It's amazing how much this improves the sound quality of a piano--it doesn't just reduce the volume but actually improves the sound without a tuning. I got a piece of polyester felt from a fabric store and cut pieces to hang between the hammers and strings. Try this if you have an old piano that sounds bad. You might be surprised..
I'm not super familiar with a grand piano sorry! I guess you'd just need to check out where the hammers are and where the strings are and try to put a tea towel in between?
