All you have to do is remove the insides of an old spark plug, attach a nut on the end, and then thread a ground down bolt through the end.
This tool makes it very easy to set the timing pointer on your outboard.
Instead of buying a specialty tool, you can build this one for basically free!

Thanks for the video, just saved me $50!
You're welcome. Glad I helped!
Thank you for posting. I'm gonna make one...
You're welcome!
Gracias Brother. Now to make mine.
Anytime!
How did you knock the guts out ?
Hammer and punch.
Many Thank's
Many Welcomes
Great idea! Thank you
This is a great tip! You're welcome!
thx you sir for this diy! nice idea
flesh199 You're welcome man. Anytime! It comes in handy for sure.
great tool, gonna build one of these this week for timing my TR6 with the heads on,
Yea, cheap, easy and they work.
Hey matt, how did you get the innards of the Spark plug out? Did you ream it with something? Or can it be knocked out with a hammer and I've just not hit it hard enough? I don't have a press, so I need to find a way to get it out of there. Thanks!
Hey, just smash the white part with a hammer. Then chip the little white pieces out of the metal part with a hammer and screwdriver.
Make sure to blow out or wash out the metal part so that nothing falls in your motor.
Thanks matt, gonna try this now. can't wait to degree my cam and get my car back on the roadddd
Cool, you are welcome!
Thumbs up. Nice job. Did you have to drill out the hole?
Thank you so much
You're welcome
I had a guy on the AOMCI AOMCI Facebook page tell me he uses a piston stop to torque flywheel nuts. My flywheel torque spec is 105 ft.lbs. he said he has been using the piston stop for 35 years to torque nuts. I'm not going to do it. He also said piston are forged steel. Any I have seen are aluminum. I bought a automotive flywheel wrench to hold the flywheel.
NEVER use the piston stop tool to torque the flywheel nut. That's insane. The pistons are aluminum. Use a flywheel holder tool.
for my 5.7l went to harware store and bought a 1/2" x 20 thread bolt w/at least 2.5-3.0" thread under $3
What did you do for the spark plug threads?
The threads on the plugs of my 5.7l are 1/2"x20 thread count. So I buy a 5" long by 1/2" dia. bolt with fine(20 thread count) threads and just screw the whole bolt into the plug socket. As long as the length of the threads themselves are long enough - should be no prob contacting piston head. The threads don't wind up the whole bolt usually, so just make sure theres enough thread to get deep enough to contact piston.
I didn't know that. I thought all plug threads are metric? Good tip though, that way you don't have to make an adapter like I did.
how much the bolt a enters the cylinder to touch the piston
Gringo196 sf
You start with the bolt backed out almost all the way up. Then you just run it in one or two turns at a time. Or do it the other way around. Turn it all the way in bring your piston up against the bolt stop the back the bolt off one turn. Move the piston up against it and repeat until the bolt moves up and the piston clears the bolt and starts back down. Screw the bolt in a quarter of a turn. If the piston doesn’t hit the bolt screw it in another quarter turn. Repeat until you find TOP DEAD CENTER
You can find them all over e bay but there like 30 bucks or more I just use old pice of starter rope doubled over its free
The rope method is not a good enough for an outboard. It is not precise enough. You need to be able to feel and adjust when the piston comes up to TDC on an outboard. The rope could get stuck in the 2 Stroke cylinder ports.
If the rope catches in there you may end up taking the whole power head apart.
How in the hell did you get the porcelain out of the center? I have destroyed 2 plugs so far. I just can’t get it to break out??
A screw driver and a hammer!
@@MattsShop I have a 10mm plug. It just keeps crushing the threads so I can’t use them. I’ve tried just about everything!!
If i was to tdc the first cylinder. Just screw in cyl 2 till it take stop?
Cylinder 1 and 2 are opposing cylinders they would be opposite.
how far the bolt goes into the cylinder to touch the piston
You screw it in and out and rotate the piston until the pointer reads TDC on the flywheel. At least over 1". Make sure it's safe and won't start with the TDC tool in.
@@MattsShop thanks and very good video
Will it work for a Harley shovelhead v twin motorcycle engine??????????? ¿??????
It should
How do you use this?
Disconnect the battery. You take all the spark plugs out, rotate the engine with the tool inserted and adjust everything until you find TDC. There are timing marks on the flywheel. Don't ever start the engine with the tool in.
Good luck getting the insides to come out !!!!!! On my second sparkplug and have destroyed 2 punches !!!! So that's why you don't show the most important part !!! Almost useless video !!!!
Lol it's not useless at all
Just break the guts out with a hammer lol.
look for Maggot Moto's video. I'll try to post a link but I'm guessing it will come down.
