The idea of falling away from creativity in the summer is a very familiar concept to me. As an avid gardener I used to think, oh well, I’m just channeling my creativity into the gardens now instead. And yes, that’s true ... but it’s deeper than that. It’s about the need to refill my creative tank. Now, as an older person (and make no mistake, there is quite a lot of value in that) I recognize the need for rest, for rebuilding the creative stores, for allowing new things to come into my life and into me so that I can once again make satisfying art. Thank you Nicholas, for reaffirming that. I love your podcasts. Good luck with your show.

When the student is ready the teacher appears! and in this case, the podcast appears with exactly the message that this student needed to hear!!! Thanks again and again Nic!
    My dot points:
    * I don't have to figure it out. My only job is to be present.
*Not knowing and doing 'something' even if I don't feel like it, brings a deeper conversation with myself and helps me to tap into my soul, my intuition.
    * work made from this space will reflect the real 'me'.
*Just 'feel' what it is Im wanting the work to say and go!
*Your Brain on Art - Ivy Ross and Susan Mason

Hi, I’m Swedish and have been listening to several of your videos. Thanks for sharing so openly - it’s like you’re getting into a flow - so interesting to listen at.
I’m 67 years. Was painting in my youth and last fall I began an entry level art school that continues shortly.
The content you’re sharing about go past the resistance is helpful.
You never speak about our right side of our brain but as soon as we begin painting (making art) it’s active. Our capacity’s a miracle..
I’m hoping you’ll be able to continue teaching… in 2026 I wish to do the Art2Life course 🥰🕺🌸🎶💓✌️🌿 Best wishes from me: Annika

Hiya, i just wanted to say thank u for these podcasts. As a new artist, starting later in life, its really good to listen to experienced artists talk about the artists journey, the issues and philosophical take on the aartists road.....its really cool to hear from both u and others as it can be quite overwhelming f'finding' art and how it takes over ones whole life, its really good to know theres a community out there! And answers to questions i have, and things i want to learn - its great to have this platform isnt it?!! Thank u again, from London

Tearss ❤ @19:55 " coming from a place of not knowing ushers in your soul." !!!❤❤❤ My soul has been wanting to come thru & create my life & l have been blocking it because i didn't have an exact map. :( :( I wish I knew this before. Goshh all the time wasted, no more. I'm going to live not knowing where im going to next. Amen.

Great conversation - and I'd love another podcast on not knowing regarding the feeling of the art work which you touched on. I've used not knowing when I've wanted a certain effect I'd never done before and trust it would come through my brush. But never for the feeling I want to convey. I've relied on my understanding of colors for that.

Thanks so much. I’ve been managing to get into my art journal once or twice a week but that’s about it. I’ve been feeling like a lost drifter. We planted lots of wildflowers this year so they are providing some inspiration but my engine is definitely on idle. Your encouragement is so needed.

This couldn’t have come at a better time. My momentum was derailed when I was without power due to a hurricane a few weeks ago and I haven’t been able to get myself motivated to paint since. Thank you! 🙏

This morning I wrote in my journal that I feel like I’m treading water, waiting for the next “whatever.” Just finished a 36x36 painting and took it to a local gallery where I show some of my work, and now I feel like I’m in limbo. Something you said rang especially true: Spaciousness is created at times like this, when I don’t have a clue where I’m going next. And the idea of taking a break - a brief diversion - also felt true. Just then there was a “commercial” from Anne Lamott whose writing I’ve enjoyed for years, especially while living in Berkeley for 20 years.. She’s putting on a writing retreat - either virtual or in person - and I may do just that. I was a published writer long before I started painting and aI all but completely abandoned it when I started down the Art2Life path.. I think I’m going to play little with writing and see where it takes me in my art. Perfect timing, wouldn’t you agree?
Thank you, as always, Nick. All the best, Kathe, St. Augustine, Florida

This is so good after a short break dealing with the death of my mother and all the family functions. Very much of a feeling of not knowing the future in my work and life with this change. Something deep is shifting and of course, your teaching reminds us to honor the mystery (not knowing). I'm realizing as I age that stepping forward from my center takes me to a truer place than "chasing" a dream. It is like following bread crumbs or I think of it as fog and I can see through, only certain distances as I move forward.

For me...Painting Is being elsewhere. So is gardening and the opposing colour wheel.
I see colours and forms but I don't make paintings from them.
The art comes from a place in the soul...letting go and never anticipating the final result...but being surprised and joyful.
Time disappears and truth is in the present.
In kindergarten I had to be dragged away from my paint brushes, colours and cheap brown paper.
    It was my escape.
I would have been 3 or 4 years old.
Now I'm 55 and I feel out of body for a while when I play with colour.
