I come back to this video every year. Andrew was the one person on AGT that I was such a huge fan of but understood the social anxiety and why he didn’t come back. I was so proud of him going up there and belting his heart out. For representing those of us too afraid to do something like this. I was very young when he first went on but I absolutely loved him and remember him to this day.
Far too often people are judged on looks alone. "Judging the book by the cover". I myself have been guilty of this but something a few years ago changed me profoundly forever. An old man who chose to keep pretty much to himself other than an occasional hello was called a hermit,bum,deadbeat,nutcase,etc. I would often offer him a ride rain or shine but he'd say "that's alright,appreciate it" and go on. When he died a cousin who had kept up with him and stayed in touch with him over the years listed his obituary in the local paper when he died. He had never told anyone of his past or his service to his country. 4 tours in Vietnam,Distinguished Service Cross,Silver Star (3),Bronze Star(5),Purple Hearts(4),Soldiers Medal(2),Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. R.I.P. "Sarge. I was privileged to have ever been in his presence the few times I was.
He's amazing, and he realy is good at things, he's a great singer, his audition is like the best audition I've ever seen, never judge anyone at his look, I love his style
The look on his face when he's done... can you imagine having a moment like this captured on hd film. He can look back to this EPIC moment at any point in his life and just remember.
THIS is talent. I feel like all we get on AGT anymore is the same magician, singer, dancer, etc that are all pretty good, but most climb aboard the pity bus and honk the horn loud for all to hear. This guy is original. He surprised us all with his uniqueness, which is something you won't typically find on some everyday TV show. Sure, I love AGT, but I have to admit 90% of the contestants should all either tryout for the Voice or So You Think You Can Dance or something. AGT is for SHOCKING talents that you don't see all the time. Sorry for the speech....
The subversion of expectations is an excellent tactic, as it provides a way to stand out and causes a mental 180. He also uses a little humility/self-pity here to gain sympathy from the audience. Not making judgements, just observing. It works.

Nine years later and it’s still so crazy. He didn’t realize he represented a lot of us with his one voice and that’s the best part.
