I’m not sold on this new phenomenon of “boxes” battle box, coffee box, etc… You end up with cheap redundancy and crap you’ll never use. Within 10 seconds we hear how the two of the most important things on the table don’t come with a regular subscription. You are better off to pay for exactly what you want and get the best quality that your current checkbook funds will allow. Unless you’re a gluten for white elephant type parties.
Glad to hear it mentioned about having skills of some sort to go with gear. Far too many folks rely strictly on gear alone and UA-cam videos to prepare themselves for whatever. Everyone has varying skills and knowledge and we should remind ourselves that it’s never one and done for everyone. Good video
I used to get Battlbox, had the subscription for a couple years. I did get some really good gear from them that I still use. I dropped them due to the clutter that was with each box, looking at the numbers I am better off buying the gear I want instead of someone else picking it out for me.
I'd like to offer a water filter solution that might be helpful for those who use camelback style systems. Install a Sawyer mini filter inline on the drinking tube just before the mouthpiece. This allows you to submerge the reservoir to fill it and your done. In cold weather just run the the drinking tube over your shoulder and under your clothes to protect it from freezing. The Sawyer is much lighter, smaller and filters a lot more water than the 65 gallons the Grayl does. The Sawyer can also be used on a wide number of water bottles and also be used stand alone And NO i don't rep for Sawyer. I'm just a big fan of their products. I use them and they work.
I am with you, basically, but there's more to it. add a platypus activated coal inline filter to that setup and make sure to use a pre-filter, the Sawyer is famous for clogging up and you may be glad to reach 65 gallons. The thruhikers loved the Sawyer in the beginning but replaced it after a few weeks because it took an hour to filter a quart. pre filter is mandatory.
The issues you describe are because of improper use of the filter. Sawyer filters are designed to be back flushed. Back flushing/cleaning the filter on a regular basis will keep the filter flowing properly and free of debris. Pre filtering is a good idea if the water is full of particulate matter. If not, it is by no means mandatory. @@couchcamperTM
good luck finding clean water in the wild everytime. I would always recommend a pre-filter. and another important thing I missed: the filter must not freeze.@@brianintexas1108
I have 4 bug out packs next to the front door, 1 for bug out to my site, 1 for if I am forced deep into the woods to hide for the rest of my life, 1 for if the town gets destroyed and I want to scout out the town and one as a day pack.
0:51 the reason I don’t do boxes anymore. I just buy what I want after researching different items and new items that I may not of known about before. I used to have 4 or 5 different boxes coming every month from AR parts to fishing lures but I just think I save money by buying what I want and what I’m going to use. I see the fun in it though. The surprise factor and the experience is pretty cool.
Thanks for your input! I’ve always been hesitant for that very reason. I’m very picky about my gear and don’t have the money to take the chance either. I can see the appeal in the boxes though…
@@FueltheFires yeah I mean half the stuff you end up getting just sits and never gets used. I ended up trading or selling most of the stuff. It is really fun to do though.
Any kit can be a 4 season kit, providing the user is a seasoned outdoorsman. Proficient with any cutting tool with knowledge of flora & fauna plus knowing what mother nature can throw at them without any warning. The perfect outdoor persons? Our Mum & Dad. Of course we're talking about being in Australia although they have venture into a few countries in Africa, South America & Asia including the Sulawesi Islands. We feel the Battlebox is quite efficient even for a family of 4 but it also depends on their ages. You're most probably need to add & subtract individual items to suit individual requirement. I'm 29 yrs old & the twins are 26 so we carry our requirement on our back but it would be a challenge if the children are 12 yrs & below. There will be trade-offs no matter how perfect the BOB is, it is what it is.! That's why we always have a dry run with any new addition to our packs. Learn how to use it, repair it even modified it, making it a multi purpose item. If you bleed that means the knife is yours.! "The more you know, the less you carry" quote by Mors Kochanski. We do carry compasses but have learned to navigate by the moon & stars and watching airplanes. There's enough apparatus on that table for signaling including the inside of that Ready Wise & Peak meals. it's reflective is it not.? If you don't have a whistle, with that saw & knife you can make a "noise stick". We learn this from spending time with Australian Aborigines. Cut a 12inch by 2inch branch, baton it on each side so you'll get a flat piece of wood, just like a ruler. Make a hole on one end, put a paracord through the hole, about 2 feet in length, tie a knot at the end. Now swing it, it will make a haunting but loud noise. The Aboriginals survive for over 60 thousand years just having two sticks which are bush spears & two boomerangs which were for hunting. Nothing can top that mate.! So can you rely on the Battlebox 72 hrs? Yes of course.! But can 5 grown experienced outdoorsmen survive 72 hrs with the Battlebox? Cheers for the updates etc. Cheers from Australia.
