    A WORD OF WARNING
    Regardless of how good you are with the speed bar almost every glider is more prone to deflations during accelerated flight due to the decrease in angle of attack. In addition, the extra speed you are carrying into the collapse means the wing reacts far more violently. During certification tests almost every glider pulls its highest grades during the accelerated tests, and even very safe wings react faster when collapsed on the speed bar. For these reasons you should only consider using the speed bar when you have enough height to recover from a major collapse. Skimming trees at full speed will eventually see you in them!

  • @TheMatgaw
    @TheMatgaw 3 роки тому +2

    Hey man. At the very beginning of the video you have a major mistake in the explanation. The paramotor doesn't go up with increased power, because it's "sustained by strings and pilot is pushed forward", but because the angle of attack is constant and therefore the speed is constant, so the energy is converted into more lift. The same goes for your cessna - if the pilot didn't chance the angle of attack using trim, he would be constantly climbing when power is increased to 100%. In order for Cessna to fly faster and not climb, the AoA needs to be reduced by horizontal stabiliser. Same goes for paramotor, but we change AoA using speed system

  • @daviddewitt9365
    @daviddewitt9365 4 роки тому +1

    Your videos are great, Anthony! Great editing and solid information. I liked the explanation of the risers and the speed bar and how the wing reacts to trim and the bar. This is often lacking in a lot of videos about flying paramotors. I have not see one in which the pilot flew this low so that was interesting and good you include a safety warning. I am 71, not likely to ever be able to do this, I suppose. But man, do I love watching these things fly ...

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you, Lorenzo. I am sure that I will find opportunities to squeeze in more information about the speedbar as time goes on. I will say that the Dudek Warp manual does inform owner's that the fastest setting is trimmed out and speedbar applied. It does not advise against it. That said, I can see where the trouble lies.

    • @lorenzomallegni663
      @lorenzomallegni663 4 роки тому

      Anthony Vella yes i mean most of the advanced gliders don’t like using speedbar with trims all way closed, always open at least partially the trims while using the bar, I know that the warp is full pk risers so you don’t have this problem, it will open trims automatically when you push the bar, but a lot of gliders out there doesn’t.

    This is a fun video! I hope to get in to Paramotoring one day. I fly Free-Flight now, and the speed bar is very similar.
    As "Free-Flight Pilots", we don't have a motor to push us through the air, so having the ability to speed up, is critical to safety in flight. There have been many times, I have flown "Off-Bar", where my wing has been nearly stationary in the sky. This can be a dangerous situation, especially if you are over "Unfriendly" terrain. I can see that for a PPG, adding a speed-bar would be a ton of fun! Great video @Anthony

  • @DZig
    @DZig 3 роки тому

    I did enjoy this video, however i do take issue of your analogy of a fixed wing vs paraglider . Speed is attitude, and throttle is altitude. That is true in any fixed wing flying machine. So from level flight at 50% power (requiring a slightly nose up attitude, or the use of flaps, or both) to full throttle will result in a climb, with an initial speed increase, but then will slow back down into the climb and (presumably) stabilize. All this is dependant upon many factors, but the concept is the same . Speed is attitude (pitch up, slow down, pitch down speed up) and altitude is throttle. Thanks for the excellent video.

    • @AnthonyVella

      Totally! As mentioned, start high! Anticipate a collapse when starting (though it’s incredibly unlikely). Either way, just give yourself the room. Set the trims slow and give it a whirl. Don’t use brakes when speedbar is extended... just tip steering. 😁😁😁

    On paragliders -- the rule of thumb is don't touch the brakes when you're on speedbar. Use rear riser steering. I'm hoping you checked the manual on your glider (dudek warp 18) before trying this. I guess tip steering is similar to rear riser steering on a ppg wing. It looks like the lines on the rear edge are still being deformed in a number of shots in the video, while on bar.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому +1

      12:45 Exactly! As mentioned, only use the tip steering system when the speedbar is engaged. Because the tip steering is not on a dedicated pulley, its very challenging to avoid some very small amount of input/deformation on the trailing edge. Still, I do my best to avoid it and I believe that it is enough to keep me safe. This Dudek Warp comes with 2D steering installed and I've not heard of anyone configuring the glider so that the TST operates separate of the brake lines. All in all, you're 100% correct.

    Hi Anthony,
    I enjoyed your video, but as a Cessna pilot who owns a 172, I can tell you top speed is about 151 mph if you have the 180 hp upgrade ... at 190 mph, the wings would probably pop off! Most Cessna 172s have a top speed of about 130 mph. FYI, I got my start flying powered paramotors in the late 1990s but I've been out of it for about 20 years now. Looks like a lot of positive changes have occurred in the technology and I'd like to get back into it one day. Take care and be safe! :)

    Nice video Anthony, I'd be interested in learning more about your training and learning process on bar. Did you only start with it on the warp or did you start on your universal. I'm still on an A so the bar is pretty benign but I love using it over trims for all the reasons you said, mainly quick to deploy and undeploy.

    Awsome video! I'm guessing to say your gonna need more than an Atom 80 to really play like a fighter pilot down low. :) Watching you and Mitch, looks thrilling as heck.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому +1

      Exactly my friend! I don’t think the Atom 80 would work well at all in flying low with speedbar. Not enough power to maintain level flight with bar engaged.

    Tony, what about wind-sheer, heated air, etc... Flying so low could be hard to correct?

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому

      These are all great things to be mindful of weather using speedbar or not. Wind sheers are typically found above the altitudes range that I am flying within (at least in this area). As for heated air, I fly before the ground gets heated by the sun. A fun fact that I learned a while back is that the sun does very little to heat the air. Rather, it is the sun that heats the ground that then heats the air. As witnessed in this video, and most of my other videos, I fly first thing in the morning.
      The greatest thing about using speedbar (as opposed to trims) is that, should you take a collapse, the speedbar can be released instantaneously. Doing so will bring the glider back to its "fastest recovery" setting. Lastly, as mentioned in the beginning and end of the video, fly high. There is risk to fly low like this. For me, the risk is worth the reward of flowing along with the desert topography. I should also note that I am extremely particular about when I fly. I almost exclusively fly when there is little to no bumps in the air. I hope this helps!

    I think airplane and paramotor have the same principles of flight, when you trottle up you will increase speed and you have to make an adjustment to keep level flight.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому +2

      Right. I’m just point out that increasing the throttle has a negligible effect on the airspeed of the paramotor when it has a much greater effect on a fixed wing aircraft. Granted, both need to be re-trimmed to maintain altitude after making adjustments to the thrust (just not to the same extent on the fixed wing).

    • @555slam
      @555slam 4 роки тому

      They use the same principles, but the main difference is that the airplane has an elevator and stab trim to maintain level flight when you increase power. The paramotor has no pitch control to counter speed with, rather using power primarily for pitch. Other than adjusting trim and using the speed bar, I think of a paramotor wing as a "constant speed" wing. That one fact made flying these things click for me when I started. (have thousands of hours in fixed wing aircraft)

      Speed increase = decrease of induce drag But an increase in parasitic drag!

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому

      @@ATECZephyr There are different types of parasitic drag; form/profile, skin friction, and interference. Form drag is reduced. You're right. But I don't imagine most people would appreciate, or have the patience, for a complete breakdown on the physics of induced drag and the several components of parasitic drag. lol. The take away I hope people consider the most is how reducing the angle of attack reduces the form drag as it is the strongest form of parasitic drag.

    • @michaelregish5079
      @michaelregish5079 4 роки тому

      In many fixed wing planes, without changing trim, you will actually slow down. This is due to extra airflow over the horizontal stabilizer driving the tail down and increasing climb angle even more than just maintaining the trim speed.

    Not a question about a speed bar but why not put your paramotor in the truck's bed instead of the tray? Just seems like it'd be safer in the bed.

    The angle of attack equals the chord line dependant on the relative angle of the pilot to the parallel metric version on angle between the parallax quandary flight characteristics of the line tension. That's all you need to know.

    • @AnthonyVella
      @AnthonyVella  4 роки тому

      Thanks Gary! And totally a valid concern. If the motor quit that low on speedbar, I'd immediately release the speedbar. This would give me a boost in height that would grant me a last chance to land gracefully. There is always the possibility that I want have a decent option, but this is the risk that I accept.

    This is a fantastic video!
    As someone who is unfamiliar with paramotoring, it seems to me like altering the leading edge of the wing especially at a higher speed would increase the possibility of it “tucking” under. Is that the case, or is there still a large margin of safety with the speedbar fully deployed?
    I think I need to learn to fly one of these soon!
