Hi Sweeties! Thanks for watching. Remember, this is not intended to be medical advice. I am not a doctor or nutritionist. I am only sharing my research and personal experience. My goal with this video is to encourage people who are afraid of soy to look deeper at the research around soy and specific conditions. Wishing you the best!!
Consumed soy for roughly 25 years, no hot flashes or the maladies of menopause did I ever experience. Thanks for your content. The false narrative was circulated by a large meat industry whose name I shall not divulge, but sure that you get my drift. In any event, I love tofu and thankful that I never believed the lie that circulated.
I was vegan for years when younger, and went back and forth between that and vegetarian in my 40's. Now in my 50's, going back to vegan (particularly getting fully rid of dairy) has worked wonders!
I’m not menopausal yet but something similar happened to me as i used to get HORRIBLE monthly cramps… they are gone now. This is not a scientific study and I cannot promise this to anyone else just something drastic I noticed!! It’s wild…
Thank You for sharing this important information! My husband is on a plant based lifestyle with me and thriving, strong and building muscle. He also loves eating my tofu dishes. I love your content and have been following you for at least 10 years or more! You have inspired me for such a long time and I am grateful for you. Blessings
Different body chemistry and make up between the races... all cannot eat everything others eat... black people are good example. Sorry we are not all the same
hello, i am the Asian living in Asia and when people outside Asia have a go at soy, i always chuckle. perhaps it's a climate thing, but my people have been eating soy for hundreds of years. we're fine (until processed food coming, ofc). i eat tempeh almost every single day - since it's one of my favourite food - ever since i was a child, so are the rest of my family members and pretty much everyone i know around here. it's a food that's just there next to rice and tofu. we're quite fine, haha.
Soy was created to use in plastics it was never to be consumed ❤but to each his own but I was warned of Soy induced cancer from a woman who got it from drinking Soy milk!❤
My favorite soy food is fermented soybeans (natto). I’ll admit it’s an acquired taste but it’s one of my comfort foods, especially after becoming vegan. Really healthy too. Traditional Asian foods heal you. Our ancestors knew how to eat healthy
I love tofu and edamame! Being in perimenopause, I researched ways to help with the lack of estrogen as I wanted to eliminate the symptoms I was experiencing, weight gain, a growing belly, and hot flashes. Soy is an isoflavone (plant estrogen), giving me the estrogen my body needs. It is also a complete protein containing all 9 essential amino acids. My symptoms are gone, my weight is being managed, and the added benefit is that my hair is super thick and long. I never had thick, long hair, so being 51 is a fantastic benefit!
If you are concerned about estrogen in food, consider that dairy cows are milked even when pregnant, and their milk contains those hormones. The key is absolutely to eat a diversity of foods! 5 minutes of research into the dairy or slaughter industry is enough to show where cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, hormone imbalance and multiple environmental woes stem from.
Thank you for this video and helpful information on soy :) I want to say that a person can build muscle without having to "go to the gym". A pair of dumbbells at home can be used to build muscle, as long as they're heavy enough. Heck, my cast iron pan weighs 12 pounds. And a full crock pot is easily twice that. Body weight exercises like squats, sit-ups, push-ups, climbing stairs and walking uphill can also build muscle, especially if a person is just starting or if they're able to progressively do more. I started out with 5 pound weights and a simple arm routine (during COVID) and worked my way up to 12 pounders. I have used those while doing squats and sit-ups, as well. I'm not necessarily saying that these things are what a person should do (because every body is different), but I want to stress that there are ways to build muscle without necessarily having to go to the gym. - Blessings!
Good advice!! Also, walking and yoga are weight-bearing exercises. I have arthritis in my back and hips, and I find these two exercises much better at controlling pain than lifting weights.
Thank you! I am a person who went bananas eating soy products to learn I was already high is estrogen. Thankfullly, no cancer diagnosis over here. Edamame is so yummy!
Thank you for this. I am new to using soy but I wanted to get real understanding because there were and are a lot of myths (lies) out there. I feel better with this info and will continue to research as well. I look forward to trying out some recipes.

Great video! For anyone interested, a youtuber by the name hbomberguy did a video were he debunked the study that is responsible for most of the misinformation about "soy and estrogen". Or atleast the study that haters always point to.
@Elnerist this happened to me, and my Taiwanese gastroentologist said it can be common among omnivores trying to turn vegetarian. I realised later on that I tolerate some beans better than others, and needed time to adjust to higher levels of fibre. I don't eat soy daily anymore but am able to eat it weekly. Same goes for black beans and kidney beans, I can eat them sometimes but not all the time (even after soaking and discarding the water)
@@petraaccount I heard a similar thing: When people aren‘t used to eat (lots of) legumes they can have trouble digesting it at first. For most people that gets better when they start with little portions of legumes and let the body adapt to it better. But when there‘s also a problem with soy sauce that sounds different. Maybe one could check if it‘s a soy allergy then.
@Alina_Schmidt I agree that it is a legumes thing, and I am sensitive to some legumes more than others, which means I eat other types more frequently. For my sibling, she was put on a restrictive diet for advanced endometriosis, which includes but is not limited to all soy products (she cannot consume dark chocolate, dairy or legumes at all). So I totally understand the need to err on the side of caution. (I also know people who consume tofu and soy milk but not soy sauce, because of severe gluten intolerance, not necessarily related to hormones)
Hi First I bought your original book and plan on buying your new one. I am not vegan but enjoy plant based cooking. I am allergic to soy and nuts. Sometime cooking plant based can be challenging because of the focus on soy as a main protein. Please try to offer non-soy alternatives please. ❤️
Such a useful and informative video - thank you, Jenné! I was lucky to learn about the benefits of soy specifically for peri-menopause from a video of Dr Neal Barnard on the Physicians Committee YT channel some years ago. I keep telling other woman about it when they mention hot flushes, etc., but it sadly seems to fall on deaf ears.
This was so great! I do have a question though. So, soy allergies can be outgrown, but what about a soy intolerance? I tried using [organic, unsweetened] soy milk in my coffee a while back and I loved it! But a couple days after making the switch, my stomach was always upset. I took the soy out for a week and was fine; then tried it again a week later and the same thing happened, which led me to assume I have an intolerance. For long-term vegans out there, is this an accurate conclusion to come to? I haven’t eaten a lot of tofu, and I’ve never had tempeh, so I haven’t properly tested my theory yet. And from what I can tell, I don’t have a problem with the more processed soy found in various food products, so I’m just not sure what to do or think. I’d like to try it again, but was just curious. Thanks! 😊
Hmm. I haven't looked into it, but I have heard some vegan chefs say that gluten intolerance usually is actually an intolerance to a pesticide commonly used on wheat. They recommend trying organic flour to find out. Have you controlled for organic varieties of soy?
☝🏾☝🏾 Soy boy here! Great video as always, Jeanette!! You look absolutely stunning! Soy is in everything and it's totally something nobody can fully avoid, because it's also fed to animals and in their products. Some of us soy boys do straight up snack on a block of plain or seasoned cooked/uncooked super firm tofu as if it's a block of cheese. Also, some Vegan cheeses are made with tofu. 💯
I got my fibroids taken out. Previously I drink a lot of soy milk because I am lactose intolerant. I had stopped consuming soy because I thought maybe the soy caused it. I want to return to consuming soy because I’m now in menopause. What do you think
I feel great when I eat tofu, tempeh, soy curls and edamame, but not soymilk for whatever reason, and not Boca products. I don't blame the soy for that, I think it's a processing issue.
Giving you a very high positive comment regarding your ability to talk and speak without using the word "like" a million times over. It just infuriates me that a person cannot complete one sentence without using the word like a million times. I appreciate your knowledge of soy. Soy milk and tofu are my number one go to for my protein and I like it. Good job explaining the soy controversy
I eat plenty of organic soy in different ways and I love it. I also eat other types of plant protein. I stopped eating flesh many years ago and still very masculine at 68. Very healthy. By the way it should be a crime to be so beautiful, you are killing me. Thanks for the info.
It's been so frustrating trying to figure out the legitimate, non-biased takes on soy or any other "controversial" food item. My current struggle is a recent fibroid diagnosis, which is apparently more common in black women than others. There's so much information on but sides regarding the relationship between soy and fibroids. Since there is so much conflicting info (added to the fact that the medical community at large doesn't really know a whole lot about fibroids, why we we get them, why black women are disproportionately affected, how to treat them long-term WITHOUT getting a hysterectomy, etc.), I've chosen to significantly limit my intake. But honestly, I have no idea if that's the right thing to do or not. Sigh.
Same boat. My estrogen levels are higher than my doctor would like, and we monitor through hormone tests 2x a year. He recommended fermented soy such as tempeh and soy sauce over tofu if possible. I try to consume a range of soy and non soy proteins, but my sister based upon her doctor's advice avoids soy totally. In the end, it is important to eat in a manner that is comfortable to you :) (Hormone tests are an expense and not always an option, I prioritise them because of certain diseases that run in the family.)
I have a coworker who tried to steer me away from eating soy. He told me that soy absorbs the oxygen from your body. I don’t know where he got this from, but has anyone else ever heard of this claim?
What do you do when you have an allergy to soy, corn, sesame, gluten, peanuts, and walnuts? My wife just found this out and we trying to find options but its not looking good.
That sounds tough, sorry to hear! Not that I have perfect answers, but I thought of rice, quinoa and other gluten free grains or pseudo grains. For protein sources I‘d think of all kinds of legumes that aren‘t soy, basically all kinds of lentils and all kinds of beans that aren‘t soy). And maybe you can find nuts and seeds she isn‘t allergic to? (possibly cashews, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios, flax and chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumkin seeds). Wish you and especially her all the best in your / her journey to figure out what works.
I could die if I drank soy milk! I get very bad anaphylaxis but weirdly enough if I have anything with soybean oil or soy lecithin, it does nothing to me 🤷♀️
Just got into eating tofu because that makes me eat less. My husband enjoyed the tofu sandwich I made. So I was nervous hoping that you would say don’t eat it.
I love tofu and soya milk is my preferred choice of plant milk. I'm about 2 years in to menopause and so far, minimal symptoms 🤞🤞 Not sure if that's genes, soy or both but I've done soya milk/tofu/edamame all since before perimenopause so good chance it's helped 😁
I believe that soy is very good for you, but I believe that it best to either get organic with less ingredients or just make it ourselves… the people in Asia still make it they make it at home
What foods exactly do you mean? And what do you mean with ingredients? You can‘t compare low processed soy foods like tofu, tempeh, soy sauce or miso paste with the high processed foods that are, when eaten extensively, a health risk. There aren‘t too many ingredients to worry about there - tofu it is to my knowledge only mashed soy beans that are fermented. In addition to that you can also just cook and eat soy beans like any other legume. Or you use edamame, which are just a less ripe version of soy beans. Looking for less ingredients doesn’t make sence here because they are the ingredients (to a full meal or even just a snack). I think that‘s mostly the kind of soy this video is about.
