  • Progressive suspension front fork springs and heavier weight oil in hopes of improving the ride and feel of the 40 year old Magna. A quick evening job, simple to do while drinking a cold snack.
The Honda Magna was the first muscle bike that started a craze that has lasted for 40 years. Sporting a 90 degree V4 engine, Hydraulic Clutch, and shaft drive the Honda Magna was a direct attack on Harley. A cult following to this day the Honda Magna is a true classic that deserves more attention from the motorcycle world.

After what my friend and I went thru, Fronts forks just scare the heck out of my. You see. I got the 82 v45. from my friends boss with 2000 miles on it. So my friend and his boss flatten the rare tire. I got it couple month before his 83 v45 was coming. When we have them so some reason his mechanic at honda lowered the tubes 1/8th. Dont remember why. Never touched mine. Except four the Supertrap header and a opened the airbox up. We turned a corner coming from the bar and Just nailed it, I started to pull on him up to 130mph, and had to slow for light. as doing I notice, you always observe, his light passed my view. What. so I looked back and he was on the other side of me turning the wrong way., Looking back the other way I see him in the middle between the lanes, in the grass flipping and rolling. Then everything went flat. The bike is flat and so was he, Could see where they went. Finally my friend being 4-"-8" and super tough, got up. The front end starting a violent shaking. and he throw it off the road the best he could not to hit the asphalt. I think It is so critical to get that right. From my experience. I have my engine out but did not touch those fork tubes. I am so scared. Something that going 150 to see if its ok, is scary to me. I guess just marking the would be ok, but the total length is also taken into consideration.will just keep that in mind about the rake. cant be off much. Great bike. Glad to see more videos about them. Had mine since 1984.

Great to know that it was relatively straightforward and easy. I would enjoy your videos more if you included an the test ride so that we can understand your reaction to the difference noted and if you thought the job was worth it. Also, were your original progressive springs in spec? If they were perhaps you would only more notice the oil weight difference. let us know 👍

Great suggestion. Did not check stock spring spec, but the progressives are supposed to have a slightly higher spring rate. With my weight I wanted to get less dive, so springs and the oil change did that. It may be more the oil weight making that difference than the springs per say. Definitely can save money by not upgrading springs and just oil. You could even add a spacer to add preload to the stock springs. For me it was worth the time and effort.

Heavier weight oil doing good for you?

Overall between the new springs and heavier weight oil feels much better. I am looking at doing a full rebuild on the forks this winter just due to the right seal weeping some oil on occasion. But definitely an improvement. The oil that came out was really dirty and old so that may have been part of it too!

Thank you for the comment, something I have been looking into how to best upgrade that part of my content.
