i understand that Pierre has to mark up in order to stay afloat, but it's the part where he claims to have personally grown the crops i sold him that i start wanting to run him *and* morris out of town and become the valley's direct-selling queen of produce
It's not even an understanding. It's an expectation. If I sell something to a retail place, I expect them to sell it for 3x as much. But yeah, the issue is lying about the origin.
That and he has a dialogue where he talks about wanting to open a bunch of new stores and become filthy rich (Not sure if this a new line added for 1.6 or it was there before) but yeah he's any better than Joja imo, probably the exact same as when Joja got started. I feel like he has less of a small business owner mindset and more of a start up mindset lol.
It's even worse than that. If you sell him good quality crops- yes he'll lie and say he's grown them himself. BUT if they're poor quality then he'll have no problem saying that the crops are from the farmer. WTF. (I always choose the Joja route because I'm petty and I play with the Expanded mod anyway.)

It's not that he resells them for a profit, it's that when he resells gold quality crops he claims he grew them, but when he resells normal quality crops (which the other villagers think are gross) he tells people you grew them.

The first year is rough. I buy the backpacks and some essentials. But, as soon as I get that coffee bean or ancient seed, I no long need Pierre. There is a darker path. Were the community center is built. Joja goes out of business. Pierre watches helplessly as I rack millions of coin, while not spending a dime at his shop. He is forced to open shop 7 days a week. Meanwhile I purposefully shop at Krobus and the Dwarf. I even stop at Marnie's and Robin's carpentry shop.

Yeah, in a capitalist society, that's literally the only way stores and businesses can survive. If he sold the farmer's crops for the same amount he bought them, Pierre would've gone out of business pretty much instantly without being able to make a profit.

Western society, even in more socialist societies, do however run off profit as if the store is too stingy for the farmer then the farmer will switch occupations and if the store is a money pit then it will be a problem for the owner (government in this instance) they will start stacking up debt which will eventually turn into higher taxes.
The problem is, he claims he grew the quality ones himself, and that you grew the "average" ones, which the customers will tell you they don't like as much. Willy, on the other hand, is honest when he sells someone your fish, at least!
