I feel like Barzini was the greater mastermind:
    1) He came a lot closer to killing Vito then Roth came to killing Michael.
    2) He killed an active Wartime Don for the Corleones (Sonny).
    3) Barzini’s fight WAS strictly business, whereas Ruth’s was personal.
Side note: Barzini was never fighting against Michael. It was always Vito. Even in death, Vito had laid the plans and groundwork for Michael to enact. So in essence, Barzini lost to a greater stratetician (Vito) then Roth ( vs Micheal).

Apples & oranges, inside man & outside man - like Tony Soprano & Hesh Rabkin. One thing that did impress me about Roth was his modest house in Miami, where he lived on a pension & dined on tuna sandwiches. Granted the charade helped keep the IRS at bay, but his calculated humility also served to make him nonthreatening to the dangerous mafiosi he did business with. Contrast his boastful, impulsive, shortsighted friend Moe Green.
But Roth fell short of mastermind in Cuba, where he completely misread the political landscape, tying himself to Batista & assuming Castro was just another rebel in the Latin American “blood.” He should’ve done what he did stateside, making himself useful to both sides. I think it was losing his Havana interests (not Moe’s deserved death) that made him desperate enough to move against Michael, perhaps aiming to take over his Nevada gambling properties to replace the Cuban casinos, which eventually led to his demise.
As long as Roth was making money for all his partners he was safe. When it became a zero sum game he was in danger, with no blood or ethnic family to protect him. He was guarded by the US government, but as Michael shrewdly noted, they couldn’t even save a president.

The greatest achievement of being a gangster is staying out of prison and staying alive. In reality that is near impossible

I just Saying That if Moe Green Never would have Died in THE first Godfather movie. Then Moe Green would have been taken hyrman Roth side in A Gangster war Against Bazini without questions.
