DI vs Line Isolator for Amp Modelers | Walrus Audio Canvas

- Using a line isolator instead of a normal DI can really help your signal if you are running direct with an amp modeler or simulator like the Tonex, Strymon Iridium, Walrus ACS1, or Universal Audio Ruby and Dream. Check out the full video about line isolators on the Sunday Tone channel.

It just got louder
Sounds COmpressED
There's more high end information in the LI mode. I'm listening through monitor speakers, so it's probably more apparent that your cell phone.
The DI mode has an additional -20 dB pad that's turned off when in LI mode. I would love to hear an A/B of the two with the LI mode reduced in post by 20 dB for a fair comparison of the actual tonal differences. Anyone who thinks they can hear a tonal difference with that big of a dB discrepancy between modes is just fooling themselves.
I like DI mode sounds normal. LI mode like use compressor.
Also not sure why one of these would be necessary for most modelers today as most give you a balanced DI output right on the unit
Can you do a volume matched comparison?
Yea I think that would be a good comparison. I'm planning on doing another video where I show that and compare some other boxes that have similar features.
We perceive louder audio as better, I feel that is what is happening here......not that either option is better .....just one option is louder.
Volume matching is pretty essential. Even a dB more volume will sound ”fuller” and ”better” and ”more 3D”. Even if the only difference is the volume. I’m not saying the Canvas or the Diso etc don’t have any tonal coloration but I’m betting it is pretty minimal and the added volume (compared to DI) is the big thing. The better signal to noice ratio is beneficial when playing live for sure, though the desk preamps usually like to be opened up a bit at FoH. Our FoH guys also tend to be a bit freaked out with that much level (pros not so much), compared to the signal level from DI Bass, Keys and Acoustic.
li vs di. di will be -10 to 20 db quieter
@@sundaytone Does it just raise the line level, or does it color the tone??
Still waiting for a volume matched test, any plans for one?
Cold tone..
LOUD is good
magical
But….. it’s just hitting the compressor harder
So, Louder and Compressed
I don't really think it actually makes a difference. DI is a lower level then line level, so in LI mode it's just a bit louder, which brings out the low volume frequencies a little more and maybe adds a tiny bit of gain. Nothing you can't adapt to.
Exactly. Using a LI will sound identical to using a DI and just pushing the pres slightly more on the FOH console. Sure, raising the pres will raise the noise floor very slightly, but the difference is negligible. You're much better off getting a quality DI like a JDI or RNDI than one of these canvas or DISO LI's.
This isn’t just a volume difference. There are obviously clearer frequencies.
What is a clear frequency supposed to be?
Higher volumes have more highs in them.
Jehovah? Nice sounds great!
I feel like the LI sound better to my ears (using headphones) but is it just cause it’s louder? Is this a buzz sort of thing? Like would the LI potentially fix my buzz or make it louder?
I'm not sure where in the signal chain this is or what the intended effect even is cuz all that's really noticable here is a volume change, i would suggest sharing that info
So like, nearly no difference? The little there is would be very easy to adjust eq.
seems like a headroom thing
Is isolator when you pushed in or when is pushed out?
There’s more lower mid frequencies in the isolated side, I think. Is that right? I can hear the that the guitar sounds more “alive” in the isolation mode.
Yea it definitely feels more alive in the LI mode.
Sound a lot more compressed and it has a bit more bite
How would this work on bass tho?
I'm hearing a lot more pluck and not as smooth and dreamy of an experience with the line iso.
Well yes, louder always sounds "better". But what does it *_do_* and what do you need it for?
Makes your signal louder and converts your signal to XLR 👍
@@sundaytone Every DI box does that. What is different about the "Line Isolator"?
Yea so a typical DI will reduce your signal by something like -25dB. A line isolator will keep it at the same level. It is designed with a low impedance input for things like a Tonex, ACS1, or Iridium. A DI has a high impedance input. With a line isolator you won’t have to add as much preamp gain at the FOH console. Also, with that typical -25dB reduction there can be some slight loss of high end.
Just a gimmick product i think.
I never have an issue using tonex and other amp IR pedal using normal radial DI
You definitely don't need one - I was skeptical of them for a long time. Used normal DIs for a long time. I got a good deal on this one and decided to try it. I don't think it's a gimmick. Just a box that is specifically tailored for guitar amp sims.
@@sundaytone cool man
It just sounds like you kicked on a compressor with the line isolator. A slight increase in volume is the only clear difference.
sounds like compressor
DI mode sound harsh
You would have to be running this over a long distance with a balanced cable for either DI or LI to be needed. Running from a modeler to an interface in the same studio doesn’t require either.
Are both balance signal ??
Yes
Can I really hear the difference? Do a blind test with matched volume.
Gimmick
DI sounds more natural
I mean...yeah..it's louder
hear a bit of body to it
I don't get what your problem is.
I play bass and I love the sound of my tube amps. But they are heavy, big, expensive in purchase and upkeep, sometimes unrelieable. They are oldschool in the best and at the same time in the worst way.
If I can get a small cheap box that sounds like my amp and can even simulate a cab, why wouldn't I?
Don't worry, bassists have been going ampless forever. Bassamps are still around.
What is this witchcraft? I only play out of real cabs so I can’t use this, but it’s cool to know
You can use real cabs too. That’s what the stereo thru outputs are good for. It also gives you the option to sum the L&R outputs to send to a mono input on your amp/stage monitor while still sending isolated stereo signal to FOH
Can’t tell any difference
