(goes in slippers).
b.- This is the deadliest mountain, I will probably gonna die.
Dude! Your video popped up on my algo! Been forever since I’ve met you at Lake Tahoe! Great to see you’re on this path and obviously still doing great things. Cheers to you and yours! 🎉
Just today in the news: two guys from Vietnam had to be rescued at 3500 in snowy conditions without air lifting capabilities. They were stuck, had inappropriate gear (not even climbing boots) and were pretty close to freezing to death.
Are you guys even sweating? My back would be soaked after the first dayhike 😅 Love the video. Beautiful colors. Love the retro looks in between. I think it’s better to see more videos of you enjoying life than one last video of you summiting. Good decision 🤙
Just WOW! Much love from Frankonia Germany!
You guys are amazing people, adventurers, and by far the best film makers on UA-cam! This was so great to watch!
Such a beautiful film - thanks for sharing the journey :)
Im personally very stoked you guys made it down safely
Great video and good decision to turn around and not risk anything! This year I successfully climbed the Matterhorn on July 30th, but I also saw some dangerous things and especially people risking everything. There have been so many deaths this year on the Matterhorn...
this was so well put together! And the images! Wow :D thank you for this!
This video is top shelf.
What camera are you using for vids? I swear the clarity is incredible.
Omg, nice work, just beautiful
Really enjoyed the video. Stunning scenery, great storytelling, tight editing and kudos on the smart decision.
You guys are awesome
Never change
Thank you again for the information on Matthes crest that was a gnarly adventure and a huge hike, but totally worth it 😎
Sweet! Glad you went for it!!
I think this is your best video yet, congrats! Show us more stuff you guys did in Europe.
great lesson, very real and helpful way to look at climbing mountains.
A conga line to the summit .
There are many routes to the top of the Matterhorn hornil is the worst imho.
If you go in the Alpine try something less crowded preferably being the only team on the mountain.
Even better a test piece or big classic route.
Another note it's all about the style in which you choose to commit and the type of route you take ridges are great fun usually modarate faces are tough with high exposure traverse or link ups are the best of both.
"The last thing I want to do is die on this mountain" Yeah, it would be the last thing you do. Just like everybody else.14:45
Congratulations on your very mature and wise decision!👍
Good effort, sensible retreat.
Congrats on some big steps in your adventurer journeys. Going to Europe and getting into alpine is huge.
Your best Video so far, I love it 😍 keep up the good work!
I love the storytelling! I was on edge until the very end.
Great video guys. Super inspirational. Great filming too. Only just found you both, so new sub here :) Keep climbing and creating!
Thanks for being here!
One of the best yet? Even better than it's relatable, not all gung ho must climb energy, but one more mindful and respectable of your own limits. Loved it
Thanks man! A little more time in the edit was a nice change for us
Well thats no Disneyland ride, you made it farther than 99 1/2 percent of us ever will. Beautiful scenery 😊
It was like the most dangerous Disneyland ride but for mountaineers🤣 and the views were unbeatable!
I bailed on "lesser" peaks. Good call 😁
Wow...stunning videography and story telling! Your videos haven't been showing up in my feed lately so now I turned on "notifications" for them and have several to catch up on. While I'm not a rock-climber, I adore hiking and backpacking, and I appreciate you taking us all along for the adventures you do. Much appreciated!
Thanks for turning those on! Our schedule is a little less frequent these days but hopefully the videos are worth the wait
@@codyandvictoria Definitely worth the wait! There's obviously A LOT that goes into them and it's crucial to pace yourselves so, hopefully, you're also continuing to enjoy the process and not burnout.
The best mountaineers are those having the most fun.
Absolute masterpiece, you must feel so proud not just for climbing the Matterhorn but to document it so perfectly. Your best video so far in my opinion! Watching from my hotel in Chamonix and wishing Victoria a speedy recovery from her fall
Haha so jealous you’re in Cham!
Absolutely gorgeous cinematography. Feels like a full production outdoor film!
Mission success ✅
Amazing video!
Literally every trip whenever we get back I’m like “yay, we didn’t get hurt!” So this really resonated! Looks insane, glad yall got to go!
Hahaha not getting hurt is definitely a win!!… ask me how I know🤣🤦♀️

@@codyandvictoria ugh, slipped my mind when I was commenting 💛 hope you’re healing up ok!
Best film yet
Best mountaineer is an alive one. ❤
@codyandvictoria what electronic drum set is that? I have a Roland TD 6.
It’s just the Alesis nitro Max. Nothing special but it’s been nice to learn on.
You guys are criminally underrated! Support from Munich 🙌
Cheers!! Thanks for being here
full chills, insane editing guys!!!
Thanks so much 🙌🏼
Amazing work!
You guys are absolutley awesome, the quality of your videos is utterly amazing, but what draws me back to you each time is you both as people, I'd watch you in 240p 😉
❤️❤️❤️
Awesome story-telling. I can relate to your perspective. Thanks for sharing. Planning to be in the Alps to enjoy the mountains in 2026.
Sounds awesome! Enjoy it out there
Incredible! You both are awesome!
Thanks friends 🙌🏼 Love the Zodiacs!
Good decision making on route, but with hundreds of classic routes at your fingertips why not throw shade on them? or climb the route content free? the hornli ridge is a zoo thanks to the 'ol algorithm' plus its iconic place in climbing culture and history, it does not need your help to make it more popular , and crowds will only add to the hazard level and lead to the canton and mountain guides to ram through stricter rules..... you guys shoulder a piece of that responsibility whether you like it or not as content creators, so again i ask why not nudge folks towards dozens of classic routes in the area? Cool routes abound and i like your stuff but growing up in this valley its sad seeing what its turned into... crowded and crazy expensive
The Hornli Hut only holds a certain number of people so that alone keeps crowds to a certain capacity. Making content is our job. Idk what type of response you’re looking for here. Maybe they should limit the number of beds at the hut if it’s too crowded. Seems to me like the town of Zermatt and or the hut keepers like the business otherwise they’d restrict it. Way less people would do it if there wasn’t a comfortable hut to sleep in
Best video!
Beautiful film !!!
videos so sick guys! I leave for switzerland in 2 days, wont be doing any mountaineering this time around but hopefully some mulitipitch sport!
Enjoy it!
Very nice! Just climb it with a guide. I did it this year, one of the deadliest in history (over 10 dead people I believe?). It is just not worth the risk. You basically follow the guides anyway, without them is too hard to find the route, so just find a guide and go there. If you know the route, the route is easy. The only scary section was at the slopes near the summit, where you are basically "in the air", like my guide said and a mistake means that you die. You could always pitch up to the top but you will not make it in time, so with a guide you will have another safety.
We obviously COULD do it unguided. Just need to move faster next time
Whoa-way to over analyze and under perform. But hey, you gotta start somewhere and surviving is mandatory. Better luck next time
What? lol
very nice video❤
Loved this one. Also, production quality is insane!!!
🔥🥵
What is the purpose of being roped up? There is no crevasse danger. I would honestly assume that the rope makes it more dangerous because of an increased risk in rockfall and it garuntees that you are going to kill your partner if you fall
There is gear on-route
incredible video. I got a little emotional seeing that sunset. how incredibly lucky the both of you are.
So beautiful up there!
Great video guys! 🎉 I thought that climbing Matterhorn was only allowed with a mountain guide. You must have been one of the last one allowed to leave the hut in the early morning?
Yes exactly. Last ones to leave which is why we ran out of time!
Great effort team! Was defo worth watching on the big screen this week. 🙌🏻
Glad to hear it’s getting a proper viewing
“The best climber is the one who has the most fun”
Alex Lowe
“Rule number 1 have fun” is what we always say! I think I got it from a film somewhere. Maybe it was “Free as Can Be”
Absolutely phenomenal film!! I loved every moment. Safe travels, friends!!
LOVE this video and you guys 🤗
Right back at ya 😉
I've been to Zermatt, but never on the Matterhorn. Congrats on making a good choice. The mountain will always be there and Zermatt is a stinkin' cute town.
Fantastic movie! You guys have come a long way both in your cinematography and albinism. Thanks for taking us along on the journey! YEW 🤙
Awesome video but leave the short roping with a hand coil to the guides who know what they are doing. Some sections were sketchy. Especially the following with a bunch of rope on one hand 😬
You really don’t have a choice up there. If you’re building anchors it’s gonna take you two days to climb it. Also keep in mind we’re FILMING too which is why the slack builds up for the follower. Obviously we’re alive so no worries.
@@codyandvictoria sure you do if you know what you are doing. Friction belay of the leader are fine and that is what the guides are doing. Filming while short roping (with too much rope in the system) in exposed terrain is just a bad idea.
what a dream
THE dream!
Dope AF!
Best video yet ! Your storytelling was on another level this video 😍🔥
" Spirits are moderate" - So Classic😂
Haha moderate at best
This video is incredible! Those drone shots 🔥🤤
