Got my ‘96 in February. Anyone that gets into one needs to understand they will need love and all will have their challenges (unless they pay a mint for it!). I will NEVER let it go now :)
Great video. Recently sold my 93 and now currently looking for a 95-97. Like all vehicles that have exploded in popularity, prices for 80’s are all over the map. What some people are asking for well used and abused examples is ludicrous. Be careful out there. Don’t let the excitement of owning a legend, override your better judgement. If you have to, sleep on it. There will always be another one out there.
Awesome video! Some notes from when I bought my fzj80: Check to see if the back hatch lines up, the tailgates sometimes bend. Check for rust bubbles around the back hatch window, mine has no rust except there. Check seats for movement, they're known to break gears and be stuck. Gears available from gamiviti. Check vacuum lines, they're all small and hard to get to on the 1fz-fe so they may be original and a cause for rough idle. If the airbag light is one it may not be a hard fault, look up hot to reset it and try it on it spot, takes 5 mins.
I've had a few 80s and this vid is pretty spot on what to look for. I still have my 3fe powered tractor for heavy off road use 430,000kms and still drives good and its been running dual fuel with LPG for 30 years with no issues. Also had a 97 with the td engine got it of a old bloke that took very good care of it low kms around 220,000 when I got it that i used as a daily driver and tourer for 4 or 5 years, When covid hit after the restrictions were lifted but we still couldn't travel overseas for holidays the prices went crazy, I had some bloke when shopping at the grocery store offer me $50,000 for it and left me his card and said he would have his mechanic come and look at it. I didn't want to sell it but for 2 or 3 months the bloke kept ringing me up after his mechanic came when he offered $72,000 cash my wife said take it so I did regretful sale but I was not working and needed the money for my family.
Imo it would also help to take it to a mechanic for inspection. Bought mine for 16 and it looked fantastic but had to fork up 8k for mechanical issues which I did not spot since it ran perfect.
Mine has the white smoke so I'll probably need a head gasket. I may just slam a diesel in it and forget about it. Bought it reasonably cheap. I love a good challenge. Great video for newbies to the cult of the 80 series.
Great video, good content. Another thing to mention, while ridiculously minor, is to make sure before you buy a LC or LX450, make sure you like the exterior aesthetics. I bought an LX450 which has all the extra cladding and regret my decisions. It's not the end of the world, but if I wanted to remove it I'd be left having to weld dozens upon dozens of holes, using body filler, etc to get rid of that look. The other thing I think that's worth reemphasizing again is the cost of ownership. Unless you turn your own wrench, the cost of ownership will become very pricey. I've got well into $15k into mine, with at least $10k of that strictly maintenance and the other $5k aftermarket upgrades. A ton of people buy these, lift them and add bigger tires only to realize that they have a ton of overdue maintenance that is costly and then end up selling the vehicle because they wasted their money on a lift and tires right away. Keep up the great work and enjoy that family time. Us UA-cam followers aren't going anywhere........
Sure miss my 93 factory triple locked the trans went out couldn’t afford a replacement sold it for 5k had roughly 250k ish miles I remember when I got it was at a car lot started at 13k they kept dropping price and dropping price got it under 6 drove it everyday for quite few years it’s been gone for a year or so only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the Awd and the under powered and very low mpg but it definitely was a amazing vehicle they are getting very hard to find and very expensive with factory lockers
That quicktalking bit at 0:27 has me feeling attacked. My wife is still mad about me selling the GX470 to buy an FZJ80. Especially when I just told her the brakebooster went out on the way home from my trip last weekend.
Hello I’ve recently bought a 92 Land Cruiser however it doesn’t idle and stalls out, I’m struggling to find help on the issue and people has said it could be the maf sensor however I think it could be something else, if anyone could help id appreciate it so much
it could be a variety of things, the fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter, circuit opening relay, maybe check this video out ua-cam.com/video/POeaCoX73Ao/v-deo.htmlsi=l-NPh2cGKd0-Cnrf

WOW that is a solid price! it must have been a beautiful vehicle!
The check engine light, abs, and others should come on at first when you turn the key on, but then go off when the vehicle is started.
Imo it would also help to take it to a mechanic for inspection. Bought mine for 16 and it looked fantastic but had to fork up 8k for mechanical issues which I did not spot since it ran perfect.
You are right, a professional inspection is a great idea.
Mine has the white smoke so I'll probably need a head gasket. I may just slam a diesel in it and forget about it. Bought it reasonably cheap. I love a good challenge. Great video for newbies to the cult of the 80 series.
Excellent video!

How much you need to pay to fix the trans?

Love my 91 FJ80 with 3FE. It's slow but crazy comfortable, and a mule in the snow. Just listed it for sale, if anyone is looking. 300K miles
i love mine. if its not leaking oil and powerstearing fluid you probobly cant afford it are you it don't havy any in it lol
Horse poo poo. All
Those can be resolved. Love it enough to fix it
I really enjoyed watching you video and looking at buying an 80 series very soon. Where can I find the PDF?
stan.store/LNDCRUZIN
Thanks for this!
My pleasure!
Well done.
hey when are you going to make the pdf??
8:57 wait you shouldn't put power steering fluid in the power steering fluid reservoir? I'm confused 🤔
They came with ATF from the factory, so that is what Toyota recommends instead of power steering fluid.
How do I find the link to the PDF, please?
Really enjoyed your video 👍
its available now!

If it’s leaking walk away cause what other maintenance did they skimp on. Or be prepared to open the wallet to rebuild wear from lack of fluids
What to look for when buying a Landcruiser? A Nissan Patrol 💪🏻
