    Don't move there if you don't have money, would be a good first rule.

    grew-up in Monterey in the 70s and yes it was magical. BUT we just sold our home in the area because you are either working your butt off just to survive OR you have money and can enjoy the area to its fullness. I was a Big Sur kid and so many out of towners moved in and literally changed the area. I went to Monterey High, Worked Pebble beach, Dick Bruhn, Macy, Sax, NPGS Gold Course and I have to say- it's a great place to visit, but to live there- well you better have a solid financial situation. Best time to go for the crazy Post Card sunsets, go late Sept thru mid Nov. That is the time of year when the winds oar offshore and move the warmer weather to the coast causing UNREAL sunsets.

      Way gentrified, with a whole set of different crowd, with not having the vibe it once had. Born and raised here, and it is not as appealing as it once was in the early 80's and 90's. I can honestly say. Plenty of rude, invasive, and snobby people in the area and it's enough to make a person who was born here cringe. If you are poor, don't try to come to settle here, it will be very difficult, and competitive. If you are undocumented, chances are you will most likely fit in, and make it here pretty nicely Lol. In other words not worth it if you are a blue collar-worker. If you are a student, joining the military or coming for a vacation you will be just fine and if not, run, run ruun as far as you can 😅

    Don’t move here. Traffic is getting worse. And the Silicon Valley people are changing the area so it’s more like the Bay Area. I’m leaving the area because of the change of the hometown feel of carmel valley. Come visit, but we don’t need anymore mansions built

    If you can’t afford to live here and don’t like cold weather don’t live here. I don’t mean this in a mean way, however it rarely gets above 70.

    Born and raised in Monterey, and it's changed quite a bit. Extremely gentrified, expensive and a pay check away to being homeless. If you are rich, going to school, in the military or undocumented you will do just fine.

    We were on a holiday in Cali three years ago, we drove from LA to SF and we planned to stayed over for one night in Monterey. It’s such a beautiful place and we decided to stay for a couple of days here. We went around the Bay and enjoyed the whale watch. The drive everywhere is breathtaking and the views are amazing. Those who live there are blessed i so many ways. I always daydream of moving to Monterey one fine day. I have traveled to alot of places in the US and around the world and Monterey has a special place in my heart.
    What are the best places to live there with sea view?

      Yes Monterey truly is a beautiful location and I feel very lucky to live here. Places with sea views in order of affordability would be Seaside, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Big Sur, Carmel-By-The-Sea and Pebble Beach. If I can help with anything real estate related please let me know! toby.fernie@gmail.com and 831-233-0586.

    It's expensive in Monterey but you cannot beat the environment if you like the outdoors. Lots of places to hike, bike, swim, run, and surf. There is a very large community of people who enjoy the outdoors so it's easy to connect with like minded people. Also, the community is highly educated and interesting. If you are the least bit social and love the outdoors you will not be disappointed. Cost of living: Very high. Quality of life: Excellent. Climate: Very moderate, year around. World class entertainment events.

    After graduating from College in 1984, I landed a job in Monterey and moved there shortly after graduating, just renting a room in a house in North Monterey. While I was there, I had a bad job experience and couldn’t really get used to the area, having grown up in Southern California. After living there for six months, I decided I needed to get out of there. Back then, Fort Ord and other military branches had (some still do) had a big presence in Monterey, so there were lots of military personnel living there. I saw U-Haul trucks pretty much everyday where people were either moving in or out. I had decided that Monterey was a nice place to visit, but not to live there. It was just too impersonal and culturally different from Southern California. On weekends, I would go up to Santa Cruz, which had more of a Southern California vibe, and usually more sunny than Monterey, which what I remember was mostly overcast. It was always a dream of mine to live there, and I am glad I tried it so I won’t have any regrets.

    Living in this town for 3 years now. Beautiful, beautiful place; probably one of the best in the Country. I adjusted quickly to the colder weather (and I moved from FL); If I could afford a house here, I would stay x the rest of my life, but I cannot afford it :( For those who are looking to move in CA, look other costal cities: CA offers many cute cities and town along the coast (For Example, I liked SLO County). Maybe one can find a more affordable solution

      Glad to hear you're liking it in Monterey! It certainly can be expensive. If I can help in any way, please let me know. Certainly more affordable options out there like condos, Seaside, Marina or Salinas.

    I lived there for several years while stationed at the now-closed Ft. Ord. Beautiful but too damn cold for me. I should have purchased a home with my VA loan guarantee back in 1990. It would be worth a pretty penny now. I now live in a home in a beautiful beach town (Southport, NC) that would cost me $1.5 million dollars (4,368 sq/ft) if it were located in Monterey. It was 74 degrees yesterday January 3, 2023, so I landed where I want to be.

    I now realize how lucky I was to live on the central coast in the 90s. I could never afford it now. I hope to visit sometime, though. Thanks for this informative video.

      Certainly allowed to share your opinions as a Realtor as long as you're not encouraging people to move or not move to an area based on certain protected reasons. I do like sharing the good and the bad with viewers so they can make an educated decision if Monterey works for them.

    Is it worth buying a place to live there for a year and then rent it out to cover the expenses? Basically looking to breakeven with 0 down VA loan

    • @livinginmontereycalifornia831
      @livinginmontereycalifornia831  Рік тому

      Yes I think that it is a great location for an investment based on historical data and rents are really high in the Monterey area. Very few places to build on the peninsula so values and rents will remain high and keep going up. Send me an email at toby.fernie@gmail.com or call at 831-233-0586 and I'd be happy to help. With less buyer competition it's a great time to be a VA buyer and utilize the 0% down option.

    • @samanthak3353
      @samanthak3353 4 місяці тому

      Yes, it will be a great investment in the long run. However, for the first few months, you may have to spend some money to fix things (and those can be expensive) and maintain the place until you have a steady tenant(s). First year will be difficult, then on the second year you will start breaking even. If the property does not require too much maintenance and nothing breaks, then you can even start making a profit the following years.

    My old haunt. Where I came up from a youngster to adulthood. From 77-97. It was the best place to grow up. Having a love for the movie JAWS and marine biology this place was great and beyond belief. I know everything this man speaks of. My first Job was at the MBA when it opened. The memories. The stories. The ocean. The FOG. I miss it so much.....

    We live in a market economy. Prices are determined by how much people are willing to pay for something. If it is expensive it is because people are willing to spend a lot to live there because it is great! I spent 2 weeks in Monterey area in April and I know why people are willing to pay a lot to live there, it's because it is beautiful. Cheap areas of the country suck so they are inexpensive.

    • @livinginmontereycalifornia831
      @livinginmontereycalifornia831  11 місяців тому

      Yes very true. Prices are high as people want to live in Monterey and there aren't many houses for sale/purchase as it's hard to build here. Simple supply and demand.

      Hi Nancy. They share a border so not far at all. Certain streets like Ocean Avenue, David Avenue or Lighthouse Avenue are actually half in Monterey and the other have in Pacific Grove. There is a Whole Foods in Monterey at Del Monte Mall. Are you looking to move to Pacific Grove? it's a great community/location and my clients who have bought there love it.
