  • Is there a NEW KING on the throne when it comes to Ultra-Light headlamps? The NU25 (2017) has been the KING since the release and is the most popular headlamp for UL-Hikers at only 30 grams body only and with a DYI headband at 36 grams. But now since the release of a very similar but IMPROVED product from SUNBLESA, the H11... the NU25 it is truly challenged!
Will the NU25 hold the throne or loose it to its contender, let’s find out!

Micro usb is a deal breaker for me. I got the nu-25 mostly because of the usb-c. Going forward, it is usb-c or bust for all my electronics (home and camping), and high speed usb-c cables to connect them. Overall, a nice video one the new headlight. NU25 isn't that great because it's USB only and I've never seen a tree with an USB plug, have you? I prefer Black Diamond or PETZL because both brands offers headlamps with dual power (batteries and rechargeable pack). Another major drawback for the NU25 is its internal battery. It's a very low 650mAh. For comparison, BD pack is 1500mAh and PETZL's Core is 1250mAh.
As for the Sunblesa there are several weak points:
    BRACKET
As state by Robert, the NU25 has a problem with its bracket and Sunblesa made it worst by adding holes. They wanted to make it lighter, butt ended up making it even weaker than the NU25 is already.
    HEADBAND
Rubber band inside???? It will irritate people's skin if they have short hair and will pull up anyways if you have long hair. Others have tried that in the past and it was a disaster. Why do you think no one does it?
    BATTERY
I have to disagree with Robert here. The NU25's battery is 650mHa and the Sunblesa 700mHa. So it won't have much better performance on the long run. Also, it depends on the quality of that battery....
    MICRO-usb????
    Really? No comment...
    BUTTONS/LUMENS
2 lumens for the lower setting is a joke. % lumen should be the minimum. And you have to press 3 seconds to get the full power? What the F*! You'll see that 3 seconds is a long time if you need that power real quick. And it's automatically turning off? My God.... I really hope that no one forced to hike at night will have that headlamp.
Also which "old" NU25 have you used to compare? Some have a 610mAh battery, some 650mAh.
    CONTENT/HIKING
Robert, you just said the 365lumens will automatically shut off after a short period of time. Then later you say that the ability to plug it to a power bank gives you the opportunity to hike for an extended period of time at night! Worst, do you really think anyone will hold high in the air a power bank next to his head while hiking?? Saying this makes you sound like a sell-out just saying whatever he's been told to or reading, blindly, their web site.
    LIES
"It has a higher action lumen than the NU25". sorry to say that, but you just lost all credit here. FYI, the Nitecore NU25 as an output of 400lumens where the Sunblesa has 360 lumens. And if you compare with the old, discontinued NU25, that NU25 has 350lumens. Do you REALLY think 10 lumens makes a difference? As for the green light, who cares? It's just a marketing gimmick
    VERDICT
You keep comparing the Sunblesa to the OLD NU25 and this intentionally. This is wrong and how do you expect to get any credibility on UA-cam? People are not dumb and have obviously access to the Web so they'll see where the truth is.
    Sunblesa has 365lumes, NU25 400 lumens
NU25 has a weak bracket, Sunblesa has an even weaker one because of the holes.
Sunblesa added RUBBER inside their headband and it will be VERY uncomfortable. You did't use that lamp at all, or not much to avoid mentioning that.
Robert, you seem to be a nice guy and have a great talent at making videos! But the keyword if you want to succeed on UA-cam is: CONTENT. So you need to have a perfect content otherwise you'll remain one of those numerous small channels that will disappear sooner or later. You need to be more thorough. Like in this video to mention to which NU25 you compared since the batteries are NOT the same. Also, you need to test it for REAL and not just read specs that anyone can do. And when it comes to any lamp, you need to use a specialized device to mesure the lumens over time. Because the lamp may still be powered after a certain time, but it's lumen output will be lower (or higher) than other one. Last, you need to make the right comparisons. Again, the new NU25 has 400 lumens so the Sunblesa is NOT better and the old NU@5 has 250 lumens, and 10 lumens won't make much difference.
Be more thorough with your content. And the best is to use a spreadsheet when you're making a comparison and add ALL data before making a video. I'd show you an example, but your channel doesn't allow to put a link in the comments.

Hi there 👋🏻 thanks for a long comment even if it’s a somewhat hard and negative one.
Bracket) well the NU25 (2017) is the one with the holes so 🤷🏼‍♂️ if that is your case the H11 is better. I said I believed them to be similar.
Headband) I never use a headband without a hat/cap/beanie so when it comes to the rubber I don’t mind it. A lot of headbands comes with this feature including Nitecore. It’s more of a personal preference I believe.
Battery) well it is bigger so 🤷🏼‍♂️ and have longer runtimes.
Micro usb) I don’t mind that so don’t really think of it much but I know a lot of people do. Sunblesa if you read the comments will upgrade the H11 soon with a USBC. 👍🏻
Buttons/lumens) don’t understand your comments here and both the new and old NU25 does the same. These small ones have a little bit of overheating problem. Bad yea sure, not a good feature that’s for sure.
Content/lies/verdict well… I clearly stated I compare the old NU25 and the 2017 version NOT the gen2. Why, well because that’s the one I use and the one I believe still to be the best UL choice. Might be discontinued but, still available on Amazon for example.
When it comes to the power bank/still hiking I totally agree… sorry for that and that is one of the downsides I forgot to mention. Even if is possible to use it while charging the charging port should be placed on the side otherwise the cable is in the way. You could turn it upside down for a while but yea… a clear downside.
Again, the comparison what’s between the old NU25 and the H11 so no lies here and how I perform my tests and why is up to me and what type of videos I make. I will never buy equipment to try it in a lab… I go out and test them on the trail, go for a long walk and record in the dark to see the differences to be as much like real life as possible.
We are all different and I respect your comments and thoughts even if I don’t agree on all points.
      Stay safe//Robert

Dear Friend, I highly appreciate your detailed and very valuable feedback. You are a really very reliable and serious user.
At present Sunblesa headtorch is an ultralight version. Black Diamond storm and Petzl Core is a bigger/heavier type.
We also have the plan to make a dual power headtorch in following days. However if you compare brightness/Spot beam distance of Sunblesa and Black Diamond, Petzl Core, you will find Sunblesa headtorch is very close to these models. Compared to Petzl Bindi,Sunblesa headtorch will have much better performance.
      BRACKET
Sunblesa 's no hole.We took some methods to improve the bracket. At present, no user complained about this problem. And Sunblesa will continue to upgrade and improve this point in following months.
      HEADBAND
Many runners and users suggested adding rubber on the headband. There are many brand headbands with rubber or without rubber.
      BATTERY
Sunblesa battery spec.700Mah with special material. true performance is the same as normal 800mah battery.
      MICRO-usb????
Really? No comment... The Type C model will be released in following months.
      Buttons/Lumens
Sunblesa low white 2 lumens has 4-5meters spot beam distance. In fact,it's not too dark.
      CONTENT/HIKING
Max white brightness 365 Lumens will keep 30 seconds then back to high white 190-200lumens.
High white light mode spot beam distance 55meters more.Meet user's needs most of the time.
If there is little power,Sunblesa headtorch will keep dim model 45-3hours' reserve time. So hikers/users have time to prepare.
      LIES
Would you like to test and review Sunblesa Headtorch in future? I believe Sunblesa headtorch will surprise you.
      VERDICT
Sunblesa headtorch with much bigger reflector than most models. Even with the same brightness 100lumens,a bigger reflector headtorch will have much better performance. 365 or 400 lumens, it's a very close brightness. We are testing Sunblesa headtorch with Black Diamond Storm 400. And finding there is not much difference. Black Diamond Storm 400 performance is a little better.
Basically, both head torches ' performances are very close on white light brightness.
Mr.Robert tested Sunblesa headtorch several weeks then released a review video.
If you are interested, we warmly welcome you to test and review Sunblesa headtorch. Then giving us all weak points. So that we improve and upgrade in future days. There is no perfect product. But we can upgrade and improve and let Sunblesa headtorch become better.
Again, I highly appreciated your long, detailed, serious words for Sunblesa headtorch.
All these words are very important for us.
      Wish you everything goes smoothly!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
      Best regards.

      @@Sunblesa Hey Gavin!
I'll start by saying that more competition is always a good thing. Second, everything is a question of trade-off when it comes to the outdoors. Take for example the amazing BRS tiny stove. It's very very ultra light and doesn't cost much. But it can get flimsy at times *sigh*
      This being said:
"Black Diamond storm and Petzl Core is a bigger/heavier type" but they also have ultra light versions.
      Brightness/Spot beam distance
I praise your honesty for saying your headlamp doesn't match theirs, BUT is close. And often "close" is good enough. People tend to focus too much on distance but they forget they'll use those headlamps in the....forest, and not on open water ;)
      BRACKET
Your sales are certainly not the same as Black Diamond's that's why the POSSIBLE "manufacturing weaknesses" will take more time to be reported. It's good to know that you'll work on that very soon. See, the BD Spot and Storm are very good headlamps and have a much better weather protection than PETZL. However, the serious problem with the bracket ruins everything. They also made a big mistake with the rechargeable pack since you need to buy the battery AND an external charger. Guess what is the item people forget the most at hotels/motels/campgrounds/etc..? Yep... chargers. There's no excuse for that since PETZEL offers the Core since a very long time. BD rushed and cut corners... Also, BD's headlamps are smaller but would you believe the weight is the same as the PETZL Actik Core? They are saved by lots of money into Marketing and nice colors....
      HEADBAND
Those people like to suffer! lol But if there's enough demand, then why not? And why not selling the Sunblesa with a regular headband and offer the one with rubber as an option for a few $ more? Everyone will be happy and you'd see if the rubber version is worth it (financially wise).
      BATTERY
"Sunblesa battery spec.700Mah with special material. true performance is the same as normal 800mah battery."
That, I'd need to see tests from an independent and certified lab to believe. Batteries are regulated by several norms and you're the first one to say its 700mAh performs as good as an 800mAh. Also, does your battery meets the BS EN 60086-4:2000, IEC 60086-4:2000 and the BS EN 60086-4:1996, IEC 60086-4:1996 standards? Same for the UN/DOT 38.3 5th Edition, Amendment 1, IEC 62133-2:2017, UL 2054 2nd Edition?
The battery is one thing, but the electronic circuits, and the LED also plays an important role in the performance. For example, you can have a very good battery in a lamp using a low grade LED. And that lamp will last longer than those with a high grade LED. HOWEVER, the LO (Lumen Output) will be very low. Also, how fast the battery is discharging when used with a specific lamp? The only way to know is to use a photovoltaic device (LUX meter) and record the numbers at regular intervals. Some will say their lamp will last X hours at maximum output, but the reality is that the lumen output will not be maxed near the end, maybe even way sooner. A LUX meter will do the job for basic results.
TYPE-C released in the following months?
I feel an upcoming sale for the actual ones :) That "micro-usb" was a ...hmmm how to say it nicely? A temporary miscalculation decision? ;)
      2 LUMENS
It is still much lower than 5 lumens. I just checked my personal spreadsheet and Storm, Spot and PETZL all have 6 lumens minimum. However, 5 is good enough. It's also a marketing decision here. Way too low, compared to the leading brands, will have a negative effect on your sales. I dare you to put two same headlamps next to each other, one at 2lm and the other at 5lm and say that you prefer 2lm ;) Go for 5 guys. That shouldn't change your cost anyways.
      MAX LUMEN LIMITATION
"Meets user's needs most of the time"
This is where you're making a "MM" (Market Mistake). Ultra-Light hikers is a niche market and some companies don't see the big picture.
You'd be surprised by how many people are using headlamps. Take for example hunters and fishermen. They have to carry tons of gear, so whatever weight they can save is more than welcomed! This also applies to workers in several industries, people working backstage, etc... Anyone hiking at night will HATE the feature shutting down the max lumen output after 30 seconds. Have you talked to a REAL UL hiker? Like one of the "three crowners"? Those guys will go as far as to cut the sleeping pad and heat-seal it half the size and use their backpack under their legs. they will eat cola-soaked meals just to save a fraction of an once with the cat-can-stove. *A real UL hiker wakes up around 4:30am.* Why? Because this is when the night gets colder (4:30-5:30). They do that so they can have a lighter sleeping pad and will walk during those hours to stay warm. UL may not like much your lamp... Same for the woodsmen, etc... This is a safety concerns. Now will the circuits overheat? I don't know. If yes, find a solution and get a BIG reward! ;)
      REVIEW
I like someone who has the b*lls to say something like that. Why not? I'll contact you in a moment.
      REFLECTOR
A bigger reflector gives a better spread, but less focus. Again, it's always a question of trade-off. Some manufacturers offers a dual-beam to cover all angles. But it means more LED, bigger casing and sometimes even more weight. Damn trade-off! LOL Again, I really appreciate to see you having the HONESTY to say that Storm 400 has a better performance, but not much. People/Companies like you deserves attention...
      BOTTOM LINE
I'll contact you in private. Your Honesty, your attitude and the way to address every single fact, point by point deserves praises.
      THE...BEST HEADLAMP...
      - costs less than $5
      - have a 158,763mAh in a tiny housing.
      - weight less than 20 grams.
      Now, in the real world:
      - DUAL battery operation (disposable/rechargeable)*
      - FIVE lumens minimum, ok? not 2...5.
      - Dimmer: meaning to be able to adjust the lumens between the presets
      - last setting memory
      - battery lock
      - good battery (one that last for real)
      - good casing (not like BD's: SERIOUS issues...)
      - good weather resistance (PETZL s*cks at that)
      - possibility to buy replacement headband
      - regular headband included, rubber as an option (extra $)
      * BEST OF BOTH worlds is an invaluable asset. "I'm never stuck!" is always good and is a very good selling point. The problem with the USB-only headlamps is that you have to recharge. Yes, a power pack is good. But today, everything needs a power pack so people end up having to buy a bigger and heavier one all the time. So the REAL weight gain is, sometimes, minimal if not non-existent. Serious hikers, Special Forces, Nordic Explorers,etc.. are all paying close attention to that.
      TECH vs TREND
All this being said. There's also the economic equation here. Big companies are spending millions to advertise many gizmos just to lure new customers. Is it working? Of course! That's why smaller companies are, sometimes, forced to follow the trends. BUT... there's always a BUT called "Black Sheep" and also the BUT called "Wise Guys". A name? Agawa Canyon. The giant Browning had a folding saw that was pretty good but they discontinued it. Less than 24 months later Agawa Canyon came up with a similar folding saw called BOREAL 21. It was bigger (Browning's one was too small) and they focused on the hikers and Bushcrafter. That folding saw is today the biggest success of its kind, and sold worldwide. You see it everywhere on UA-cam. This, thanks to Browning's limited vision with that product. Smart Black Sheep outsmarted Giant-Browning and now it's too late for them to come back.
      FINAL WORD
There are very few market segments other than the outdoors where a small company can have a big, if not a huge success vs the giants. And that's good for the customers over that! This is why I believe that if you manage to address a few points, and maybe to have a second model, then you might be able to have a very very nice Xmas real soon :)
P.S. I posted here because I thought it could be interesting for some to know a little more about how the outdoor business works. If not, don't hesitate to throw tomatoes and eggs at me. I'll cook them during my next camping trip :D
P.S. #2 If you start a business, take example on Gavin. He has a good attitude and open to discussion. (ok, now Gavin you owe me a bottle of wine for that one! lol joke)

Ultralight is not just about light weight, its also about simplicity for me, carrying several cables is a non-starter. Flextail is about to release the 1.2oz pump, I LOVE the idea behind it, but the battery inside kills my excitment for it. The only rechargeable batteries I have seen for it are micro USB. Micro USB is going to be a hard pass for me.
I really wish companies decided to pair down the bloat and gimmicks on gear and gave us simple, reliable, lightweight and practical.
For example: I dont need 15 light modes on a headlamp, just low med high and a red light, maybe an emergency strobe if you are REALLY pushing it, you could just as easy turn the light on or off, or simply cover and uncover it to signal.
Companies would save on complexity and lightweight means they would save on material.
I am most definitely sure a company could get me to buy a new headlamp, but this one aint it chief.

You can use an USB rechargeable ARCR123Z with the new Flextail pump. As for the features of the headlamp, whatever the light modes doesn't affect the weight. It's all electronics and programming. More or less features won't change the weight.

Correction. The red light is to preserve your night vision and to avoid blinding someone if you look at them. Red light has been used for ages. The green light is just a gimmick marketing trick (some even have green, orange, yellow). They say it makes SOME features to look better at night but the reality is ... who cares? I'll join the USB-C train, though i have a single cable with little adapters attached to it. I don't need another cable for mini USB, i just find it to be less durable, more difficult to use, and typically slower to charge.
Specifically for hiking, I cant really complain about the green light. It's not ideal for preserving night vision, red is technically better. So don't take this guy to an astronomy club night or something.
Green does give a better view, but it's also worth noting that it's more visible to people around you. So not ideal if you're trying to keep a low profile either.
Finally, green light can attract some bugs, red is better for that too. It's probably not a big deal for most people, but in a group of 10 people I'm always the one getting eaten alive.
I'll stick to my old Nitecore. If they could make it with a slightly bigger battery, a USB-C port, and maybe a little lighter while not losing durability, I'd be pretty happy.

Hi Roger! I came to your channel today specifically looking for a headlamp :) My current one is just a cheapo from Decathlon, but I'm preparing for a trip where on 1 day I think we would be hiking in the dark for a good 5 hours, including some technical segments definitely venturing into mountaineering (harness, ropes). So definitely I need an extra one as I would like to have backup in case the battery dies/or expect battery to die and needing a 2nd one on the same hike.
ONE question: can you compare how these 2 deal with cold weather? I'd be hiking up to 5,200m! If they're anything like phone or gopro batteries in the cold... I definitely need 2 headlamps.

    • @roberthammenrudh
      @roberthammenrudh  8 місяців тому

Hi 👋🏻… and welcome to the channel! Good questions, since I’m not hiking during winter this is unfamiliar territory for me!
Floodlight 60L for 10h on the new NU25 is perfect for hiking though… rough terrain you can switch to 200L and still have 4h 15m… on the old 2017 you only have 38L for 8h so not perfect if planning for longer hikes in the dark. Same for Sunblesa H11.
So my initial recommendations would be the new NU25 standard do to the better headband or even NU33 for longer burntimes!
How they perform in the cold 🥶 …🤷🏼‍♂️ sorry, at the moment no idea!
