It's nice to see how cautious you were around them. I feel like I see too many videos of people being too comfortable being close to massive animals lol. Truly amazing encounter!
And how dangerous and brutal they are as well. They are a bit like large dogs to us in terms of they are not likely to attack at all, and are far more likely to want to interact with you than harm you but they are still highly dangerous. They can destroy us with sheer ease.

If you're in the water I think it's best to stay calm and not swim away. I have seen that work in a video. If you swim away they might follow you, but it's not likely they will hurt you. Just follow you cause they're curious.

Orcas don't "eat" humans, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't kill humans. They are wild animals after all and could very easily kill a human without meaning to while being playful or curious.

There has never been a reported Orca attack on a human. They are extremely smart animals and just don't see us as food. Sharks seem to mistake us for weals and such, but not Orcas.

Otherwise, I'm keeping a healthy distance until the Orcas themselves tell me what they are thinking.
Exact opposite, that whale was irritated and was herding him out of the area. As nice as wild animals are even if you are close, STAY AWAY FROM THEM when they are just with their children. You seriously run the risk of concerning them and getting attacked. If you ask me, he was about to have his kayak flipped over before it said, "nah, he's retreating anyways forget about it". Killer Whales can be real jerks. You won't catch me out on the ocean with a little kayak, way too dangerous.
I have a 13ft Solo skiff, and I go out 3 days a week. I've seen a pod pass by me only once, in Florida. And I did the same thing. I lifted my outboard and just sat there for an hour. They were around me, under me, and never touched my boat. They're rare here because the water is so warm. They're so beautiful, happy, and where they belong. They'll never hurt you. But I know they like a little space, especially with a baby orca around. And you were moving faster, and I think she was just swimming with you. They swim and jump in the wake of boats, doing 30 to 40 mph. They love that. They've never put a scratch on one human in the wild. They've never touched a kayak. They have killed 4 people in captivity, and the way they are treated, is the reason why. And Sea World should be held responsible for those 4 deaths. Whatever orcas are left, should be returned slowly to their families. They've released two already, and they're doing just fine. At least no whale can ever be taken away again, and they can't breed them in captivity anymore. 🙏 🌊 🐳

I don't know how they keep their skin so clean. If you ever have a next time you should pat the water with your hand they may come right up to you as they've been known to do that. have you heard of Dr Ingrid Visser? She's in NZ waters and is always swimming amongst them. They come right up to her and even give her "food" at times! Obviously they all know her very well.
I cannot begin to imagine what a feeling it is to have these huge - beautiful but intimidating animals within feet of you. And now to learn that off the coast of Portugal; Orcas are dismantling rutters - it could change everything we've known about them. In the whole history of humans on water? Inuit and Vikings have stories of Orca attacks. They are suspected of sinking several sailboats with one confirmed 100% case. A family in the pacific on way to Hawaii.

They're known to use different hunting tactics, exhibit different behaviors and have different diets. Only 1 pod is known to have attacked boats: the one in the Strait of Gibraltar (which I assume you meant; I've seen no reports for this from the Strait Of Magellan). Behavior is taught within pods, but rarely across pods. We're talking about 1 pod that lives in the northeast Atlantic region and orcas are not a planetwide migratory species; in fact, not even all pods migrate. Even if you did mean the Strait of Magellan in the Pacific side of South America, these 2 pods have never even met. There are more pods around the world in different regions around the world that have not exhibited this behavior at all. What I'm also wondering is if these orcas would actually attack humans in the water. They're damaging boats, but we can't even say for a fact it's an attack, since that implies we know their motivation, and we don't. Would they attack humans in the water? I mean, we're not very nutricious for oceanic animals. And if their regular food is in low supply they'd start migrating more randomly (like the Southern Resident orcas have had to do of late) around the southeast Atlantic looking for food and not just start attacking humans.
I watched the viral footage with my mom of orcas swimming along side a woman off the coast of New Zealand. She thinks it looked like they were nudging her back closer to shore. I can say it did look like that in 2 instances, it does look like that's what they were doing. The guy who recorded the footage with a drone mentioned there were at least 2 more orcas a little further off shore. Who knows, maybe they were relying there were sharks nearby. Orcas are one of the species that exhibit benevolence towards humans.
wow that's awesome! these are mostly juveniles coming up to him and checking things out. These animals have obviously done this before. Adults are nearby but they stay back and let the juveniles have their fun. Yep the adults have been there, done that for sure. The females appear to be more curious than the males. Tell you what he knows his Orcas!
You were very respectful of the orcas, giving them their space and not freaking out/frightening or hurting them when they chose to come closer. That is the right balance-keep a respectful distance and knowing when they are coming too close and you need to back away.

That was amazing video. I had a similar experience in Vancouver BC and at first it was like a beautiful religious experience and then it turned to fear as the entire pod surrounded our boat and started smashing their tails on the surface of the water. We got the heck out of there! You did a great job! I have seen several videos now of Orcas capsizing boats.

Not true, Inuit have stories of Orcas causing disappearing tribe members. They are beautiful creatures but they are calculating the risk in making us a meal make no mistake.

Not once in the years of study did any of the indigenous peoples ever claim one of their own went missing or killed due to an orca encounter. As a matter of fact, not only do they get up close and personal with the orca they know exactly what each pod eats, where, and differentiate one pods sounds from another. Thank you for your thoughts. It amazes me that even the juveniles are discipline enough to not get overly curious with kayakers and cause issues, even accidentally(that I'm aware of anyway). If only human juveniles listened to their moms as well.
It's a pedal kayak, underneath there is a fin system that pushes you forward as you pedal with your legs, kind of like a step machine at the gym but your legs and upper body seats in a 90 degrees angle, very comfortable and efficient way to move on water. Speed wise, same as any other wide hull fishing kayak with paddle.

Blablabla! Orcas do not sink boats! The boats sink due to damage on the rudder suspension. Sailingboats under 15 Meter length should protect their rudder one way or another...

Several Sailboats have been rammed by Orcas one on a California to Hawaii passage. The family abandoned ship and the Orca swam around them for a couple hours while in their life raft.
Yep... and males do NOT mate with females of the their pod either how smart is that? I suppose this is why pods get along so well as these animals do NOT fight with one another. well maybe a little...

If he’s only known there has never been an attack on humans by Orcas in recorded history. (Don’t bother pointing to the recent boat rudder-specific interactions by a small pod near Europe. They are most likely juveniles playing rough because they’d been taught by “teenage Orcas” to do so. If they wanted the people on the boats, they are MORE than capable of getting them. If this is insane, my encounter would be really nuts. I'm in 16ft zodiac, sunning myself after dive. Orca comes within inches to me, I scratch his back. He stops, turns an looks at me. I get into water an get hit in back by his mate. She signals for 3 more, having sonar go right through me. Now I'm circled by 5, fin too fin. Changed my life!

Zolindigo, If you ever encounter this again, don't be scared of them even though as humans, we have fear so it's hard not too. If they come close like in the video, it means they are coming to you and you could whistle... Make sure it's high pitch. Just don't ever do it if they don't initiate contact first but, you'll see that they are no harm to humans as they usually reply back to you in a high pitch signal. If you do interact with them, just don't touch them as it's believed to disturb their independence apparently. They are curious as to why you are in the water and will come close to make sure you are okay - plenty of videos where Orcas have swum right close to swimmers to try to guide them back to the shoreline thinking they were too far out😂 The only Orca's known to attack humans are those held in captivity. Wild Orca's will not attack us as we are very similar in intelligence and have very similar birthing and brains. Also, riding away is not a good move. She thinks you're playing. Always stay stationary no matter how big they are.

If this ever happened to me I'd definitely STOP pedaling or moving about just to observe how closely they would approach. She had absolutely no fear of them. This was Mommy with her obvious female offspring. This was off the coast of NZ in December, 2019. She stated that they looked at her eyeball to eyeball a foot away. Also Dr Ingrid Visser also of NZ has had many encounters with them through the years. They've even brought her food as an offering. Its incredible how smart they are.

@@ritcheymt Orcas live in pods, tight-knit family units, around the world. One pod is not the same as the other. They're known to use different hunting tactics, exhibit different behaviors and have different diets. Only 1 pod is known to have attacked boats: the one in the Strait of Gibraltar (which I assume you meant; I've seen no reports for this from the Strait Of Magellan). Behavior is taught within pods, but rarely across pods. We're talking about 1 pod that lives in the northeast Atlantic region and orcas are not a planetwide migratory species; in fact, not even all pods migrate. Even if you did mean the Strait of Magellan in the Pacific side of South America, these 2 pods have never even met. There are more pods around the world in different regions around the world that have not exhibited this behavior at all.
What I'm also wondering is if these orcas would actually attack humans in the water. They're damaging boats, but we can't even say for a fact it's an attack, since that implies we know their motivation, and we don't. Would they attack humans in the water? I mean, we're not very nutricious for oceanic animals. And if their regular food is in low supply they'd start migrating more randomly (like the Southern Resident orcas have had to do of late) around the southeast Atlantic looking for food and not just start attacking humans.

I watched the viral footage with my mom of orcas swimming along side a woman off the coast of New Zealand. She thinks it looked like they were nudging her back closer to shore. I can say it did look like that in 2 instances, it does look like that's what they were doing. The guy who recorded the footage with a drone mentioned there were at least 2 more orcas a little further off shore. Who knows, maybe they were relying there were sharks nearby. Orcas are one of the species that exhibit benevolence towards humans.

wow that's awesome! these are mostly juveniles coming up to him and checking things out. These animals have obviously done this before. Adults are nearby but they stay back and let the juveniles have their fun. Yep the adults have been there, done that for sure. The females appear to be more curious than the males. Tell you what he knows his Orcas!

You were very respectful of the orcas, giving them their space and not freaking out/frightening or hurting them when they chose to come closer. That is the right balance-keep a respectful distance and knowing when they are coming too close and you need to back away.

That was amazing video. I had a similar experience in Vancouver BC and at first it was like a beautiful religious experience and then it turned to fear as the entire pod surrounded our boat and started smashing their tails on the surface of the water. We got the heck out of there! You did a great job! I have seen several videos now of Orcas capsizing boats.

Not once in the years of study did any of the indigenous peoples ever claim one of their own went missing or killed due to an orca encounter. As a matter of fact, not only do they get up close and personal with the orca they know exactly what each pod eats, where, and differentiate one pods sounds from another. Thank you for your thoughts. It amazes me that even the juveniles are discipline enough to not get overly curious with kayakers and cause issues, even accidentally(that I'm aware of anyway). If only human juveniles listened to their moms as well.

Kids, almost all adolescent mammals have too much curiosity and trust. What boat is that, a kayak? Seems to move pretty fast, how? 😮😮😮😮
It's a pedal kayak, underneath there is a fin system that pushes you forward as you pedal with your legs, kind of like a step machine at the gym but your legs and upper body seats in a 90 degrees angle, very comfortable and efficient way to move on water. Speed wise, same as any other wide hull fishing kayak with paddle.

Several Sailboats have been rammed by Orcas one on a California to Hawaii passage. The family abandoned ship and the Orca swam around them for a couple hours while in their life raft.

I love this guy he didnt go stupid and say lets get out and check out these whales boys, he used common sense and backed the fuck up and let his heart pumping tell him how to react.
I also think the sound of his voice actually helped him not to get flipped, i dont wanna sound crazy but i think the whale could tell by the sounds/vibrations

If he’s only known there has never been an attack on humans by Orcas in recorded history. (Don’t bother pointing to the recent boat rudder-specific interactions by a small pod near Europe. They are most likely juveniles playing rough because they’d been taught by “teenage Orcas” to do so. If they wanted the people on the boats, they are MORE than capable of getting them. See: Antarctic orcas hunting)

If this is insane, my encounter would be really nuts. I'm in 16ft zodiac, sunning myself after dive. Orca comes within inches to me, I scratch his back. He stops, turns an looks at me. I get into water an get hit in back by his mate. She signals for 3 more, having sonar go right through me. Now I'm circled by 5, fin too fin. Changed my life!

Zolindigo, If you ever encounter this again, don't be scared of them even though as humans, we have fear so it's hard not too. If they come close like in the video, it means they are coming to you and you could whistle... Make sure it's high pitch. Just don't ever do it if they don't initiate contact first but, you'll see that they are no harm to humans as they usually reply back to you in a high pitch signal. If you do interact with them, just don't touch them as it's believed to disturb their independence apparently. They are curious as to why you are in the water and will come close to make sure you are okay - plenty of videos where Orcas have swum right close to swimmers to try to guide them back to the shoreline thinking they were too far out😂 The only Orca's known to attack humans are those held in captivity. Wild Orca's will not attack us as we are very similar in intelligence and have very similar birthing and brains. Also, riding away is not a good move. She thinks you're playing. Always stay stationary no matter how big they are.

Someone interviewed this swimmer afterwards she's a 60yo woman and they came right up to her. She had absolutely no fear of them. This was Mommy with her obvious female offspring. This was off the coast of NZ in December, 2019. She stated that they looked at her eyeball to eyeball a foot away. Also Dr Ingrid Visser also of NZ has had many encounters with them through the years. They've even brought her food as an offering. Its incredible how smart they are.
