This craft dates back to the early 19th century, when the kokeshi was crafted as a souvenir of the spa. Kokeshi is a wooden doll with a spherical head attached to a cylindrical body having no limbs.

So adorable! I like that smoke coming out when they insert the head into the body. It' like inserting the soul into a doll.
Thank you!

🙏
I didn't know they chirped!
Mine doesn't chirp.
I chirped so much when I was a kid that the head felt off.
There used to be a Japanese show all about these traditional crafts, it was narrated and I think might had had subtitles. There was a sort of “host”, and he did little skits and stuff about the products. And in the end they always had like a modern twist to it to try and help the business modernize and then they had a website where you could check the products out. It was definitely professionally filmed. Unfortunately their channel is gone and all traces of all videos removed and I haven’t been able to find information about it online anywhere. This channel is the closest to that one. Do any of you know what that show was called?
Holy cow, did you see that saw blade rise up? Not at all dangerous. Nope.
I wish they'd put a link on where to buy them, I see they have many for sale....
I'm sorry. I do not sell overseas. In Japan, you can buy it in Tokyo or Miyagi prefecture.
@@aoyamasquare I love your art and appreciate all the time and work that goes into each and every piece.....
Believe me: they sell a lot. Specially during festivities.
There are a ton of vintage ones for sale on sites like eBay and ETSY. I’ve seen some really cool ones. And a lot of the sellers are in Japan.

what is the purpose for this doll, is the any particular occasion or ceremony?
It is originally made as a doll for a souvenir of the hot spring so it has no particular occasion or ceremonies, but loved as a decorative figurine.
