It's not just the GOP. Both major parties and the major media have been moving to the right since 1950-ish. The general pattern (as Chomsky describes it) is 1) government and politics serves the interests of major corporations, and 2) major media is corporate and serves the interests of the government and other major corporations. The result is trickle-up economics and wars fought to benefit corporations. Carry it on long enough, and you get a big fraction of people who are left behind, mad as hell, and will blame anybody.

@MetaTron: I'm not (just) flaming. If you can read respected economists, two of whom are Thomas Piketty and Michael Hudson, it doesn't matter who you are - every year some of your net worth is transferred away from you, in a thousand ways, to someone who has more. In the U.S. it's been happening more quickly since Eisenhower. My word for this is "trickle up economics". Back then, a family didn't have to have two incomes, a person could work his/her way through college, etc. etc. There were plenty of things wrong then, but there wasn't the sense of hopelessness, of being left behind.

To expand upon what Geno Mccgeno said. One can make the argument that it's not even the top 1%, that have benefited the most, more like the top 0.1% to top 0.01%.
Most people don't know the magnitude of concentration of wealth that has been taking place in this country. For example, the top *0.01%* make over 50% of their income just from capital gains, of which they only have to pay a *maximum* marginal tax rate of 20% on the net-gains, and sometimes just 15% of it was a short-term investment. And if they have any net-losses, those are tax deductible.
So, in other words, the top 0.01% of the population, those who make over $12.1 million annually, pays a roughly equivalent to lower marginal tax rate than to someone earning over $34,000 in Maryland, which has a total marginal tax rate of 29.75% (25% Federal + 4.75% State). Even the the top 0.02-0.1% pay a much higher effective tax rate than the top 0.01%. (Of course, this on average. Some in the top 0.01% pay a much higher tax rate because their income doesn't come from capital gains. But many pay at absolute *most* 20% or less since a lot make almost all of their income from capital gains, let alone some defer taxes all together through tax avoidance mechanisms).
It really puts in perspective how much wealth has become super-concentrated at the very *very* top and how much the game has been rigged, so to speak. Something is terribly wrong with our tax code if a single person that makes over $12,000,000 per year in income can pay a substantially lower effective tax rate (up to *half* the tax rate, depending on the comparison) than anyone earning an annual salary or wages over $30,000-60,000 (the wide range is because it depends on a state-by-state basis as some states have income taxes, some don't, some states have capital gains taxes, and some don't).
So, this post became a lot longer than I expected. I barely touched the surface, but as you can see, even me trying to simplify things since taxes = complicated and there are a lot of nuances to our tax code.

In this short clip, why did Foner fail to mention the absolutely pivotal role of Newt Gingrich in turning Republican political discourse into a poisonous swamp of sophistry, lies, exaggeration, scapegoating, opponent-smearing, dogmatism, fear-mongering and obstructionism? He knows it's true, and his egregious failure to mention Newt's crucial contribution to moral, logical and linguistic political obscenity makes me question his credentials.

Eric Foner is one smart, well-informed dude, and he knows more about the history of political corruption and cronyism in the U.S. than you ever will. I suggest you look at the full breadth of his work before you join the anti-intellectual Trumpite herd and slam him without even being familiar with his work. The fact that you flatly dismiss people as "liberals" or "liberal professors" shows how closed minded you are. Like all job descriptions, some liberal professors aren't too bright - some are outstanding and extremely intelligent - and that is not to be derided. Foner falls into the latter description. The founding fathers were liberal thinkers also, of course.
Mass generalisations are not insightful or intelligent. Read Foner's writings. He is not one-dimensional, he calls it like he sees it and is critical of both parties, and of the system. You'll learn a lot.
Everyone has their biases but condemning someone for their (supposed) political views is incredibly shortsighted. In all sciences and humanities it ought to be an enrichment to talk with and learn from opponents. An echo chamber helps nobody but the people who are in power.
