On the Apple MagSafe Battery Pack there is no red indicator, it's amber and it doesn't mean it's empty, it's just not fully charged. And the plastic is not soft, not sure where you got that, only the magnet side is soft. The shell is still hard plastic but not shiny, it's a matte white.
