This video is about the lost battlefield of Glenmama, a large and important battle in Irish history, where the Irish under Brian Boru fought the Irish of Leinster and the Dublin Vikings, which was a prelude to the more famous battle of Clontarf fifteen years later. However the location of the battle was never recorded and it’s location is open to interpretation, I have visited three sites and look for your feedback as to what you think is the best “fit” for it. I hope you enjoy it. Also bear in mind, I am not a historian and make these videos for entertainment purposes only.

Notes: A local man of the Dunlavin area, said to me; he knew of only the “valley of the dogs” in relation to the battle ( where I took the drone footage) in relation to the "valley of the Black Pig” mentioned by Father Shearman. The record of Sitric's presence at the battle are not clear, but his brother Harald ( commander of the Viking forces) was killed, he is recorded as “Aralt” in the annals.
All footage of re-enactment/drone etc. is my own work with exception to the photo attributions as below;

Greetings from Ireland! Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland.This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about thier "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe, I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.

Brittas was the scene of a bloody battle around the year 430, when the Leinstermen ambushed the High King and his army, who were returning to Tara with a herd of stolen (tribute) cattle. The king had been released unharmed the previous year, when he gave his word that he would not return. In my childhood, locals avoided the Slade road after dark. The surname "Dungan" is still to be found in Saggart.The Dungans were kings of Leinster, inaugurated on nearby Lyons hill.
Amazing!! Really need to look that up.
@@IrishMedievalHistory The Dungans were the progenitors of the O'Byrnes and the O'Tooles, who were major land-holders in the area, until dispossessed by the Normans. There were Dungans and O'Tooles in Saggart school with me in the early 60s., but strangely, no O'Byrnes.
@@martinwade9421 dated an O'Byrnes girl alright in university. Some very amazing memories with her.
@@IrishMedievalHistory I married one.
Hi there! Great video! I tried to access the pictures through the links in the description, but I am afraid links are broken. Let me know if you can restore them please. Thanks!
Im sure he made the same deals between his brothers, but I didn't get to witness them.
I think Brittas would be the best place due to the strategic positioning.
It's difficult to choose as they all have valid reasons, surely the battle would have been called the battle of Dunlavin if the first, if the 2nd surely called battle of utereacht(sorry butchered that -the monastery!) personally I'd go with the last choice, Has there being any modern Archaeological investigations done on any of these sites, rather then depending on old victorian methods and finds as context wasn't high on their agenda more like grave robbers really sadly.
I always heard they were pirates/sea raiders
And tons of them in the Irish sea.
As for the collar of gold 😜🙄 sure it is.
