I love Maastricht, I have only been there twice in my life, because for somebody from "boven de rivieren" it is far away (for Dutch standards at least, I know most Americans would say it is next door). I love how the city is so unique compared to the cities in the north, not being totally flat, not the canal structure you often see in the north and with a beautiful square and church. In a way it feels un-Dutch and if the people want they also can speak a form of Dutch "waar geen touw aan vast te knopen is". :) But usually they don't do that to non Maastrichtenaren, because I found the people to be very kind and hospitable.

The true Dutch experience: Getting stranded on a train station somewhere when it's slightly freezing. It's a good thing you were stranded in such a wonderful city ❤
When my wife and I lived in Brunssum we would visit Maastricht and Aachen. The Christmas markets were one of our favorite things to visit. In my opinion nothing beats the holiday season in the Netherlands and neighboring countries.
Dear Michelle and Alex, Great video again! I loved it because I was born in Maastricht. Café Sjiek is special. The owner was a schoolfriend of mine. I advice you to go back to Maastricht for a third time on the 11th of February to watch the Great Carnaval Parade. It's wonderful!

in onze eerste maastricht filmpje aten we zuurvlees met paard, maar in deze video de zuurvlees heeft met rundvlees gekookt. ik vind liever zuurvlees met paard, denk ik!
In world war 2 there was heavy fighting betwwrn German an U.S. troops in and around Aken. Aken was an important bridge head into Germany and a lot of young Anerican lives were lost here. Those young men lost their lives for the freedom of Europe and large part of the world. I'm not frpm Maastricht or the Limburg province but a good (lady)friend told me that Zuurvlees was originaly made from horse meat. Limburg had a lot of coal mines and they used horses for transpirtation ondergruond. The sad thing is that these horses only saw daylight at the end of their werking life just before being butchered. The horse meat was cheap so ideal for the poor miners. Of course in the early 20th century horses went obsolete in the mines and replacement by machinery.and people started to use pork as an infredient for zuurvlees. After the discovery of natural gas in the province of Groningen coal became obsolete The last coal mine was closed in the early 1970's.
Pineapple on pizza is a Canadian creation (c.1954), so the fact that I had it today (shortly before watching your video), is just patriotic and not at all controversial. I'm familiar with the Valkenburg market (though I've never been) so I'm looking forward to next week's video
Just don't go for the "water konijn" in Belgium restaurants -> that is rat. However you can eat: kop kaas |(head cheese) in Belgium, it means smegma in the Netherlands but in Belgium it is actually cheese.
I think that if it wasn't for television people would speak more dialect in the border regions. On the Dutch side people watch Dutch TV, and German on the German side.
Fun fact, German proficiency used to be relatively higher near the border because the only channels were Netherlands 1/2/3 and Germany 1/2/3. Whereas further towards the coast they couldn't receive the German channels.
@@dykam I think it's a great miss that we don't see as much German, French and Spanish TV with Dutch subtitles on our televisions. For children that would be a great help. I learned English from the TV. I've never had to study for it. It always came naturally.

that’s where we got the liege waffle in this video! (and where we had our first vlaai in the last maastricht video…) so good! and you might be right about valkenburg 😉 that’s next saturday’s video!
That's what's nice about Germany, having to carry money with you and not having internet access and having a nice sausage sandwich or curry sausage and all the beautiful castles along the river!
Still don't understand the problem with pineapple on pizza. There are plenty of dishes that have strange variations yet the pineapple somehow did something wrong 🙂. I love luikse wafels. Even the cheaper ones from the store taste grate after a short heating in the microwave.
Just when i thought you have great taste in food you tell us that Alex likes pineapple on pizza? Alex is crazy. But i am happy that you like vlaai. If you would talk shit about vlaai, i would have you deported 😜. Also happy you like zuurvlees. Zuurvlees (and friet) is a nice warm meal in the cold Dutch winter. ❤❤❤
I prefer a pizza hawai over a pizza salami or peperoni. There are better pizza's but all is personal preference. Never heard of a pizza n'duja though, sounds interesting.
I live close to Maastricht but wouldn't want to live there my parents wil remove me from their will as will my grandparents mostly because, like most people in limburg, we aren't the biggest fans of the people in Maastricht it's a long, complicated story I live in a small village south of Maastricht. I lived my whole life in the south of limburg
Cash is King in Germany, and in all honesty I like it better even though everything I buy in the Netherlands is with bankcard. I actually like the transaction itself better.
You said that the language changed when you went to Aachen, but actually, people from Maastricht and Aachen can understand each other very well, because the local dialect is almost the same, whereas if someone from Groningen would speak his local dialect, he would not be understood in Maastricht. (or anywhere else in the Netherlands, for that matter). I also hope you have learned not to rely on trains in the Netherlands. Since privatization, all public transport is hopeless in the Netherlands. The train from Aachen to Maastricht was supposed to go on to Liege from this month, but Belgium is deliberately stalling because they do not want a private railway company in their country. They also insist that all Dutch traindrivers must speak French, and that is not a language most Dutch can speak.
Very nice video on Maastricht and Aachen but sincerely do not mention the city of Liège in your title if you have not been there, it is completely normal to have problem with the means of transport but I think that a alternative would have been possible around 30km between Maastricht and Liège. I find it quite a shame to ignore a city which deserves better treatment in this video, although currently the city is in full metamorphosis with the construction of a tram, it has an exceptional heritage and a local gastronomy recognized. Anyway this is my opinion.
If you are at the Christmas market in Valkenburg. Say hi to my boss😂 he is over there at the market in the caves nearby the entrance. Good Luck over there. My boss is a big guy with Grey hair and walks slowly. Nice down to earth guy. Have fun in Valkenburg. It is very pretty amd cant wait to see your video about it. Maybe i can get a clinch of him
Maastricht-liege-aachen was probaly way better. There is direct train from liege too Aachen and for your way back there is a train from Aachen too Heerlen where the intercity too Eindhoven starts.
I really don't like pizza myself, however, the only GOOD pizza you can have is in Italy, period! And I am NOT even mentioning the other food in that country which is absolutely GREAT................btw...........did you know that the Italians don't want any McDonalds along the highways because they think it is otherly crap???!! Thumbs up, love your vlogs!
Mushrooms don't belong in real authentic Zuurvlees (chuck roast, vinegar, unions, caster sugar, laurel, clove, gingerbread, apple syrup, salt, pepper, butter and water)( the real, real authentic zuurvlees is made with horsemeat!)! And the Rijstvlaai (Rice pie) is more authentic than the Puddingvlaai met kruimels!
People who order those salty tasteless cardboard disks at big pizza chains have no business in complaining about pineapple on pizza’s. Enjoy your Hawaii.
Rijstevlaai and kruisbessenvlaai I like the most as a vlaai flavor. Apart from zuurvleisch ofc. Did you visit the bookstore inside of the church next to het vrijthof? And pineapple on pizza? Nope, Nope, Nope not for me. Rather eat 'plain' prosciutto. Aachen - Maastricht is really easy to visit both as you get to experience. Good timing too with christmas markets everywhere now. Did you try gluwhein? I rather have a German beer but that food looked delicious to me! And I can't ignore a good pretzel. Next weekend I go to Charles Dickens fest in Deventer. Enjoy waiting in the queue for 2 hours but that is worth your wait because you will get to travel back in time nearby de Walstraat. Been there before and still enjoy it! You will too next year.

Cash is King in Germany, and in all honesty I like it better even though everything I buy in the Netherlands is with bankcard. I actually like the transaction itself better.
For every Pizza Hawaï an authentic old Italian pizza baker dies, so if it isn’t five stars it isn’t enough to the costs.
but how will know if it’s five stars if i don’t eat it?! this is the textbook definition of a quagmire!
Maybe i can get a clinch of him
we were there but last sunday unfortunately!
@@buncharted when does the video come
next saturday!
Maastricht-liege-aachen was probaly way better. There is direct train from liege too Aachen and for your way back there is a train from Aachen too Heerlen where the intercity too Eindhoven starts.
I hope you left those countries something to eat...you know with Christmas around the corner.
Ik heb trek.
Haha soooo tangy😂
Make sure you distinguish a from aa. You murging/mixing them is slightly confusing.😅
vlak bij mij 😁
Pineapple on pizza is the best. I will die on that hill.
😉😊😊
Guys! Your saying zeurvlees hahaha. Is zUUrvlees! But i know its hard to pronounce, no hard feelings haha 🤓
If you included France and Luxembourg on your trip you got 5
we will skip sleeping next time 😂
You can actually visit all three countries in one minute...
Mushrooms don't belong in real authentic Zuurvlees (chuck roast, vinegar, unions, caster sugar, laurel, clove, gingerbread, apple syrup, salt, pepper, butter and water)( the real, real authentic zuurvlees is made with horsemeat!)! And the Rijstvlaai (Rice pie) is more authentic than the Puddingvlaai met kruimels!
the mushrooms are in the vol au vin, not the zuurvlees :)
Never say ‘ik heb honger’….. You should say ‘ik heb trek’.
Use ‘hungry’ only in serious situations.
Earlier you probably did these three countries in one minute...
our germany experience was much different at the drielandenpunt - it’s just a forest! 😂
People who order those salty tasteless cardboard disks at big pizza chains have no business in complaining about pineapple on pizza’s. Enjoy your Hawaii.
❤️❤️❤️
Peek a pot lewd
i love your channel so much. makes me happy that i was born here. had to unsubscribe when you said you love pineapple on pizza though :(
hey thank you!
Pineapple on pizza? Now I have to unsubscribe because I cannot in good conscience support such behavior ;)
don’t hate it til you’ve tried it!!! 😂
You will too next year.
we went to the bookstore in our first maastricht video! and yes, the food in maastricht is next level 🥰
tête de veau it's veal
